At the risk of dance music blasphemy, I’m releasing a project I’ve had in my head for a long time.  The greatest commercial DJ Mix of all time, in my opinion, and that of many others, is “ Renaissance - The Mix Collection” by Sasha and Digweed.  Originally released in October of 1994, it became an instant classic for many ravers and clubbers across the globe. The mix started the entire DJ mix compilation market, and that is no overstatement.  The superb track selection and absolute mixing perfection delivered an indelible mark on dance music history that, to that point, could only be heard in the underground clubs, notably at Renaissance in Mansfield, England.

Thirty years on, this DJ Mix still sounds amazing to old and new listeners alike. There are too many compelling reasons why this mix works to list here.

Over the years, many of the tracks played across the three CDs have been remixed. Others have not. My thought was, what would it sound like if all three CDs were recreated track for track, using nothing but remixes?  

Apparently, I was not the only one who had this idea.  As I was compiling remixes, working on the mix in late 2024, I checked out the latest mix from the amazing Framewerk, and lo and behold, their NYE2025 set is a close recreation of Disc 1 of The Mix Collection using their own remixes.  First off, I wish I was at the club where they played this set.  Second, I thought the idea was now taken.  

Finally, I thought they released one track for which I desperately needed a remix of - Bladerunner - Til We Meet Again.

In the end, I decided to continue with my project. My mix uses remixes from many different artists, including Framewerk. While breaks are my first love, I’m using a mix of 4/4 and breakbeat remixes to complete this project. I created my own edits for a few tracks for which I could not find a good remix. 

So here is Disc 1 of the “Re-Mix Collection.” Sourcing all the tracks was not easy. I found remixes on the usual sights like Beatport and Bandcamp.  Some remixes are quite close to the originals with breaks instead of 4/4, or slight alternate genres,  others like Mattr's remix of Mephisto are almost unrecognizable from the Renaissance version.

‘Lost In Lockdown’ Week 8 - Sasha 25th Anniversary Essential Mix @ Que Club.

In 1995, BBC Radio 1 and Cream put together their 'Live' tour with amazing line ups and aired them 'live' for the first time on the radio for listeners. On the Saturday 27th May, The ‘Grande Finale’ of the tour was at the legendary ‘Que Club’ in Birmingham and boasted a line up that featured the biggest Dj’s in the UK at that time. An all-night affair at a club that could hold thousands from 10pm-6am was a first of it’s kind and for the first time you could sit at home listening to the music and madness erupting.

After Sasha & John Digweed’s 1994 Renaissance album had converted and gained so many more fans to the duos epic brand of House Music, 1995 was to take it to the next level. The advancements in the sound they started playing was to be an insight into the future of electronic music. Progressive House suddenly had a harder edge and pushed the boundaries of sound using technology far away from the traditional House music sound with piano and soulful vocals. 

The reason I have chosen to commemorate this mix is that it changed my outlook on House music. I have always enjoyed all genres of music but back then we didn’t have the amounts of genres and sub-genres enjoyed now. I knew I was hearing something very different.

I recorded the whole broadcast from start to finish, swapping 90 min tapes in and out, barely containing my excitement for what I was hearing and capturing. The crowd noises, Tong’s voice bellowing out over the roar of the crowd announcing the DJ's – it was just amazing, literally AMAZING.

Out of all the mixes, it was, of course, Sasha’s that caught my attention and engaged me more than all the other mixes. Having already seen him play this was the nucleus for a brand new Sasha obsession.

To celebrate 25 years since Sasha played the mix live on air that Saturday evening (I still have the original tape, see pic) I’m going to play all the tracks he played* and hope to give us all the sense of nostalgia and wonderment I felt that night.

Most of the tracks are recordings from my vinyl collection before I sold it all to a collector back in 2014.

The mix itself is only around 80 mins so I’ll play some extra tracks from his other sets around the same time.

For myself, 1995 was my favourite year of clubbing ever. The music, the DJ’s the energy at that time was explosive. Join me and let’s take the journey back together.

From the silk roads of yore to the modern industrial shipping lanes on the high seas, Shmoo's sound is universal sonic commerce for the contemporary ear lobe.

A driving force in the Chicago House scene for over two decades, Shmoo is known for his acclaimed You Are Here series with Derrick Carter at the legendary Spybar and his groundbreaking studio work alongside Gramaphone’s Garrett David. Having previously held residencies at Berlin Nightclub, Copa Lounge, East Room, Electric Hotel, Estate, and the infamous Tanto’s afterhours, Shmoo has left his mark on dance floors across the city.

His debut EP on the iconic Love Notes From Brooklyn label sold out worldwide and earned support from Honey Dijon on BBC Radio 1. During the global club shutdown, Shmoo helped to co-launch SHFFT, a cutting-edge multimedia project that kept the underground spirit alive. He was also invited as a featured guest on DJ Heather's CHI FI SHOW Twitch livestream.

Recognized as one of only six DJs honoured by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events for excellence in House music production, promotion, and performance, Shmoo stands among legends like DJ Lady D, Steve Miggedy Maestro, and Duane Powell. His contributions haven’t gone unnoticed: 5 Magazine has hailed him as one of “the best people working on the scene in Chicago” and a “hometown hero.”

Shmoo’s remix of “Mack Blagic” by Groovy Drew on Jason Merle’s 4E&A imprint has garnered the support of Carl Cox, while his release “Split Up The Get Go” on the same label climbed to #2 on Beatport’s After Hour Essentials: Deep House chart and #6 on their Best New Deep House chart.

His recent release, “Love With Someone”, a collaboration with Chicago’s ilana ariella on her Cheap Talk label, has received support from Alinka, Sam Divine, Francesca Lombardo, Benji Calendario, Joseph Capriati, Marco Carola, Satoshi Fumi, Paco Osuna, Severino Panzetta, Hans Thalau, and James Zabiela, among others. The Audio Soul Project (aka Mazi) remix was featured on Traxsource’s Essential Garage chart and peaked at #28 on their Top 100 Garage chart.

In addition to his work as an artist and producer, Shmoo manages A&R for Cheap Talk, helping to shape the label’s forward-thinking sound.

Shmoo’s latest release “UFO Racing At Dusk” is out now on 4E&A, featuring a remix from Jason Merle. The original mix was selected as #5 on Beatport’s Week 16 Weekend Picks House chart.
