This is a mix I previously uploaded on NTS, made entirely from Balinese gamelan recordings. sourced by all the sounds from Balinese gamelan cassette tapes that I personally collected in Bali. I digitized the recordings and built the mix entirely from them.

I’m still getting great feedback on it, so I’m re-uploading it in high-quality WAV format.

The first part of the mix features recordings from Insitu Recordings, a label that introduces young gamelan musicians in Bali. These were recorded in the 2010s. Midway through, the mix transitions to a gamelan orchestra performance of unknown performers and an undated recording. The piece being played is Gong Kebyar, one of the most frequently performed gamelan compositions, which tells the story of Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and arts, similar to Benzaiten in Japan.

Following that is Guguritan, a style of gamelan-based storytelling primarily performed by two male singers. One sings the narrative in Balinese, while the other provides explanations as the story unfolds.

The mix closes with the soothing sounds of Rindik, a bamboo gamelan instrument known for its warm, relaxing tones.

By the way, since none of these recordings were made in a studio, most were captured outdoors. That means you might occasionally hear birds chirping or even dogs barking in the background—giving it a raw, field recording feel

Shhhhh is a Tokyo-based DJ and sound explorer, known for his unique ability to merge diverse musical styles into a seamless, genre-defying groove. With a deep appreciation for world music, he crafts dancefloor experiences that blend ethnic rhythms with cutting-edge electronic sounds.
Beyond DJing, Shhhhh is an active music writer, collaborator, and advocate for cultural exchange.
He was involved in the extended collective surrounding Japan’s legendary band Boredoms, supporting their tours and occasionally DJing for them—a formative experience that continues to inform his rhythmic and experimental approach.
Since fall 2018, he has been a resident DJ at The Observatory, a renowned club in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. His international presence continues to grow through his contributions to radio platforms such as Worldwide FM and NTS, as well as his performances at major festivals and
underground events worldwide.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he produced the Gamlan Mix ( https://ja.ra.co/news/76734 ), which was selected by Resident Advisor and featured as Mix of the Day.
As a lineup advisor for EACH STORY (www.eachstory.net), he curates sonic experiences that push boundaries and foster artistic collaboration.
