Manjushree manifests in many forms. He may be white, orange or black and may appear on a lion or holding a sword and a book. He can be human or non-human, a garden or a bridge. Any place where we feel closer to the truth is also an emanation of Manjushree. But only when we free ourselves from the distinctions of outward appearances and the concepts of time and permanence, can we really be introduced to Manjushree. Understanding that phenomena appear but they have no intrinsic existence is the true nature of Manjushree and the essence of all the buddhas.

In Buddha’s vision, there is something called mind, and this mind wants to be happy and to avoid pain. Happiness can be gained by thinking about the past and planning for the future, but we risk getting entangled in all sorts of false stories while real benefit comes from being in the present moment, focusing on what we have. In fact, nothing can make us completely happy, not material things nor values and beliefs. Buddha also views appearances as deceptive. What we see, hear and taste is just our perception and whatever we are experiencing is a projection coming from our disorderly mind. This is what Buddha calls wisdom, which must be united with compassion to create genuine benefit for our world.

Having a transcendental, or bird's-eye view is very important in human relationships. Buddha once said that family and human relationships should be seen as like a hotel, where people check in and then they check out. They may stay a long time, but eventually they go in different directions. There are also many causes and conditions and karmic connections we may not be aware of, but which influence how we interact with others. If we can look at our lives with a more transcendental view, we can transform our human relationships.
