Tone Poem for Chamber Orchestra

Cordiform (heart-shaped) is an homage to love. The piece begins with a quiet burst of ‘love chords,’ and finds a path of uncertainty, contemplation, recognition, deepening emotions, and boundless expansion. 
All of this is better told with music than with words.
Based on a true love story.

An early audio recording medium, wax cylinder recordings were the first commercially produced sound recordings. They create a snapshot of the daily life of those ‘early adopters’ in the decades around the turn of the 20th century, who recorded the small details of their day with what was, during its time, the newest technology. Anonymous sound recordings from wax cylinders comprise a primary part of AboundBox.

This was written in memory of my Norwegian American grandparents and their farm, situated in the rolling bluffs of Wisconsin. The first piece is about my grandma, starting in her garden and ending with the two of us mourning my father’s death.  The second portrays my grandpa and the quiet days we spent adoring each other in silence. See lyrics with music at:

Prolegomenon for Clarinet, Horn and Strings

For the past sixty years, composer and interdisciplinary artist Meredith Monk has been expanding the possibilities of the human voice. A pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, she has created collaborative performance pieces that stretch the limits of music, inspiring figures from Björk to Merce Cunningham. Her most recent work, "Indra’s Net," draws from her decades of Buddhist practice and explores themes of impermanence and interdependence against the backdrop of our ecological crisis.

In this episode of Life As It Is, Tricycle’s editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, and co-host Sharon Salzberg sit down with Monk to discuss the relationship between her art and her meditation practice, the importance of listening fearlessly, and why she believes art is a bodhisattva activity.
