Shelflife presents the new four track EP from Spain's When Nalda Became Punk entitled Indiepop or whatever! coming March 4th. 

Elena Sestelo started the group as a solo project in 2006. She self-released some lovely digital singles (one under the name Nalda) and also took part in Bubbletone Discos digital singles club. In 2011, the group expanded into a duo with Roberto Cibeira joining in. That summer they released their debut 7" for theme song "When Nalda Became Punk" on UK indie pop label Pebble Records. In 2012 the band played several shows, including Madrid Popfest and recorded their debut album, A Farewell to Youth. As the previous single, it was produced and recorded by Eva Guilala and Ivan Juniper from the Spanish band Linda Guilala at their Kaiju Studios (Vigo, Spain) and was mixed and produced by Ian Catt (producer of Saint Etienne, The Field Mice, Dylan Mondegreen, The Proctors, etc). The album was released on Shelflife at the beginning of 2013. Antonio Llarena then joined the band, completing the actual formation of WNBP, and they played several shows, including the Indietracks Festival. 

Now the band is ready to release Indiepop or Whatever! the new EP recorded and produced in Vigo (Spain) by Bruno Murmura. The title of the EP is an attempt to acknowledge all the musical influences in the band. Although it's obvious that indiepop is one of their main ones, they also take inspiration from 90's britpop, shoegaze, punk-pop, synthpop and even grunge. Elena explains "when sometimes people ask what kind of music we make, the answer is indiepop... or whatever you may call it." She later wrote a song with that name and it seemed to fit perfectly as the title of the EP. 

"Song for Carrie Mathison", the first single from the EP, is a pure-pop song filled with energetic jangly guitars and bittersweet synths and is dedicated to Homeland's Carrie Mathison, one of Elena's and Antonio's favorite TV shows. "Indiepop or Whatever" is a twee punk-pop song written about what it's like being in a band and performing live at popfests. At times it all suddenly turns into a dream, so far away from everyday life that you'd wish it could last forever. "Daylight Saving Time" is considered by the band as Nalda's grungiest song. The noisy 90's guitars go along with lyrics about being desperately sad for not finding your place in life. "A Secret Plan", which has the super catchy electronic bass and toy synths, is a song written about hope and getting past the worst of times. When Nalda Became Punk continue to lead the new chapter of brilliant Spanish bands and we're pleased to help bring their music to the world.

HELPER - January Summer

The first single off the new album Trespassing shows the band in full California sunshine mode. The band, working with producer Bryan Hanna, recorded the track outdoors in the redwoods at the band's Mystery Lawn Mountain studio in Northern California where echoes of Fleetwood Mac are still refracting through the trees. Allen Clapp sings and plays piano; Jill Pries plays bass; John Moremen plays lead guitar; Gabriel Coan drums.

Peel Dream Magazine is the nom de plume of New York City-based musician Joe Stevens. A nod to BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel, arbiter of all things underground, Peel Dream Magazine is highly evocative of a certain strain of independent music. Stevens harkens back to the early 1990s, when The Velvet Underground resurged as an inspiration to a new set of bands wielding synthesizers, off-set guitars, and a political bent. The Peel Dream experience is defined by a gentle, fuzzy psychedelia —it’s a hypnotic bit of mod-ish lo-fi pop, recalling the best of early Stereolab, Lilys, and other shaggy haired kids with vintage fuzz pedals, slim trousers, and good record collections.

Written and recorded over a four-week period in the fall of 2017, Peel Dream Magazine’s debut album "Modern Meta Physic" fixates on the New Age universe of the Catskills region of New York. Stevens deals in esoteric bohemian fare — Far East philosophy, Native American tradition, mid-century modern cool — as he appraises the world according to privileged urban expats who increasingly call the upstate paradise home.

Leading off the album, "Qi Velocity" is a metronomic take on French pop that yields to a lush chorus reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian. “Deetjen's," named after the much-loved bed & breakfast in Big Sur, would fit snugly on Unrest's best Teen Beat material. "Due to Advances in Modern Tourism" displays a soft take on Neu!, while the organ that enters could be a sly wink to Steve Reich's "Four Organs.”

There is an economy to these tracks — everything is distilled down to it’s essential elements, no gestures are wasted, no superfluous ornamentation taking up space. While Stevens is more than happy to show his influences on his sleeve — mind you, they're great influences — it's clear Peel Dream Magazine isn't just a “sound." The guy can write songs. Where he goes next is anybody's guess.

The song was borne out of experimenting with tunings, delays and frequencies to try and capture the sounds we hear when out in the county of Lincolnshire. In a world where we are increasingly made to feel divided Corasandel believes that kindness is the new rebellion. One you can dance to.

Unison Mix is the first digital single from Corasandel’s debut five track EP, All The Hours Are One released on 26 April 2019.

The song builds on the band’s fascination with reverb and delay; a desire to mix experimental ambient textures with a driving three minute charge that draws on their love of the Cocteau Twins, Slowdive and early Mercury Rev. 

Written and recorded during the turmoil and division in the UK and across the world last year, Unison Mix lyrically strives to find common ground between people, looking for positivity. Alone we are vulnerable, together the world does not have to end.
