This is my new Track "Now and Always". It all started with the inspiration from the piece "Our World" by Audiomachine but it really evolved into a different direction, which isn't a bad thing after all 🙂.

Personally i especially like the last section, which gives me exactly the nostalgic feeling i wanted to create :-)

The olive tree is a symbol of nationality and connection to the land by Palestinians because of the tree’s slow growth and longevity. Although there is much to be celebrated in life, there is also much to feel sorrow for. I feel so sad each day seeing the horrific images and videos online of what is going on in Gaza - innocent civilians are being killed each day by airstrikes. Over 30,000 people including c. 13,000 children and many animals have so far been killed and that toll is mounting every single day. The levels of destruction are indescribable, not seen in my lifetime. I am heartbroken and I wish for an immediate end to the injustice, violence and suffering for all innocent civilians, and ever lasting peace. This piece is dedicated to all innocent lives lost and all innocent lives who are suffering. The viola leads the melody of this piece as I find that it sounds very elegiac.

Olive Tree by Shirley Ly for innocent lives lost | String Quartet, Lead Viola by John Hird

This song is part of our album, The Windmill of the Year, and it represents the Autumn Equinox. The bardic purpose of this ancient Celtic mythic tale about the rescue of Mabon was to illustrate the importance of the Animal Spirits, and their long memories, to the shaman who goes to them for guidance in the Underworld. 

This originally orally-conveyed yarn was drawn in the constellations of the polar stars, and it's entitled How Culhwch Won Olwen. It’s also the earliest Celtic myth featuring Arthur Pendragon.

Our hero Culhwch (Hercules) was born in a pig pen and raised by sows, but he eventually went on to win the hand of the beautiful princess Olwen (Ursa Minor or Little Bear), who had been kept from him by her ogre father Yspaddaden (Draco).

However, like all heroes that make their epic rite-of-passage journey around Merlin’s Round Table of the Stars, Culhwch has to pass a number of trials first, and one of them is to find and release Mabon, the Wondrous Youth, who had been imprisoned before Time had even begun.  

Yet he cannot even attempt this impossible Quest without the help of his cousin, Arthur Pendragon (Ursa Major or Great Bear) Olwen’s monstrous, one-eyed uncle Custennin, the Wild Herdsman (Bootes), Drudwyn the Hound (Cor Caroli), the Eagle (Aquila) and the Salmon (Cetus).

Mabon

In the Chapel was composed specifically to capture the wonderful moment of performing at London's spectacular Old Royal Naval College’s Chapel of St Peter & St Paul, which is part of a World Heritage Site. This chapel was part of Sir Christopher Wren’s original design for the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich built in 1742 then following a devastating fire, was rebuilt in 1779. It is decorated with a mixture of Greek revival and naval motifs with cream and light blue colours against its magnificent neoclassical ceiling. 

Behind the altar is the huge painting titled Preservation of St Paul after Shipwreck at Malta by artist Benjamin West. The artwork depicts the scene in the Acts of the Apostles in which Saint Paul is shipwrecked on his way to Rome where he will be prosecuted. In the middle, Paul stands heroically over the fire lit by the ship’s passengers to keep warm. Intruding on the scene is the snake from whose poisonous bite Paul does not feel. A must visit place in London!

He was so tired ...he’d been walking for weeks ...with a leg aching from the wound he’d taken at that last battle ...in which so many had been killed. 

He stopped by a farm gate, and then he leaned on it to light his pipe, and he remembered, once again, the sound of the vultures screaming as they came in to feed on the corpses. It was etched on his soul. 

He was no longer the arrogant young man who’d left his homeland with a cocky spring in his step. His face was now lined like a road map, showing all the places he’d been and all the horrors he’d seen. 

As he drew on his pipe, he looked up to see a lush green valley stretching out before him, and it seemed familiar. The streets and playgrounds of the village below were just like those he’d played in as a child, such a long time ago... Then he gasped as he realised ...he was nearly home! 

He wanted to run, but he could only stumble along the lane, dragging his leg behind him. Full of doubt now, fears for how he’d be received having left them all such a long time ago, and under a cloud...he wondered, would they even recognise him? 

Through eyes blurred with tears, he saw two young boys coming along the lane, with their mother close behind ...but no, surely not? Was this his daughter, now grown and matured?

 The woman smiled in recognition. 

“We’ve been waiting for you,” she cried out as she ran towards him. And it was then that he saw it...The circle of life... and in a flash, he remembered greeting his own father returning along this very lane, as he must have his father before him. 

Then he felt them both in his heart as it dawned on him that they had never been away, that his forefathers had stood guard around him as he had fought to protect his homeland ...just as these two small boys may have to one day... 

"But not yet.. he silently prayed, "please God ...not just yet..." And he clasped his family to his breast.

She has produced 4 albums: 9 Lives (2023), Paradise (2023), Blossom (2021), and Impetus (2018) and released multiple singles i.e. Olive Tree (2024), Emerald (2023), and London Strive (2023). Her music has been played around a million times across more than 100 countries around the world spanning six continents, including by BBC radio. Shirley plays the piano in all of her pieces.

The pieces in her albums aim to capture her reflections on life experiences relating to nature (i.e., swallows' journeys to their nests, the seasons, swans), living in London, dance, relationships with family and other loved ones, travel (i.e. to Berlin, Amsterdam), and dreams. Paradise (2023) is inspired by her experiences of swimming, diving, sailing, and surfing in the ocean, and she hopes that her music can further emphasise its importance. 
 
9 Lives (2023) is inspired by the beauty, charm and mysteriousness of cats. She lives in London with her five cats, and gain a lot of inspiration from them. This album aims to raise money for animal charities in areas which need support the most.

She is currently working on classical and electronic music works inspired by her travels in Southeast Asia.
