Synth ambassadors Birdsnake create their own brand of psychedelic infused downtempo electronica, exploring the line between digital and organic. It’s been some time since we last featured a back-to-back set in our beloved mix series, and episode 167 comes to make up for it. Recorded live earlier this year at Venue MOT during a fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians, the night brought Will Hofbauer and Zaltsman together on the decks, weaving a seamless journey of deep grooves, vibrant rhythms, and euphoric energy. Drum grooves left behind on the disk drive of an old SP1200, a rusted spring reverb and crates of dusty records, all boxed up in a distant relative’s workshop. @commandd has uncovered the first tracks in a series of forgotten gems of a distant relative, a craftsman inspired by the raw style of 90s house and techno.

On a mission to keep dancefloors moving, this long-lost relative’s productions find new life, with a hope to travel from city to city, deejays responsible for carrying sounds forged in the fire of an undeniable groove. 

The Vibesmith is the work of an alchemist with the freedom to embrace imperfection and find solace in tradition.

With no concern for passing trends, the Vibesmith went about thankless work at the forge, the fruits of their labour finally available for all to taste.”

Command D presents ‘Fever’, the first in a series of releases under his no muss, no fuss imprint ‘The Vibesmith’. Taking inspiration from Junior Byles’ 50s era joint, also called ‘Fever’, the track is a reinvigoration of an inescapable vibe sure to capture the attention of any willing dance floor.

The smith forges on, with no doubt many more to come.

For Tapes #164, A for Alpha dives deep into a sound that has long lived in her record collection: dark, dubby, and hypnotically groovy tech house from the late 90s and early 00s.

Inspired by an inspiring summer at Love International, Houghton, and other spaces that celebrate deep listening and late-night movement, this mix is a love letter to the stripped-back, rolling energy of that era. Drawing on tracks from Nathan Coles, Terry Francis, Floorbangers, Tony Hewitt, SWAG, and seminal labels like Surreal, Wiggle, and Visitor, A for Alpha unearths a raw, tribal-tinged sound that still feels vital today.

It’s a personal journey, one that explores a side of her taste not always heard in the club, but deeply rooted in their identity as a DJ. Groovy, dark, and full of low-end weight.
