“Bardo” is a Tibetan word meaning literally “between two,” which in Buddhism refers to the idea that within Samsara all states of existence are not static, but are actually continuous, successive, ordered facets of beginningless transition.  What we usually refer to as “life and death” are only two among the six bardos that are traditionally enumerated. 

Each Bardo has its own form of expression and development, and each presents beings with unique opportunities for the realization of enlightenment, or for advancement toward enlightenment, or conversely for decline into greater suffering.  Bardo teachings such as these are an important key to knowing where we are, which way to go, and  how to proceed.

Troma Nagmo Concise Chod

Although the Buddha taught only one ultimate truth, because listeners of the teachings come from a wide variety of backgrounds, minds and elements, there are many different sutras.  Here, Rinpoche presents the Thousand Hands Sutra, revisiting it for many reasons: one being because it’s very popular in Korea and another, because it is one of the most celebrated sutras of theTang Dynasty in of China.  In this particular sutra, the Buddha talks about the dharani (mantra) of Avalokiteshvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion).  Reading and/or saying this dharani out loud, you can accumulate a lot of merit.  And Rinpoche teaches on the meaning and character of this dharani, which in essence is its great compassion.

Dedication “Protecting All Beings” (Toh 286) is a prayer of dedication that strongly resonates with the later Tibetan literature of mind training (blo sbyong). In addition to the classic element of dedication of merit to all beings, a substantial part of the text comprises a passage that enumerates the many faults, shortcomings, and afflictions that burden sentient beings, as well as the many possible attainments that they consequently may not have realized, and culminates in the wish that everything negative that would otherwise ripen for sentient beings may ripen instead for the reciter, so that all sentient beings would thus be liberated and purified.

"The Dhāraṇī of Parṇaśavarī" [https://read.84000.co/translation/toh736.html] is a short incantation dedicated to the piśācī Parṇaśavarī, who is renowned in Buddhist lore for her power to cure disease, avert epidemics, pacify strife, and otherwise protect those who recite her dhāraṇī from any obstacles they may face.
