13 years after their first release and irruption in the South American electronic scene, Barrio Lindo presents a new EP that is announced as the first chapter of a story that will continue.
After exploring a completely acoustic sound in their last release “Espuma de Mar” (2022), Barrio Lindo returns to renew their sound and propose a predominantly electronic journey, allied to the organic and psychedelic, in the personal moment of greatest fascination and curiosity for science and nature's mysteries.

ecdysis vol. I is a renewal in the sound of Barrio Lindo and a return to being inspired by the dancefloor. This EP has been produced between 2024-2025, time in which these songs have matured within the live sets he performed in the last year. 

Arpeggios, shifting bass lines, processed Andean strings and precise percussions are part of ecdysis' sonic palette, which finds inspiration in music from all over the world, from Caribbean sounds, through Arabic scales and Dabke sounds, to hip-hop beats.

This EP is in a way a painting of two geographically opposite latitudes that are part of Barrio Lindo in their daily life, tours and studies. The precise and sensitive poetry of Nicolás Dominguez Bedini from Turdera in the south of Buenos Aires, and the deep sweetness in the voice of Hou, singer from Miyazaki in the south of Japan; weave this infinite romance that Agustín Rivaldo has with his country of origin and with Japan, a country he visits frequently.
The extremes and everything in between are part of the Barrio Lindo universe in a constant change of skin.


Barrio Lindo - ecdysis Vol. I

Shika Shika is very proud to present Mas Aya’s “Still, Flowing” - a 4-track EP that touches on themes such as family, intimacy and spiritual purposes, the title itself taken from a lecture by influential Buddhist monk Ajahn Chah.

Brandon Valdivia a.k.a. Mas Aya has emerged as one of the most prolific and respected musicians in Canada, working as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist over the past twenty years. He has worked with artists such as GRAMMY Award-nominated Lido Pimienta, Bomba Estereo, Not the Wind, Not the Flag, Laraaji, Sook-Yin Lee amongst others.

While influenced by many genres, the EP centres around ambient folklore with strong references to jazz and Caribbean music. Diverse percussion, polyrhythmic drums and ethereal flutes tie the music together, transmitting calm and rooted hope.

“Still, Flowing” begins with Capullo, a track that deals with themes of parenthood and family life, even containing a sample from Brandon’s daughter playing in the background during the COVID lockdown. Mas Aya - Still, Flowing

Shika Shika presents our new Botanas by MAUGLI, an artist we have had on our radars and playlists for a while due to his really unique production style and sound. Somewhere between hip-hop, very skilled cut and paste sampling and crisp production. With this Botanas he doesn't disappoint with two absolutely delicious cuts of his signature style.

In MAUGLI's own words:

Trouble Feat. Flolento
'First track 'Trouble' is a collaboration with Eigenklang member Flolento on the clarinet and was originally inspired by the notorious 'Six Boys in Trouble. In the early 1950s a group of kids from housing projects jammed on homemade percussion and sang along with it. With a ton of soul and the first signs of something resembling rap flows (in the 50s!!!) the recordings spark pure joy to me. At some point the sample flew out and ended up on another song and then I asked Flolento and his clarinet to jump in to contrast the pouring wet guitarlicks - chop choppidy, chop and the jam was ready to be served.

Kiliman
Kiliman was inspired by a PVC tube jam and sung poetry from Harak and various Brao groups of Southern Laos. What struck me first was the laid back vibe that came across the recordings. A perfect base to garn with raw drums and pure sine waves for some serious sweaty, booty shaking. There are super secret undercover hints to the original samples sprinkled in there as well to other quotes in this collaged piece of music.

Shika Shika presents A Guide to the Birdsong of Migration, the fourth volume in its acclaimed A Guide to the Birdsong series.

