Experimental hip-hop/jazz quartet Bokoya team up with Cologne-based producer / guitarist Gianni Brezzo (Jakarta Records) for ‘El Cielo’, the first single from their upcoming project on Melting Pot Music.

Bokoya describe themselves as a four-headed human drum machine that play impro-vised beat music. You can call it jazz if you like (all four members are graduated jazz musicians btw) but be ready to stumble over some Dilla, Kraut Rock, Ambient or Dub in the mix. We recommend their double-album ‘Hausensession’ (MPM 2022) as a reference point.

Gianni Brezzo's music is a bit easier to access but not less leftfield. Jazz is a major influ-ence, but it goes way further. On his album ‘Tutto Grosso’ (Jakarta, 2022), Brezzo rides a sonic wave similar to Matthew Halsall, Surprise Chef, El Michels Affair and BadBadNot-Good. 

The recording sessions took place at the Gottesweg Studios in Cologne where Bokoya and Gianni Brezzo jammed for three days and nights based on some basic sketches and beat. The sessions were edited and arranged after by Bokoya and Brezzo but no overdubs added.

"This song, like a lot of my pieces, first started out as a beat that I made in Garage Band on my iPad. 

I wrote it after going back on the road for the first time after meeting my now wife, to help finish up Rebecca Rego’s album (at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco). It’s a celebration of loving someone enough to miss them when they aren’t around. 

It’s become a staple of my live sets for a few years now. The take we used for the album comes from a show with the Illinois chapter of my Pressure Fit band – recorded live at The Iron Post jazz club in downtown Urbana.  For years, The Iron Post was the hub for Jazz music in that area, showcasing students and legendary locals alike for decades, until the owner's untimely passing in 2021 (RIP Paul).

When listening back to the live recording, my bass trumpet solo felt like it could use some embellishment for the album – so I reached out to the reed specialist himself, Morgan Price (of Antibalas, Ikebe Shakedown, and work with Beyoncé, J Cole, Czarface & MF DOOM, etc…) to help me out.  I hand-wrote the new parts out on score paper while on the road with Lucky Chops and Morgan knocked it out of the park for me at his home studio in Brooklyn."

Wondem Remixed is a humble compilation of reworkings by some of my colleagues in Los Angeles and the UK. I asked musicians who were already interested or involved in my musical explorations or who lived in a parallel universe. In other words, I didn't force it on a who's who of "remixers" and as a result this body of work has a more organic and personal sense about it. The collection starts with a masterful reimagining by Brainfeeder beat maestro Ras G who has played a couple of shows with us. He took elements from the entire Wondem record and created an Afrikan Space Program classic. Producer and drummer Te'Amir Sweeney plays with the Wondem band and brought his sonic expertise with a crazy ambient remix of Saba. Emerging production collective Stomach Club, whom I met through my good friend and co-producer Carlos Niño one night in Venice, went all-in and vibey on the Somalian-inspired tune Xamar. Carlos himself provided a spirited soundscape featuring tracks from the entire record. International DJ and KCRW.com favorite Jeremy Sole took Lalibela to a new place with his awesome musicality and sensitivity. Prolific trumpeter, Ethio Cali bandleader and arranger Todd Simon did a sublime dub version of one of the more popular tunes on the record Sidet Eskemeche. The compilation is also blessed by an Al Dobson Jr. appearance. He completely flipped Mowa and I am grateful to him. Last but not least are two exceptional perspectives on Merkato Star and Eastern Prayer by our London-based homie Kutmah. 

I am very proud of this Wondem Remixed offering and hope you find some new inspiration for yourself in here.

Cosmic Compositions is proud to present “SAMBO”, the new single by Hungarian producer and keyboardist, Àbáse. Following the release of the single ‘Align’ feat. Wayne Snow, Àbáse returns with a new single ‘SAMBO’, exploring again the topics of unity and togetherness.

The instrumental part of “Sambo” was recorded by Àbáse in Berlin’s Red Bull Studios in one live take, without using a click track. Àbáse later travelled to Ghana, where he met Stevo Atambire and they recorded Stevo’s singing and kologo playing in Kwame Yeboah’s famous Kwashibu Area studio in Accra, where Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas recorded their recent albums.

‘Sambo’ is an intricate mixture of funk, jazz and afro elements, representing the musical direction Àbáse is heading. Live, free, spiritual and dance- oor oriented. The producer has been an active part of the versatile Hungarian music jazz and hip-hop scene. He has been a member of several successful Hungarian acts, such as Amoeba, Soulclap Budapest and the project - The Mabon Dawud Republic - a fourteen piece Afrobeat orchestra guest- starring Dele Sosimi and he has honed his skills as a keyboard player and musical director, proving to be a world class musician. He now comes back with a killer track enriched with Stevo Atambire’s voice.

We are absolutely in love with the luscious grooves of "Moon Crab". Falling somewhere between jazz, electronic music and modern funk, whilst evoking the futuristic soulful boogie sound pioneered by Kaidi Tatham, et al. Due for release on a limited 7" vinyl, September 21, via Angis Music, with a special vocal duet ballad, "Absence", on the flip.

HUMA is a new concept from Alberto Lincetto and Stefano Cosi, both musicians and producers belonging to the Italian experimental soul and jazz scene. Already active in other projects such as PCKT and Collettivo Immaginario, they boast collaborations with international artists such as Chauncey Yearwood, Tommaso Cappellato and Serena Brancale. The debut EP presents two very different scenarios where the solidity and minimalism of the rhythms blend with the deep yet reﬁned harmonies. "Moon Crab" is the reminiscence of a cosmic journey with modern funk features, where a liquid and indeﬁnite sound mass slowly evolves into a climax of drums and synthesizers, giving life to an irrepressible ﬂow of emotions. “Absence”, instead, with its melancholic tones and electronic acoustic sound represents a perfect epilogue with an open ending. The rest we will discover just by listening.
