This mix goes one full circle of BPMs, starting at 70 and going up to 140. I wanted to make a mix that strays away from my usual mixes of a slow, growing progression, of many layers and focus more on a selection of tracks I love, old and new. This is not about showcasing new music or about this normal mixtape concept but more like one of those old mixes of your favourite tracks taped from the radio ;) I embraced the fact that Pingipung are open to anything and this allowed me to experiment a bit more and put in tracks I wouldn't normally consider, from jazz to old-school Deep Medi Dubstep. Big thanks to Pingipung for the invite!!

We are at the end of 2022 and as tradition goes I am sharing my Cosmo-vision 2022 mix. This mix was a delight to make, digging back into my "MP3" crate of digital tracks I own from back in the day, rediscovering old gems in a new context, playing with their speed, style and adding my own touch to each of them. Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz released his debut album ‘Prender el Alma’. Like we do here at ZZK, with each release we put out a corresponding free mixtape. ‘Prender el Alma’ is a new strain of Latin American music Cruz calls ‘Andes Step’. Influenced by new digital technology, exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies in a modern setting, we’re proud to present our 22nd mixtape, a piece of ridiculous hot fire from Nicola Cruz.

Essentia #1: Peter Power

For a long time we have been wanting to launch a series of mixtapes that go somewhere else, that explore the inspirations behind a lot of the modern folk music Shika Shika releases. 

Today we are really happy share the first of these mixtapes from a new series we call Hilos or threads.

We couldn't think of anyone better to kick of this series than our good friend, Berlin based crate digger and Latin American music encyclopedia Diego Hernandez, AKA Qrichi. 

Qrichi, originally from Lima, Peru, is the founder of the collective Eck Echo , steadily infusing the electronic wires of Berlin with the heritage of South American and Caribbean music. From the barren Pacific deserts to the deep gorges of the Andes, Qrichi is always on the search for that life-changing record.

This first Hilos mix is a selection of true gems from all over the continent, a journey between huaynos, cumbias rebajadas, chicha music and much more. New discoveries, old classics and a timely reminder of the incredible richness of Latin American music that inspires so many of the modern producers we love.

This is the recording of my live set at @ShikaShikacollective 's London Showcase alongside History of Colour and @dj-Yeahman, it was a sweet night full of colourful tunes ❤

Despite the electricity in the club cut half way through my set for a couple of minutes I managed to go back and fix the recording pretty easily so here it is!
Over an hour of a live, semi improvised performance where I resample old tracks of mine creating new live versions and occasionally jam with my synthesiser.
