The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra presents a fundamental view of the Buddha Dharma and how we can follow the path to an awakened mind. For Mahayana practitioners, this sutra is the essence of the Buddha’s teachings. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche gives a brief introduction to the sutra on Saga Dawa, a very special day when the Buddha fully awakened to the truth.

Practising vipassana is all about experiencing life directly. Sadhana is a systematic means to reach a goal. Though traditional sadhana practice might involve ritual offerings and visualisation of deities, the ultimate goal is to have this direct experience. Traditionally, vipassana practice is associated with sitting straight and focusing on the breath. This practice has much merit and should be upheld, but to apply vipassana in the modern world we need to adopt a much more abundant and infinite approach. We need to train our minds through the contemplation of impermanence, “unsatisfactoriness” (dukkha) and emptiness to find the courage to go outside our comfort zones, to see the world as it is and find liberation through a direct experience of the truth.

Medieval Noel (SATB with piano and clarinet or other wind) was written for the Vancouver Cansing Choir for their Harmony of Hope concert, Dec 2, 2025. The piece is a re-imagining of three medieval texts, weaving together adapted historical melodies with newly composed material. Throughout the work, the piano and clarinet dance in and around the choral lines, adding colour, motion, and a festive sense of interplay. Piano - Sasha Luchkov and clarinet - Claire Lloyd.

ཡངས་པའི་གྲོང་ཁྱེར་དུ་འཇུག་པའི་མདོ་ཆེན་པོ།

Invited to visit the city of Vaiśālī, which has been ravaged by a terrible epidemic, the Buddha instructs Ānanda to stand at the city’s gate and recite a proclamation, a long mantra, and some verses that powerfully evoke spiritual well-being. Ānanda does so, and the epidemic comes to an end. One of the mahāsūtras related to the literature of the Vinaya, this text, like other accounts of the incident, has traditionally been recited during times of personal or collective illness, bereavement, and other difficulties.
