In the summer of 2013, Above & Beyond performed some of their best-loved songs acoustically as part of a 15-piece band, across four sold out shows at London's famous Porchester Hall which formed the basis of the "Above & Beyond Acoustic" studio album. The album was recorded in the spring and summer of 2013 and features a 24-piece orchestra.

"The acoustic project is a reconnection with the musicians that we were before we met", said Above & Beyond's Tony McGuinness. "The songs have been on an interesting journey to get here because we tend to write in a fairly acoustic way anyway. We don't just stick a bit of vocal over a dance track - that's not how we work. We try to start with a song and it's usually only later down the line that we take certain elements from that song and progress them into a more dancefloor-friendly version".

With Above & Beyond "Acoustic", the group are putting aside their CDJs and lighting rigs to showcase their deeply-rooted musicianship and classical training. A band first and foremost, Above & Beyond are songwriters as much as they are DJs. Working with three singers, a string quartet, harpist, drummer and bassist, Above & Beyond are pushing the boundaries of dance music. Tony McGuinness sings and plays guitar, mandolin and ukulele, Paavo Siljamäki plays the grand piano and cello, and Jono Grant plays the Rhodes piano, guitar and vibraphone.

Boxcutter has been more than a significant blip on the underground's radar since his first vinyl release in 2005. Barry, alias Boxcutter, was first noticed by Paul Rose (Scuba), arriving on Hot Flush with several very strong and collectible releases, before moving to Planet Mu in 2006. This brought about a long line of releases, including 4 LP's for the seminal label, which are quoted by many of today's established electronic music artists as being inspirational to their own development.

Recently, we have seen Boxcutter delving into a range of tempos as wide as the gap between him and his peers: his 4th LP "The Dissolve" fused the organic with the synthetic into lush, brightly-hued compositions, to critical acclaim. From dancehall to hip-hop via jazz funk and hypnagogic pop, it ranged far and wide for inspiration, and soon after in 2012 we saw a name change, and with it a refreshed approach to track-building. "The Host" joined the dots between vintage library music radiophonics, worn out soul music, and cassette-addled footwork, and also notably featured more upfront guitar playing than his previous releases.

The close of 2013 sees Barry reaching out to Cosmic Bridge, supplying 6 tracks of further experimentation in the 160 bpm realm, taking inspiration from Cosmic Bridge's label boss Om Unit, and fellow uptempo cohort Machinedrum, and title inspiration from Erik Davis's book "TechGnosis" (on the meeting of technology and mysticism).

Crafted by reaching into the crates for dusty synth tones and drums, and combining these with guitar lines and 808 drums, Barry creates a sound that is subtle and forward thinking, but coloured by older styles and sonics.

Gnosis is released on December the 16th on Cosmic Bridge.

This installment of our White Label Series comes from 21 year old LA-based producer and drummer, J Louis. You may remember Mr. Louis as the resourceful young man who experimented with beatmaking on his iPhone in the past. This time, he's been working with Ableton and other music creation programs to develop his signature sound further.

Erased Tapes artists and friends Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm have separately carved out a musical career that defies genres both with their unique live shows and a loyal fan base that’s always eager to hear what their prolific output will bring. 

Their latest collaborative 2-track release ‘Life Story Love and Glory’ is a live improv affair on two pianos, recorded in 2012 at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin. Fans may wonder why they have waited until 2015 to release these tracks, but having revealed a new website www.arnaldsfrahm.com you may think this may not be the end to their musical story this year. 

“We would meet in Reykjavik or Berlin with the intention to share some days off work, hiking, swimming or eating pizza. That is great for a couple days, but after a while we would always end up back in the studio, fiddling with synths or pianos.” – Nils Frahm

Containing five synthesiser-led pieces, ‘Loon’ was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues on from the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For this new EP the duo wired an Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the mixing desk and performed live takes on both instruments. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape.

Like on ‘Stare’, their first collaborative affair in 2012, they simply followed what was laying in front of them, and this time they were driven by some new synths, a kick drum and tape effects. Indulging in dub, the tracks where all performed rather than engineered, with Ólafur riding a few elements on faders and Nils bringing effects in and out. After running several mixes, they went for the five strongest moments from this session. The release was announced on a joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com together with the launch of an intimate 45-minute studio film titled ‘Trance Frendz’, featuring another seven improvisations.

“When I was young I was smuggled to Goa parties by my brother. The music played there in the late nineties had a somewhat deep effect on me. ‘Loon’ is almost a blurry memory of these times. In other words, it is what I’d like to remember that music sounded like back then. In fact it sounded probably really cheesy.” – Nils Frahm
