Joya, born Jodie Chan, is a singer-songwriter whose favorite instrument is her voice. 

Born and bred in Hong Kong to a family of music aficionados, she acquired a taste for performing young at the age of 9 and continued through college, where she joined Northwestern University’s only East Asian a cappella group Treblemakers.

Her songs feature relaxing rhythms and luxurious melodies, potently weaving poignant yet supple vocals over a stripped-back tapestry of acoustic guitar and longing piano, with stirring refrains evocative of Broadway ballads and glorious praise songs. 



Her music might remind listeners of a female Ben Platt but is in a genre of her own - weaving timeless influences like Carole King, Disney, and Broadway ballads. 



Joya's ideal way of connecting with people is by sharing her music with them. Her lyrics are real stories about real people, with elements of herself braided in, serving up “a different kind of love song for a different kind of love,” as she writes in her fervent ballad Raindrops on Roses.

Jodie openly identifies as “Christian, queer, and a number of many other things, but most importantly - not one thing”. Her music is an extension of her own beliefs in the importance of inclusion, diversity, and the difficult conversations that move us in that direction.
