Bodhicitta has been characterised as kindness, compassion, and the wish to release all beings from suffering. This is correct but does not convey the complete picture. Bodhicitta also involves freeing beings from the causes of suffering. Everyone wants to be free from suffering, but does everyone want to be free from happiness? Probably not, but from the bodhicitta point of view happiness is also problematic, because happiness is a fabricated condition and cannot be trusted or relied upon. A bodhisattva wishes to free sentient beings from all phenomena:  this is what makes bodhicitta unique. Bodhicitta is more accurately characterised as the union of wisdom and skilful means, with the aspiration of awakening all beings to the truth.

This sutra was initiated by Shakyamuni Buddha, at the end of a retreat in Vaishali. Present were monks, bodhisattvas, ghosts, nagas and rakshas: an audience of many different types of beings. Among them was a bodhisattva called Supreme Joy, who posed 17 questions concerning how a bodhisattva can help all sentient beings. These questions lead us outside the limits of conventional thinking, to consider what it means to have genuine compassion for the multiplicity of sentient beings. This eon is good because more than 1,000 Buddhas and more than 84,000 ways of accessing the truth will appear.

MEDICINE BUDDHA

The inner practice of liberation is not an individual matter. One of the deepest realizations that comes when we meditate, as we pay attention, as we live a life of care and loving awareness, is the growing sense of interdependence. There is no separation between our body and the body of the earth. The minerals of the soil make up our wheat and our bones, the storm clouds become our
drinks and our blood, the oxygen from the trees and forests is the air we breathe. 

The human community is equally interconnected. If we meet together in harmony and respect, care for the vulnerable among us, tend to the environment, and respect our citizens and neighbors, we will thrive and prosper.

Am I dead or am I dreaming? 👻  

Bardo teachings are commonly believed to be concerned with death but in fact encompass the whole of the Buddha’s teachings. The Tibetan word bardo refers to an intermediate state, between past and future, a crossing or a junction, in which a decision has to be made. This place of decision, this cognizance, is the bardo. This bardo is none other than our buddhanature, innately perfect, which the bardo practices lead us to uncover and reveal. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains the bardo states and their associated practices, drawing on commentaries by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche and Tsele Natsok Rangdrol.

Practising vipassana is all about experiencing life directly. Sadhana is a systematic means to reach a goal. Though traditional sadhana practice might involve ritual offerings and visualisation of deities, the ultimate goal is to have this direct experience. Traditionally, vipassana practice is associated with sitting straight and focusing on the breath. This practice has much merit and should be upheld, but to apply vipassana in the modern world we need to adopt a much more abundant and infinite approach. We need to train our minds through the contemplation of impermanence, “unsatisfactoriness” (dukkha) and emptiness to find the courage to go outside our comfort zones, to see the world as it is and find liberation through a direct experience of the truth.

"The Dhāraṇī of Parṇaśavarī" [https://read.84000.co/translation/toh736.html] is a short incantation dedicated to the piśācī Parṇaśavarī, who is renowned in Buddhist lore for her power to cure disease, avert epidemics, pacify strife, and otherwise protect those who recite her dhāraṇī from any obstacles they may face.
