SHEA Radio #079: The Hacker

Michel Amato's contribution to electronic music can barely be overstated. As TheHacker, and under different aliases, he has inspired generations of dance music fans and artists. Since his first release in 1996, Amato had a Techno phase, dipped into EBM, sci-fi tinged Electro and New Wave, but is perhaps most famous as a founding father of Electroclash. He met a kindred spirit in Miss Kittin and together they became of one the most iconic duos in electronic music, with hits such as 'Champagne' (1998) and 'Frank Sinatra' (2000) selling hundreds of thousands of records.

In 2004, Amato released his most well-recieved album to date, 'Rêves Mécaniques', and the years since witnessed Amato put out a wide array of club mutations on many leading labels, including a double LP for his own label Zone.

Today, he is as in-demand as ever, with a highly-acclaimed album, 'Le ThéâtreDes Opérations' landing on Dark Entries in 2017 and contributions to tastemakers like Helena Hauff, Erol Alkan and Veronica Vasicka's labels since. In the live and DJ environment, Amato is as revered as he is on record, playing high-profile events such as Dekmantel, Berghain, Nuits Sonores and Off Sonar.

From the Morevi Records night at Horoom on June 13th comes this next instalment in the series. In a little over a decade, Separat has proved his mettle behind decks in his hometown Aachen, current base Cologne and other places like Gewölbe, Tresor or Openground. His sound has been instrumental in the local scene, a true underground talent and one of the heads behind Brandwerk. His press presence is fairly light, and a keen focus on his sound the most critical part of his work: groovy, immersive and playful. Fun through and through, with tones and charging rhythms which are designed for dancing the night away. Just a few years ago, Daniel Avery emerged from a famous Scrutton Street studio where the likes of Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J FairPlay were regulars. Since then, he has gone his own way, releasing a machine made, proudly analogue brand of indie-electro-techno-dance music that has come mostly on Errol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label. Mixing dark beats with dense and smoky synth atmospheres as both a DJ and producer, he knows how to cook up a metallic and menacing groove with aplomb. After impressing with his debut album, Drone Logic, in 2013, we're proud to invite him to this year's Lente Kabinet, Dekmantel Festival (together with Roman Flügel), and our mix series. 

The fabric resident kicks off his mix with some heady drones and deep, spacious grooves that are eerie and unsettling. The next 90 odd minutes sees him blend sublime acid, slithering synths and increasingly minimal techno into a seductive set that is expertly paced and seamlessly mixed. Perfect for the dead of night in some intimate back room, it shows a heady and atmospheric side to Avery that is truly compelling.
