The SEND IT Mix

This is the first in a series of mixes I am making for the 'significant others' in my life. The mix is a reminiscent selection of tunes that were pivotal to our (John and I's) time shared in music. John and I have been friends since age 5 and we found electronic music together at the age of 11 through an underground radio station in Cincinnati OH (97x). We started DJing together in 1999 at college (Wittenberg) and began accruing a shared record collection. We opened up the record store together in 2001 and had a storefront in Indianapolis until 2007. This mix features a special list of tunes that bring me back to those early years of mixing with John (Seth & Mack was our moniker). We would spend countless hours listening to records together and curating those 'fine' gems that would make the cut and be a part of our mixable tracks. It was a tough cut, haha! I hope you enjoy this mix of nostalgia from the roots of my mixing days with John (circa 99-03). The featured photos is of John and I in roughly 2002 with our wallpaper of rave flyers behind us - the inspiration of these times, and these tunes.

Catch the magic of LA rave icons @Thee-O and @Ben-Annand in an unplanned b2b set at the Tropikroma Campout in Santa Clarita in August 2023!

This outdoor event survived a location shift the week of the party and crazy weather brought in by hurricane Hilary that canceled every other event, leaving Tropkroma as the last event standing.

The night was an homage to perseverance among the three organizers collaborating on the event - Tropical, Terrakroma, and The Gathering, ChinoSound who provided crystal clear Danley sound, and the 100 or so die-hard dancers that braved the first ever hurricane to hit LA - in August no less - and dance at this magical event in the trees.

Because we knew that rains would come in heavily in the late morning we made some shifts in the schedule.  Most notable was to move Thee-O's morning set into a combined nighttime back to back set with Ben Annand.

Thee-O is one of the most prolific LA DJs of all time, possibly playing the most total sets of any LA underground DJ from the 90s til now.  Ben also has an impressive DJ resume in addition to being the founder and vision behind Tropical, one of LA's most consistent, well-known and well-loved little underground events :)

There is no shortage of history between these two iconic LA underground warriors... At Ben's very first LA DJ gig for an outside promoter in 1996, he opened for Thee-O at Hollywood's infamous Gotham Club.  Ben DJed as Mr. Annand back then and is listed as such on the title for sake of nostalgia :)

The two have played together frequently since, and Thee-O has been a featured guest at Tropical parties in California, Oregon, and Hawaii.

Note how this set flows almost perfectly through a variety of styles between the 2 DJs switching every 4 tracks.  Hopefully this unexpected collaboration between Thee-O and Ben Annand will not be the last!

This edition of our mix series features luminary Seattle local and longtime friend of the crew Shaun Whitcher (https://soundcloud.com/shaunwhitcher). We've wanted a mix from this skilled master of the late night vibes for some time and he delivers with this well crafted psychedelic mix that is a perfect fit for the wee hours after raving. Shaun has been a longtime fan of Wicked (like us at Innerflight) and we are happy to have him play along with a legend and ace of the craft, Jenö. Joining them on the decks will be Lucky Cheese and Kadeejah Streets. The shindig goes down at one of our favorite Seattle underground venues on Friday Jan 26th.

Innerflight Broadcast 171: Shaun Whitcher

Something a little different for ya.  Me at my moodiest.  In more recent years I apply tags to my tracks of different vibes so that I can organize my massive music collection better.  One of the biggest categories is 'Moody.'  

Of course a lot of people going out on Friday and Saturday night to my gigs are out to celebrate, so this category doesn't get as much play live as more funky upbeat rhythms.  As such it's somewhat underrepresented on my Soundcloud.

Well not anymore :). I'm dedicated to releasing more sets this year and I see this one as the start of a series.  Welcome to Ben Annand Moody AF :). 

The opener of this series is an opening set I played on a Sunday night from 9-11pm. It's actually just the first hour, 9-10.  It's ok to be moody when people are settling in :). It was also November just after the time change and loss of light... the beginning of the moody season in Eugene :)

An opening set is always interesting musically (or should be) because you get to start from scratch, and set the tone for the whole night.  So it's always a set that should be played with intention.

In this particular case, I was in a sensitive space because I had taken some really nasty criticism from the organizer of an event recently before.  I won't go into detail but it was very tactlessly and cruelly delivered.  So of course that affected my headspace both in terms of insecurity, and in terms of wanting to deliver a great set since I didn't entirely disagree with the criticism so much as I was hurt by the tone from a supposed friend.

So why am I telling you this?  Because this set is moody as fuck!  It opens with a lush vocal track that really spoke to me when my marriage suddenly went up into smoke. I find this track really intense so I haven't played it much but at home.   

The mix stays deep and moody, gradually building energy then wavering then building.  It's super trippy, a little dark/melancholy for me, but still house and totally danceable of course :)

So with all that said, I hope you enjoy this one and I will keep em coming!

The birthday set I put together for the Aquarius/Pisces Zodiac Birthday Party on Feb 2, 2024. I have to say, I absolutely love playing music for our community at our favorite little underground spot in Seattle. Live recording of my 3am-4:30am set from Brit's That 90's Black Light Rave party (tough transitions and all lol)!  This is an all vinyl 90s throw-back set of song I remember from when I first started raving in 1993. All records pulled for this set were produced in the early 90s (with the newest release date of 1995) for that authentic 90s rave feel! I start things out with early (1990-1992) UK Hardcore and then progressing into songs (from 1993-1995) that were super popular at raves back in the day! Hope you enjoy!

❤️‍🔥 Sunday nights in Seattle means one thing: Flammable. For 30 years, Flamm has been our friends&fam tradition of house music to close out the weekend. Weekly dance church, served hot.

This past winter solstice 2023, I played a fun set at Flamm that I decided to whip up into an otter-style 4-hour House buffet, including many tracks I didn't get to play that night. Bon appetit! ❤️‍🔥

Shaun Whitcher - introduced to the underground music scene in Seattle in 1993 - started DJing in 1995. Working at Platinum Records Seattle (2000-2003) deepened Shaun's knowledge of electronic artists and labels. He frequently DJ'd events at NAF Studios, Club FX, and various underground afterhours/clubs. Held a weekly residency on Seattle’s Groovetech Internet radio and livestream broadcast shows. In 2003, Shaun left Platinum Records to work for Rane Corporation as their Technical DJ Expert and in 2004 helped launch Serato’s Scratch Live DJ program. From 2004-2014, Shaun spearheaded Rane’s evolvement with Seattle’s legendary Decibel Music Festival. Shaun was one of the lead designers of Rane’s infamous MP2015 rotary DJ mixer released in 2015. Fast forward 8 years to now, 30 years since his first rave, and you’ll find Shaun doing what he loves, dancing to house and techno or behind the decks playing his favorite songs.
