Our twice-a-year trips to upstate New York are something we truly cherish. There’s a special magic in that barn, I swear. This time, we had friends representing 11 nationalities, each bringing their unique backgrounds and stories. Yet there we were, gathered in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, sharing laughter, tears, good food, and incredible music.
Every trip has its own character, and this one was no different. I’m thrilled to share the recording of my Saturday night set, which followed Kim Kenis’s phenomenal 4-hour journey. It felt like a natural progression to start with some deep, dubby tracks and gradually build the tension. I’m really happy with how the mix turned out, and I hope it resonates with you, too. Finishing the set brought such a feeling of joy. One I know I’ll hold onto for a long time.

"I'm like a collector—everything I come across makes it into my music." The dance music don talks about the music that shaped him and his recent L.B. Dub Corp album on Dekmantel.

Luke Slater, the British DJ, producer and occasional drummer, has been making music under a slew of monikers since the '80s: Planetary Assault Systems, L.B. Dub Corp, LSD, The 7th Plain, Clementine—the list goes on. While he's put out an excellent range of dynamic analogue music that runs the gamut of house, acid, breakbeat, electro and even spoken word, he's probably best known for his productions and live shows that focus on sleek and solid techno, as showcased on Ostgut Ton and his own imprint, Mote-Evolver.

In the latest instalment of our flagship live series Playing Favourites, Slater unpacks the tracks that, for him, best illustrate the history of techno at large, as well as the records that define his creative process and career trajectory. He speaks with Chloe Lula live from Polifonic festival about his love of Detroit and Underground Resistance, as well as the abiding influence of hip-hop on his early work and his love of intentionally integrating mistakes in his music. He also reflects on how he became the first non-German artist to release on Berghain's esteemed record label, as well as discussing his most recent release, Saturn to Home, for Dekmantel. The double LP saw him return to his drumming practice and introduce surprising and powerful collaborations from electronic music contemporaries and vocalists like Kittin and the poet Benjamin Zephaniah. DSS 105 comes from the mind of enigmatic producer, DJ and liveact Aa Sudd.

Based in Germany, he primarily explores the psychotropic and hypnotic realms of sound. Delving into irregular rhythms, immersive atmospheres and kaleidoscopic patterns. With a focus on the captivating and the otherworldly, Aa Sudd delivers enveloping sets and productions, fusing elements of techno and experimental drum and bass to create a psychedelic listening experience, spreading his sound via labels such as Midgar or Mirror Zone.

Under his pen name Chlär, Charles Accarisi sets forth with a full rig manifestation of techno that jolts from one trunk-rattler to the next. From his native Switzerland to his adoptive home Berlin, the potency of his sound has followed him and grown ever larger, an assertive strain of dyed-in-the-wool techno that’s groovy and layered as a mountain rock. Working over and above his standard DJ duties, across A&R, events and sound engineering, Chlär practices full-involvement in much of the music pipeline, starting with his own sound and that of new finds and ending with the music’s final dialogue in public space. He’s been keeping busy, and as half of Funk Assault, co-runner of Bipolar Disorder Rec and founder of Primal Instinct his plate’s more than full, but his just-released first full album on the latter label shows little signs he’s tiring. The Architects of Shadows explores current political and sociological themes as broad as nationalism and social atomisation, rifts that through his many roles in music, he’s working hard to bridge. The promise of that newly connected world comes alive through the primacy of his beats, looping, packed with meaning but immediate nonetheless. Bassiani Podcast 248 is an hour and a half of dizzying basslines and all encompassing loops that bear witness to Chlär’s undeniable skill as techno selector. These are future-ready beats from a techno polymath.

Miha is multilayered artist from Ljubljana, Slovenia and in the past couple of
years he has developed into an amazing producer of techno music. He releases music under his alias Shekuza and it seems Miha has really found his groove because high quality music has been steadily coming out of his studio. He has released two very distinct albums De Sica and Coriolis effect on Kamizdat, an EP called Floorcuts on Slovenian techno output Technopolis and he is a regular appearance on the annual dub techno compilation Chilli Space. Perhaps an even more impressive achievement are his live sets with which he has opened the eyes of a wider public in Kino Šiška events, either providing an opening act for more renown guests or taking the center stage himself. We visited him in his studio to talk about his early days and how he got interested in electronic music. Currently Miha is one of the leading modular techno producers in the region. He creates his music with a modular synthesizer, now already a two-box setup and we discussed a lot about his approach, how he got started, what inspires him, what are the challenges of modular synthesis and the many advantages such an approach brings to the table. Together with like-minded producers they are paving the way for future generations of producers via their collective called Clockwork Voltage.
