Anyone who was at the Bedrock party in Liverpool earlier this year will know that this is a musical city through and through, so its great to see one of Liverpool’s finest up and coming talents releasing his excellent music on John Digweed’s label. Jemmy’s Bedrock debut “Quarry Bank” appeared on the Bedrock 14 compilation in 2012 and paved the way for this debut single release

“Waterloo Blues” is pure summer sunshine magic with its delicious swirling melodies and scratchy beats. Jemmy has always eschewed genre, his knowledge and love for music from right across the spectrum, as well as his own unique sound, means he appeals to a wide range of DJs, borne out by the fact that the likes of John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Slam & Paco Osuna are giving him their support.

Jemmy is also making a big impact on the world of electronic music with his long standing DJ residencies with Freeze, as well as for the mighty Cream across Europe. He also has the rare and impressive claim of being the world’s first ever DJ to play at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral! During the day Jemmy runs his own record shop and label – Liverpool’s world-renowned 3B Records. It’s no wonder that big things are happening for this super-talented young man!

Fellow scouser and Circus master, Yousef, lends his support with his Circus Rework of “Waterloo Blues”, taking it on a deeper hypnotic journey to create a perfect package. The top rank international DJ, producer, club promoter and music aficionado shows exactly why he is at the top of his game and so respected.

In late January 2012 the Ruffcats spent three days and nights at the Lovelite studio in Berlin, where they recorded their debut album “The Essence Vol.1” on 8-track tape. The Ruffcats are one of Germany's hardest working backing bands, laying down grooves for singers like Flo Mega, Bajka or Georgia Ann Muldrow. On “The Essence Vol.1” the 8-piece band is doing their very own thing, banging out raw and dirty soul and funk cuts with a nod towards psych jazz and kraut groove. Needless to say that the music is tailor made for sampling. So we passed the master tapes to some of our favourite producers and asked them to have fun with it. If you listen to this record you may agree that the guys did a pretty decent job, cooking up their own stew based on the original ingredients prepared by The Ruffcats. On top of it, two local MCs are adding lyrics to go, which isn't a bad thing either. If I had to put it in one sentence: with Sopa de Tartaruga (Portuguese for turtle soup) Melting Pot Music is coming full circle.

Pete Rock was raised in Mount Vernon, but his face belongs on Mount Rushmore. The Chocolate Boy Wonder perfected an art form, inspired millions, and soundtracked a generation. By contrast, Teddy Roosevelt seems like a chump. 

This is the man who Dilla told, “I wanted to be like you.” Kanye once called himself the “new Pete Rock.” But the original Pete Rock remains permanently vital. The evidence bangs in his latest opus, Petestrumentals 2, the sequel to the 2001 classic that helped define the hip-hop instrumental record. It marks the legend’s first album on Mello Music Group, a fitting union between the author of the boom-bap blueprint and the label that’s expanded upon his legacy. 

Describing Pete Rock’s productions do them little justice. They resonate in your gut, heart, and brain. The title of one of these beats says it all: “Makes Me Feel Like.” You fill in the blanks based on your personal experience and current mood. 

Petestrumentals 2 conjures memories of BBQ cookouts and 70s Blaxploitation scores, rattling summer jeep cruises and blunted Jamaican vacations. There’s a gorgeous requiem to Dilla (“Dilla Bounce (R.I.P),” where the originator pays tribute to the prodigy. You see the full range of Rock’s gifts on display: the meticulously chopped horns, unquantized drums, and air raid sirens. It contains the emotion of a thousand eulogies. 

No record can’t be resurrected. There’s no sub-genre or era that can’t be converted into Rock’s singular brand of soul. His music is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a time-traveling DeLorean, effortlessly shifting between past, present, and future. 

For the last 20 years, hip-hop heads have argued over the best Pete Rock original productions and remixes. Is it “They Reminisce Over You” or the “Shut ‘Em Down Remix?” Do you prefer Soul Survivor or the first Petestrumentals, his work with INI or the UN? His catalogue can’t be compressed into a bio; you need a book. 

This is the latest chapter—an even 20 slaps and rhythmic levitations. It’s Pete Rock at his best, accelerating and kicking cosmic slop, extending wishes, hope, love, gritty drums and eternal wonder.

Underground rap heavyweights Nottz, Rapper Big Pooh, and Blu connect on this neck-breaking remix of “I’m Here,” a smooth and soulful single from Australian group Bankrupt Billionaires.

The Billionaires are anchored by the voice of the Queen of Brisbane Soul, Kel On Earth, and the production duo of Sammsonite and DATS. Their original take on “I’m Here” stems from their stellar and recently released sophomore album, 'Nobody’s Business.' The track was already dope in its own right with a strong funk-soul vibe and catchy vocals, and Nottz and his rapping collaborators have provided a slick, new coat of boom-bap paint. He subtly chopped up bits of the instrumental, laying a drums-first and bass-rich canvas for Pooh and Blu to kick knowledge and embrace the moment through their rhymes.

'Nobody’s Business' is out now via Hydrofunk Records/MGM. As for Nottz, he and Pooh also just dropped a new album, Home Sweet Home, while Nottz and Blu are gearing up to release their second project, 'Titans in the Flesh,' very soon.
