Allah has created Man in a very unique form. He has given man intelligence and blown into him a spirit which makes him human. When Allah instructed the angels to prostrate to Adam (A.S) they were not just prostrating to his physical body, but rather the spirit within him. We all possess this soul yet it is often given little attention.

We indulge in many physical pleasures in this life, often neglecting our soul and depriving it of nourishment. Our souls are important, just as our bodies, in being sustained and satiated. If the body is created from the Earth then its nourishment comes from the Earth. Our souls are heavenly and therefore its nourishment must also be celestial and heavenly.

We often pay a lot of attention to our bodies by joining the gym and eating healthily. We are always conscious of our physical state and how others view us, but there is also an importance when it comes to looking after one's mental state and spirit (Ruh). What does Islam say regarding the mental state of a person? How can a person live a healthy life both physically and mentally by following Allah and his Rasool ﷺ?

The diseases of the heart stem from a person's corruption of the mind. This can lead to hypocritical behaviour and negative emotions that can consume a person; such as envy, greed and malice. The leader of the hypocrites during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, Abdullah ibn Ubay ibn Salool, had a lot of what people aspire to. He had a pleasing physical appearance, charisma, wealth and was soon to be chosen as the leader of the people of Madina, yet due to his jealousy and hatred of the Prophet ﷺ he regularly betrayed and caused troubles to the Muslims. The reality of the Munafiqeen (hypocrites) was that they had corruption in the heart, despite looking physically fit and healthy. Therefore, we should also be fearful of the diseases which could spread in our own hearts.

The simplicity in his life and the way he would help family members is an example which, unfortunately, many of us have forgotten today. The recitation of the Qurʾān is emphasized for all, even for those who recite with difficulty. The effect of its recitation on both the reciter and those who listen is explained in this talk along with examples. Many of the Arabs, including those who were enemies of Islam, were affected by listening to the miraculous nature of the Qurʾān; to the extent that some went on to embrace Islam.

Throughout history many individuals have occupied themselves with the recitation of the Qurʾān and turn to it especially during times of need. Allah has placed blessing in time for one who recites it and the angels surround those who recite the Qurʾān.

The Qurʾān is not restricted to the wealthy, but the poor companions during the time of the Prophet ﷺ would often listen and practice the Qurʾān. This talk does much to help an individual recognise the miraculous nature of the Qurʾān and encourage them to start reading, even it may be a little.

The Virtues of the Noble Qurʾān

The Miracle of Qurʾānic Memorisation

The Qurʾān has been preserved by Allah and He has placed it in people's hearts in a miraculous manner. This talk shows how difficult various other things are to memorize and retain in comparison to the Qurʾān. It also shows how children are able to playfully memorize the Qurʾān, even academically challenged ones, and how they carry it with them for the rest of their lives.

Thereafter this talk goes into depth of the biographies of three individuals whose cases show that Allah gives and withholds the Qurʾān from whom he wishes; two people who, despite mental disability, learnt the Qurʾān against all odds and recite it from memory continuously, and one genius scholar who had memorised many other books but was unable to memorise the Qurʾān.

Finally the concept of Allah giving and withholding from whom he wants is mentioned in the context of the Prophet ﷺ, who was the most eloquent of people [and a personification of the Qurʾān] but the only one of his people who was not a poet. The talk ends with a dua of encouragement that we should all try to memorize the Qurʾān.
