Born and raised behind the iron curtain, I started listening to EBM, Industrial and Electro-Industrial in 1992 and have been collecting music, making mixtapes and playing at parties ever since. Even back then in the 90’s, I was interested in unusual futuristic stuff, like the Skinny Puppy side project named Download or Rhys Fulbers Project Noise Unit. In the late 90s, I got very much in touch with IDM and Electro, mostly through artists like Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen, Plaid, Autechre and Aphex Twin.

I bought my first synthesizer and drum computer in 1999, a Yamaha SY 77 and a Boss DR202, starting to experiment with them and to record stuff. However, in 2008, I got on a very antimaterialistic trip while moving from Berlin to Leipzig, sold all my gear and just kept my acoustic guitar.

After years of studiying, research work and family founding, I decided to slowly get back into making electronic music because passion never fades.

Today we introduce you to the Electro producer and live act OBZERV, based in the U.K. His music inspired by concepts from the realms of science fiction and through his subtle observation of life.

1. Which artists has influenced you the most?

- There is not one artist that has inspired me the most, different artists are constantly inspiring me in different ways. Two artists that come to mind straight away are Animistic Beliefs and The Outsert. These two artist have been inspiring me recently to create music that doesn’t specifically confine to any genre and takes inspiration from different genres and cultures to create something that is different.

2. What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- I have not been working very much on releasing music at the moment but you can expect to see some of my electro work on Cultivated Electronics and GunFinger Food in the coming year.

3. Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- I really have no idea. I want to release some of my new music eventually but I am always asking myself which labels would be good for me to release on. For listening pleasure I have been listening to mostly friends music recently, labels such as Patchbay Records, Gunfinger Food feel relevant to me at the moment because I personally feel involved in their journey.

4. What inspires you now to create music?

- I mostly inspired by my friends to create music. I am constantly working with friends and in the midst of collaboration I feel that my most creative side comes out. I feel a lot more inspired when working with someone than when I am alone, I think this is because you have someone to bounce ideas back and fourth with and I feel a lot less judgmental about my work.

5. What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I have been gigging a bit recently so have been using my hardware to write music for my live sets. I am using a Digitakt, Digitone, SH01A, Micromonsta, a rat distortion pedal and a strymon deco tape saturation pedal. I will create ideas with this set up and try to make them into full tracks later on using ableton to record the sounds.

Strange But Dance Music LIVE #11: OBZERV

Analogical Force welcomes back @moy for his third outing on the label. ‘Ghostware EP’ delivers four tracks that push his hybrid of braindance, acid and electro into bold new territory.

Side A opens with Kernel Panic, a pacy cut that flips between breakbeats and 4/4 drive, punctuated by TR727 whistles and percussion, before Megazone dives into chopped breaks, thick bass and a conversation between a 303 and FM-modulated 101. Together they form a high-energy pairing that refracts rave DNA into something sharper and more futuristic.

On the flip, the title track Ghostware goes widescreen with heavy bass, intricate breakbeat manipulations, the unmistakable Korg M1 piano and soaring melodic acid, all tied together by wistful pads and sudden reverbs. Voidwave closes the EP on a darker, twisted note, with slithering AFX Station basslines, constantly evolving acid, and breaks chopped into timing flips that constantly disorient the rhythm.

With Ghostware, MOY refines his sound while embracing new techniques and sharper contrasts. It’s his most progressive and fully realised work to date for Analogical Force, reaffirming both artist and label’s place at the forefront of modern braindance.