This unique project brings together the songs of birds with the talent of artists from across the Americas, exploring in this edition stories of migration, birds and musicians who share the same routes.
This release features nine migratory artists from eight countries, including: Mas Aya & Lido Pimienta (CA/CO), Valesuchi (CL), Biomigrant (US), Diana Gameros (MX), Lagartijeando (AR), Terror/Cactus (AR) and more.
It also features some incredible bird species whose journeys mirror those of the artists themselves: the Canada Warbler (Reinita Canadiense), which travels a huge distance from Colombia to Canada, echoing Lido Pimienta’s own path between those two lands; the Rufa Red Knot, or “Moonbird,” which has flown the equivalent distance to the moon, reflected in Valesuchi’s own family history of migration across continents; the Buff-breasted Sandpiper, covering over 30,000 km a year, just as Biomigrant has traced his own musical journey across the Americas; and the Sandhill Crane, whose endurance and grace resonate with Diana Gameros’ story of resilience as a migrant navigating life between Mexico and the U.S.

After our first release via ZZK records 2 years ago, History of Colour, a collaboration project between El Búho and Barrio Lindo, returns with our second release, "Calidoso". The 4 track EP explores new sonic landscapes for us both, inspired by slow-dance and flitting between andean folk, marimba, electronica and organic sounds.

The music was co-created by Robin (El Búho) and Agustín (Barrio Lindo) in January over emails and Dropboxes between Buenos Aires & Mexico DF and mastered by our good friend Nicola Cruz based in Quito, Ecuador.

The artwork is a fragment of a gorgeous mural called called "Historia del tiempo" from Buenos Aires by the Argentine artist Elías Santis.

"Exploraciones" is Shika Shika's new series of releases that unite together two artists from different corners of the world to collaborate on a track and then bring that track to a group of artists to edit or remix. 

For this first session we invited two artists we hugely respect: Chilean trio Matanza and Turkish producer Oceanvs Orientalis. We then invited Jhon Montoya (Colombia / Italy), Carrot Green (Brazil) and History of Colour (Argentina / UK / Mexico) making this a truly global expedition!!

The mysterious Leipzig based duo JAJA released one of favourite albums of 2016 (Tropical Bird Club) on ynfnd (you need friends not discs) and we have been waiting to release something from them on Shika Shika ever since! 

For this Botanas, JAJA serve us up two humid, organic tracks seeped in dark green vegetation and marked by screeching birds from the canopy and mysterious voices from the forest floor. One for the deep groove.

We celebrate two years of Shika Shika with the release of our third compilation: Eco. 

Eco sums up what Shika Shika is about - the global reverberations of styles, genres, traditions and sounds moving around the world and fusing to create inspiring new music. We call it music without borders and on Eco we present 11 tracks that are exactly that. 

The tracks we hand-picked for Eco draw inspiration from traditional rhythms, stories and melodies and fuse them with individual inspirations, sounds from nature and electronic music. This is exemplified on Di Laif’s anthemic opener “Paso Por el Fuego” or Guazú’s incredible “Pava de Monte” featuring Wenceslada. Some artists like Jin Jerei and Oxhalá take us on a journey deep into their roots while others like Didacte and O.R. create atmospheric textural, electronic-organic soundscapes. Ibu Selva’s “Chega de Esperar” is a rework of a Brazilian agrarian reform anthem while Klik & Frik offer up a beautiful edit of Hassan Ben Jaafar, a master of Moroccan Gnawa music. 

It is hard to believe it has been two years since Shika Shika was started as a platform to showcase some of the music we truly loved from the thriving community from Sao Paulo to Seoul. Two years of connections, exchanges, ideas, new sounds and, most of all, incredible support and feedback from the people who listen & buy this music all over the world. We started Shika Shika as a way to give exposure and support to this community, sharing 70% of all the profits with the artists directly, and are inspired to continue pushing the music we love.

Shika Shika Presents: Eco

Di Laif Feat. Mafé Tula - Paso Por El Fuego

'Campo Triste' está inspirado en el famoso tema ecuatoriano "La Bocina', en este caso (sample) interpretado por Soledad Morales, cantante invidente quien radicó en Sigsig, pequeño pueblo de la provincia del Azuay. No fue sorpresa encontrar que el productor ecuatoriano Pancho Piedra, habitante de Cuenca, Ecuador, se encontrara trabajando en una re interpretación de este tema. Tiene sentido, toda una generación dedicada a la radio, transmitiendo joyas resguardadas en las bóvedas de 'Radio Tomebamba'. 

