The monthly "Clen's List" playlists come from the great music that I stumble across on Soundcloud each month and want to share with others. Of course this wouldn't be possible without the work of all the producers, reposters, promoters, and suggestions from others, so thanks and big up to everyone out there sharing and producing these sounds.

Another goal of these lists is to promote the artists producing the tunes. There are some really incredible less known productions that float around and just don't wind up in the "spotlight". By including these productions in the lists, hopefully these great works get their time in the spotlight.

P.S. Overtime the lists lose tracks that were originally included. I do not know if this is due to artists removing their tracks from Soundcloud (or the tracks get bought by a record company and then removed), or if there is another reason. When artists with the pedigree of Drumsound & Bassline Smith drop an album, it’s big news. With roots stretching back to the absolute foundations of rave music, this production team has legendary status. While keeping their underground credentials intact, they’ve been able to achieve mainstream chart success, perform on some of the biggest stages this music has to offer, and bring through many other monumental artists in their role as bosses of Technique Recordings. So this brand new collection of material is, no doubt about it, going to create waves.

With the first assured, slick bass tones and the eponymous vocal in the intro of Come With Me, we’re delivered straight into the big room sound that has set parties alight across the world. As the tune builds and drops, though, it becomes something diferent. There’s a dirty, grinding mid-range bass to get that screwface going. There are sonic references to other Drumsound & Bassline Smith tunes for the real fans to spot. As soul, filth, and production flourishes combine, we’re being shown the blueprint for the rest of the album.

You see, there are hints at a junglist past in tunes like Warrier and Ouija, but combined with the huge sound that the DBS studio is capable of creating. That collision of old and new comes to a head most clearly in the Brinsley Forde-laced Beautiful Danger, as gorgeous reggae vocals blend into a tear-out bassline-led rave-wrecker.

And then there are the nods to Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s history in the recon gured versions of Odyssey and Outlaw Renegade. These tunes, originally released a decade apart, both share the distinction of crossing sub-genre boundaries, and are as likely to be heard in a jump-up party as on a festival main stage. The inclusion of them here provides a marker of just how representative of the whole DnB scene these producers really are.

Of course, this overview barely scratches the surface. There’s the cinematic majesty of the collaboration with Prolix, Welcome to the Machine. There’s the gangsta funk of Roadblock, and the skank-out call-and-response of Technique Badboy. There’s the skippy syncopation of Control. There are subtleties and gems to be discovered throughout the whole album, as much a treat for the listener as for the raver.

So, this, their third LP, is like a gallery exhibit of the many facets of Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Their past, their present, and maybe their future, is laid out in intricate detail and with the sheen of sheer production class which marks them out from the crowd. Every tune on this album tells a chapter of their story while simultaneously being a straight-up banger. There aren’t many producers who could pull that off , but this is Drumsound & Bassline Smith were talking about here. So, of course they can.

Lazy Rich’s NSD debut gets re-released and re-worked into pretty much every tempo a DJ could possibly need by our hand picked selection of bass music’s finest.

Taking care of the dubstep side of things (and to wet your appetites for his forthcoming NSD E.P) we enlisted one of France’s rising stars, Habstrakt who has delivered an absolute corker of a remix! New Zealand’s finest, State of Mind bring the funk with a classy Drum n Bass stepper, and NSD Co-Owner and label manager Nick Demus introduces his new Mobscene project contributing to the rise of the Moombhaton phenomenon!

We’ve also Included Lazy’s outstanding original, and Callum B’s dubstep remix for those who may have missed the release the first time round last year.

Hailing from Bratislava in Slovakia, D&B producer L Plus has already  
forged an enviable career as a DJ and producer. Since signing  
exclusively to Technique Recordings in 2011, he’s been honing his  
unique sound, with releases like his “Time Travel” EP, “Catastrophe”,  
and remixes for scene luminaries like Crissy Criss and Tantrum Desire.
 
This style is evident in this release. The title track sets out L  
Plus’s blueprint straight away, with sweeping atmospherics cut with  
strong vocal hooks. The bass hits hard, but it’s the melody that  
drives the tune, evoking the early days of rave while maintaining  
precision-tooled production quality.
 
Next, “Taking Me Higher” moves even further into old skool euphoria.  
The beautiful vocal and filtered strings of the intro, swooping into a  
instant-classic riff, offer a perfect lighters-in-the-air moment.  
After an epic drop, L Plus twists things up with another of his  
trademarks, a half-speed breakdown allowing the harmonies he’s created  
to shine through.
 
As the name suggests, “Challenger” goes harder. L Plus is a master of  
atmosphere, and here he shows off this skill to build tension. His  
high-end patterns blend and contort until the drop, when he throws  
down a complex array of synth-work to send ravers crazy.
 
The last track, “Close To You”, takes us back in time again.  
Mid-nineties spacey sounds are held together with the eponymous vocal  
sample. Percussive stabs and building drums introduce the low-end  
which sparks the track into life, which L Plus balances with his  
customary melodic work.
 
This EP shows exactly what L Plus can do. He’s a true music producer,  
not a “beat-maker”, able to manipulate melodies and vocals as easily  
as he can twist up a bassline. Add this to his calling-card soaring  
atmospherics and it’s clear that these tracks are equally capable of  
blowing up dances and airwaves.

Sleepy Heartland, whilst remaining familiar, is, in many ways, unlike anything else you’ve ever heard. From a restrained yet ready beginning, beats are introduced early on, with various sounds occurring inside a synth-laden setting. The track kicks in, and the quality of production is immediately obvious. Warmth pervades in the bassline, and the overall feeling of the track is one of serenity and beauty.  The basic elements of the track are carefully and lovingly juxtaposed against repeating woodwind sounds, to lend a feeling of the late night, or equally the early morning. DJ support has quite rightly come from across the drum & bass board, and Sleepy Heartland has been popular at radio for some weeks now. Feed your imaginations whilst Dynamic and Sheer Velocity feed your souls.

Momentary Switch is a similarly soulful affair, this time centred around a vocal sample, which is wrapped in funky kicks and a roiling, rolling bassline which easily fills out the sound.  Sheer Velocity places itself in the revival of the break in drum & bass, and Momentary Switch employs the device to the fore, letting the track move forward of its own accord. Repeated listens will be rewarded by the discovery of a multitude of levels, from all parts of the mix, from the finely-tuned drums to electronic effects amid flourishes of acoustic mandolin. Taking just the right inspiration from legendary nights like Speed and Swerve, the track works as a perfect ambassador for SVr’s philosophy of bringing forward bright and inspirational music.
