Ecstasy is usually an all too fleeting experience offering the briefest glimpse at transcendence. But a heightened sense of consciousness and discovery manifests throughout Out of the Blue, the transporting second album by composer and guitar maestro Raoul Björkenheim and his extraordinary Finnish quartet Ecstasy.
Featuring the celebrated drummer Markku Ounaskari, the young and dauntingly prolific bassist Jori Huhtala and saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen, Ecstasy has forged more than a signature sound. Over the course of five years the musicians have honed a supremely interactive modus operandi marked by unstable textures, rapidly shifting meters, and emotionally charged melodic flights. Earthy, pristine and unmistakably Nordic, the music evokes the grandeur of Finnish landscapes and the hothouse intimacy of a tight-knit Helsinki scene where the musicians regularly convene to refine their volatile sound.

“I always felt there’s something special about having a band,” Björkenheim says. “An all-star session can be good too, but the thing I’m missing nowadays in jazz is really good bands playing together tightly, turning on a dime together, and especially improvising together.” True to Raoul's statement, this is a band effort, and like all great bands, the sum is greater than the parts. With 2 years additional experience together for this album, everything is upped from the last one: the compositions, the improvisations, the ensemble work and the solos!

This is the live, world premiere recording of 'When We Speak' for solo cello and electroacoustic track. The work was premiered at the This Will Be Our Reply concert, International Women's Day concert at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Melba Hall on 7/03/2016.

PROGRAM NOTES:
When We Speak for solo cello and electroacoustic track seeks to comment on broader issues surrounding gender inequality and these considerations on my compositional practice. Throughout the work the interweaving of many ‘voices’ is present in: my own musical language, the music and speech of respected Finnish composer, Kaija Saariaho, the expression of the live cellist and her own literal voice.  The, at times semi-improvised cello part, weaves its way through an atmospheric soundscape derived from a recent public interview with Saariaho. The accompanying recorded musical sounds are extracted from Saariaho’s own compositions, with special weight placed upon manipulated excerpts from Gemma Tomlinson’s own performance of Sept Papillons.

Uscito il 5 marzo 2013 per La Tempesta Dischi e distribuito da Universal "Il Testamento", è il primo disco solista di Andrea Appino, voce e penna degli Zen Circus. Quattordici canzoni prodotte insieme a Giulio Ragno Favero con tre temi ben precisi: la famiglia, il proprio ego, la schizofrenia. Un disco fortemente voluto da Appino che dice: "È la totale liberazione dei miei dolori più profondi, la vera e difficile storia della mia famiglia usata come veicolo per una terapia di gruppo, necessaria e a tratti violenta". A coadiuvare Appino in studio Giulio Ragno Favero al mixer ed al basso e Franz Valente alla batteria, ovvero la base ritmica de Il Teatro degli Orrori, oltre al contributo di vari ospiti fra cui Rodrigo d'Erasmo (Afterhours), Marina Rei, Tommaso Novi (I gatti mézzi) e molti altri. Una collaborazione che porta le canzoni in territori oscuri e densi, dove il cantautorato figlio degli anni '70 di Appino si mescola all'impatto frontale di un rock che dona lucidità e forza maggiore alle sue parole, in merito alle quali dice: "dentro a questo disco alcuni dei testi più belli che io abbia mai scritto, ne sono sicuro". Infatti Appino ha lavorato alle canzoni di questo disco per molti anni: "Alcune hanno preso forma addirittura otto anni fa, le ho tenute da parte per il momento giusto che oggi è arrivato. C'è sicuramente meno ironia di molti dei brani più conosciuti che ho scritto per gli Zen, ma di certo non viene meno quel cinico e ghignante disincanto che nasconde in realtà un amore davvero grande per tutto quello che mi circonda. Con questo lavoro non voglio fare la morale a nessuno -aborro la morale- semplicemente ho aperto una parte di me che ho sempre avuto paura di mostrare e credo vivamente che le paure vadano combattute e vinte, sempre e comunque".