Así continua la familia Piedra, en poder de antiguos discos que cuentan la historia de un Ecuador nostálgico, liderado en aquellas épocas por el timón y los arreglos de don Polibio Mayorga. Este es un homenaje contemporáneo sin duda, con el fin de rescatar ese anhelo sonoro de aquellos tiempos.

We are honoured to present a very special and very beautiful Botanas from the hand of Ecuadorian producers Nicola Cruz and Pancho Piedra. 

Campo Triste' is inspired by the famous Ecuadorian song "La Bocina", in this case with a sample from a version sung by Soledad Morales, a blind singer from Sigsig, a small town in the province of Azuay. It wasn't a surprise for Nicola to discover that Pancho Piedra, a fellow Ecuadorian producer living in Cuenca, was working on a reinterpretation of the song. Everything made sense - Piedra belonging to a generation that is dedicated to treasuring and transmitting musical gems from the vaults of the city's "Radio Tomebamba". 

In this way the story of the Piedra family continues, holding in their hands these old records that tell, with nostalgia, the history of Ecuador, led at the time by don Polibio Mayorga’s arrangements. 

While this is undoubtedly a modern tribute, it also captures and revives this nostalgic piece of musical longing from another time. 

This Botanas also features three precious remixes from fellow Ecuadorian Quixosis, Mexico's Jiony and Chile's Rodrigo Gallardo.

To celebrate the summer solstice we are incredibly excited to present Ñuka Shunku, the debut EP by Ecuadorian singer-songwriter Huaira.

Based in Quito, Huaira is one of the leading names in the emerging Ecuadorian scene of young musicians and producers seeking inspiration in the country’s folklore and reimagining what it could sound like in the 21st century. Huaira’s name first received global recognition for her collaboration with Nicola Cruz on his track Colibria, from his debut album Prender el alma but on this EP her own talent as a songwriter shines with four beautiful tracks inspired by the incredible nature around her and Ecuador’s rich ancestral roots.

On Ñuka Shunku, which means “I am pure heart” in quechua, Huaira shares a sound that seems to embody Ecuador’s incredible landscapes -  the lush rainforest, the soaring mountains and the stunning beauty of her country. She presents a new, deeper, more spiritual aspect to the organic-electronic scene, as if drawing her own voice and lyrics from the earth or madre tierra itself. In her own words:

“It is sharing a message that comes from the earth itself, from the ancestors. Tangible ideas that materialise in music to inspire, celebrate and share the roots of our untameable America, a continent that never stops to remind us of something we often forget: we live in a paradise.”

On this EP Huaira worked with three of the biggest talents from Ecuador’s new wave of folk musicians, brothers Pablo and Julio Vicencio (sons of legendary Ecuadorian folk musician Mauricio Vicencio), and guitarist Diego Illescas. An example of the collaborative nature of the global scene, Ñuka Shunku also features collaborations with fellow artists exploring the meeting of folk or roots music with electronica Rodrigo Gallardo, and El Búho alongside Alejandra Ortiz from the duo Minük.

Huaira and her band will be on tour in Europe this summer playing in seven cities and sharing their show in places like Fusion Festival in Germany, amongst others.

On Camino de Flores, his second full-length album, El Búho reimagines electronic music through the lense of the natural world and its rich soundscapes. 

Drawing on the inspiration of traditional rhythms and sounds, notably from Latin America, Camino de Flores is an album that transports you to another place. Following the success of his first LP, titled Balance, El Búho is back and takes us on a journey from high mountains to cascading waterfalls, from a dusky rainforest to a crackling fire beneath a clear, star-filled sky. The album charts a pathway between traditional rhythms, the sound of the natural world, IDM electronica and a deep, enveloping dancefloor sound. 

With rhythms, instruments and effects built from field recordings or “found sound”, on Camino de Flores it is often hard to distinguish between synths and drum machines, from birds, water, rain or crunching leaves.

Barro is the second EP by Manchester based Ecuadorian producer Joaquín Cornejo (@joaquincb). It is inspired by the power of soulful improvisation, field recordings, electronic experimentation and the cosy sound of magnetic tape.

