Lauren Sesselmann is a Green Bay, Wisconsin native and a Canadian international Women’s soccer player. 

She played for numerous teams in both the NWSL and WPS while also taking home a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in London and competing in the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada . Lauren attended college at Purdue University where she played soccer and graduated with a degree in marketing and communications.

We talk to Ali Krieger about the highs and lows of her ACL injury recovery. She opens up about what was frustrating about return to sport, how she learned to value a different perspective while sitting on the sideline, and how her script of what happened in the following years couldn’t of been written any more perfect. 

She talks about her initial feelings, the hardest mental and physical battles she faced, and how she used small goals each day to help her feel the progress of her recovery.

Dan Abrahams is a Sports Psychologist and Author from England who has worked with some of the most elite footballers and golfers in the world. 

I learned about Dan through a former teammate, Allie Long, who worked with Dan leading up to her selection and competition with the USWNT in the Rio Olympics. 

The mental side of sports and injury recovery is so important. While reading one of Dan's books (his free eBook on his website actually), I read a part that really resonated with me and I thought I should share with you all. 

“The words you use determine the pictures you see which drives your confidence and subsequently determines your performance”

Just like in sports performance, what you are telling yourself your mind believes. Dan helps us look at the injury recovery in a different light and how we can use our brain power for good.

032: Sports Psychologist Dan Abrahams Talks Sports and Injury Recovery

As athletes, we have a tendency to try and hide our feelings or not show vulnerability. It is in being vulnerable that you actually find healing and develop strength within yourself through the injury recovery process. I talk about my feelings on how expressing feelings and asking for help is key in healing.

037: How Vulnerability Shows Strength

Dr. Gregory DiFelice is looking at ACL injuries in a whole new light. After studying ACL injuries and all the techniques used to reconstruct them, he is now performing ACL repair surgeries on hundreds of patients a year. We talk about the difference between an ACL repair and an ACL reconstruction. What lead him to believe he should have another look at ACL repairs after they were done years and years ago. We talk about the difference in recovery and he also shows me some of the information from his keynote lecture in a recent sports medicine convention in Poland. Julie Hubbard is a former NCAA Division 1 collegiate athlete playing soccer at Penn State and UCONN. After multiple knee injuries, Julie used her rehabilitation process as a way to learn more about herself and what was next in her life. She is now a physical therapist in the Boston area helping athletes everyday recover from injuries.

Julie talks to SYS about how she leaned on her family during her rehab, why staying involved with her team helped her process, and what she is doing now to help reduce the risk of injuries in young athletes.