Devenir Maleza was one of those projects that just arrived in our overflowing inboxes one day out of the blue. We opened the link and discovered four finely crafted, beautifully produced and captivating tracks of transformative, percussive music. 

It rare to find music that marries so well recorded percussion, live instrumentation and vocals with deep electronic productions without one dominating on the other. With Devenir Maleza Prisma and Martin Broder, a duo based between Berlin and Buenos Aires, managed to find that sweet spot that we love so much here at Shika Shika: deep, electronic but natural, acoustic and introspective. Or as the duo describes it: “a crackling, soothing, hypnotic lullaby.” 

Devenir Maleza’s was inspired by the concept of “becoming” and of transformation in many aspects. Through their long-distance collaboration the duo’s starting point was to imagine music becoming la maleza or “the undergrowth”, as if it the synths, vocals and instruments were sinking into the humid earth or drawn from the whistling wind or emerging from a rustling forest. 

The duo is joined on the EP by the talented singer and pianist Maria Barone as well as techno-producer / percussionist Merlin Genschel.

Hard to believe it has been four years since the birth of Shika Shika with the release of Barrio Lindo’s Kayak Break EP. Four years of being able to release music we love, artists that inspire us and the power of borderless, cultural cross-pollination.

Yet we have reached a crucial crossroads where it is time for the collective to evolve and grow. We want to embrace a vision that tries to find the sweet spot between music & activism, be it cultural and social empowerment or environmental awareness.

Cosmofania (inspired by Cosmogony - the study of the beginning of the universe) embraces this new beginning but also new artists and new sounds for ys. A deep, exciting anf refreshing new beginning!

With this compilation we are presenting a selection of new names we’d never heard of until our open call, old friends we somehow haven’t already worked with and amazing established names. It is a selection of beautiful, music by 13 talented musicians and producers from all over the world - Canada to Indonesia, Egypt to Argentina. They are tied together by an approach to electronic folk music, rich organic soundscapes and a sonic freshness

Karen y Los Remedios es la voz de Ana Karen Barajas, una artista e investigadora en arte de la ciudad de Guanajuato, y la música de jiony, productor de la Ciudad de México. De todos los años que llevan colaborando juntos, no habían encontrado una mejor manera de expresar sus desgracias como en este nuevo proyecto de Cumbia Downtempo (de ahí los remedios). Su primer lanzamiento con este sonido fue “Plexo Lunar” que salió a principios de este año y este EP es la continuación de su gusto por los cumbiones rebajados

The first single from "A Guide to the BIrdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean" comes from Belize's Garifuna Collective who interpreted the song of the Black Catbird.

This is the first single from an album of music inspired by the song of endangered birds with 100% of the profits going towards organisations working to protect them.

"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean” is the second Volume in the series following on from "A Guide to the Birdsong of South America", originally released on Robin's old label Rhythm and Roots. Volume I raised nearly 15,000 USD for two birding organisations and featured artists like Nicola Cruz, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Chancha Via Circuito.

For this second edition we have shifted focus north of the equator and to the vulnerability of bird species like the Momoto Carenado (Nicaragua), Ferminia (Cuba) and the Jamaican Blackbird (Jamaica), birds who have dwindled in numbers as a result of the environmental repercussions of climate change, deforestation and trapping for the pet trade.

For the album we chose 10 endangered or threatened bird species and challenged 10 of our favourite producers or musicians from the region. Working with the Xeno Canto birdsong community and the Macaulay Library, we sourced a recording of each bird’s song. Each artist was then asked to create an original piece of music inspired by the bird and its song.

The project would not have been possible without the support of an incredible Kickstarter community, helping us raise £12,599 in August 2019.

Once the costs of production have been covered, all of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Birds Caribbean, La Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica and Fundacion TXORI in Mexico. All profits from the sales of the record, music streaming, poster and t-shirt will be shared between these organisations who focus on engaging local communities to help improve and grow the bird tourism sector, create awareness of vulnerable birds with young people and crucially, provide rescue, rehabilitation and breeding programmes.
