The latest firmware update for the Virtual Utopia servers has been released, offering a simulated experience audio-coded by london-based Bethan (@bethan_l). A luscious adventure through dreamy organics, transiently spanning downtempo to trance, all immersed in sheer chromatic layers of formless, ethereal beauty. 

Here, the water glows with an otherworldly luminescence, and the delicate ripples shimmer with a soft purity that calms the soul. You breathe deeply, the clean air surrounding you radiates a warming hum so present it's almost audible. The hum feels omnibenevolent—so harmonious it seems to stretch beyond the boundaries of the physical, vibrating in tune with a dimension where only pure energy exists.

From beneath the translucent waters, something begins to rise—a presence, a fractal unfolding of light and sound, fluid and formless, bending and shifting with the rhythm of existence. It is a living, breathing connection between the unseen and the seen, a metaphysical healer from a distant reality resonating on frequencies higher than those known in our world.

The sky overcast, the air a bit chilly and flecked with an occasional rain drop. Spring is looking a bit subdued at the moment here in Brooklyn. All being said, there is still an energetic feeling when walking through the city and seeing the evening come alive with the comings and goings of a million people.

Like a perfect soundtrack to a night time ride through New York, Margaux Gazur’s forth-coming LP on Smallville gives feelings of introspection albeit with a bit of a twist. Through deft use of softer melodic pads, and interesting percussive patterns, Margaux keeps things fresh and lends an edge to a familiar auditory locale.

Su Phu, coming at C1 on the double vinyl release (digital as well, so don’t worry there) starts as a dark, rolling affair, with crunching textured sounds panning around rhythmic bass lines that persist throughout. As the track progresses, bright melodies come into play to lighten the mood and even contribute to a dynamic, ever shifting groove that constantly keeps your attention pinned.

PREMIERE: Margaux Gazur - Su Phu [Smallville]

this mix is a tribute to overdub- a greek fanzine from the late 90’s  and early 00’s. 
Just before Internet was fully commercialised, the creatures of the underground scene could find it in specific comic, record and book stores and dig into the local and international experimentations of the time.  

All tracks come from artists that are briefly or more thoroughly mentioned on different issues of overdub. Christos Karras,  the music aficionado and editor in chief of the fanzine, initially had to send via post, introduction letters  to artists he admired, and receive tracks on cd or tape, months later, for a music compilation that he curated for every issue. Later on, email took over, Napster took over, and gradually overdub lost its precious meaning…Hopefully for some more than a few, independent music still matters. Special thanks to Aggelos Baltas for revealing to me this hidden gem.

"I'm an individualist." The Throbbing Gristle co-founder on extreme experimentation, difficult women and her new album, 2t2.

As long as underground culture has existed, there have been pockets of resistance—people at the fringes who challenge societal expectations and create work that pushes against societal norms. Cosey Fanni Tutti is one of them. She's a founding member of the defunct British band Throbbing Gristle, a visual artist, pornographic model, solo musician and writer.

Tutti, now 73, grew up in the English city of Hull, where she met like-minded performer Genesis P-Orridge. Together, they formed Throbbing Gristle and the collective COUM. Their activations and installations were, unequivocally, shocking. In one show, Tutti urinated on the audience as she swung naked across the stage. In another, the band performed alongside framed displays of her used menstrual pads.

Throbbing Gristle's extreme experimentations flirted with the erotic and the grotesque, pushing the limits of sound and frequency. Their outsider approach to making music—and their erasure of the boundary that separates life and art—went on to influence a generation of creatives across genres, especially in early techno.

After Throbbing Gristle disbanded, Tutti performed as synth pop duo Chris & Cosey with her husband and ex-band member, Chris Carter. Her work as a solo artist has blossomed in recent years. She published her memoir, Art Sex Music, in 2017. After turning 66, she also wrote two full-length albums and wrote another book, Re:Sisters, which explores the life and legacy of the late composer Delia Derbyshire who faced adversity as a woman in a male-dominated world, like Tutti herself.

In this Exchange with with Chloe Lula, Tutti discusses her dedication to living alternatively, expressing herself by any means possible and her forthcoming album, 2t2, composed during a time of extreme difficulty in her personal life. The underground icon also talks about mastering Mongolian throat singing and her upcoming solo art exhibition in New York, which will display the pornographic photos she took as a model in her 20s. "Summer of Solstice 3055: 

I’d just returned from a long stint working the orbital docks, preparing to settle back into the life cycle routine that was Valkor Zenith. The last thing I expected was to reconnect with three old friends from my days at the Echo House orphanage. Sora had slipped back from exile on Neoterra Prime. Rion had fled the undercity of Crysalis after a grav-bike race gone bad. And Omrin, who I hadn’t seen or heard of in more than a decade, had shown up out of nowhere as if no time had passed with a stolen data map and a proposition: we’d go find the Dream Beacon.

We’d grown up with the story. A myth, really. Some ancient alien relic buried deep in the sand sea, spoken of in hushed tones in level D bars and back-alley data centres. The promise was simple, if you could reactivate its signal with your own transmission, you’d be granted your most longed-for dreams and unimaginable wealth. No one had ever found it.

I’m still not entirely sure what made us set off and follow Omrin so blindly that summer. Maybe it was grief, maybe hope. Or just that need to move, to do anything but sit still. Each of us were adrift in our own orbit of longing and loss, and somehow, we collided again, drawn together like shards of a broken constellation.

We had left the neon haze of Valkor Zenith behind at sunset, riding the wide stretches of plasma rail to the outer edges as the city lights faded behind us. Nights were lit by twin moons and we passed the time listening to old mixes we’d recorded in our youth, our playlists humming through our comms as we hurtled across other-worldly landscapes at 200mph. In the two months that followed, we would laugh in the ruins of the Oblivion Cradle, party with rogue miners in bioluminescent fungi caverns, feel the cold rush of air as our bikes skimmed the ridges of the Halcyon Scar, be chased by Karn bike gangs through synth-storms, and save a lone settler named Joyce trapped in a dust pocket whilst traversing the Ash Spires. 

As we hurtled towards the promise of the Dream Beacon, I often wondered, was the beacon even real? And if it was, what would I even upload as my transmission? Maybe one of those old mixes we used to make. I’m sure all these questions flickered across all our minds, unspoken. But that summer, deep down, none of it really mattered. I would’ve followed those three anywhere..."

A seasonal session slipping seventy per cent seven inch slabs of seductive sounds and surface noise into a two thousand and seven hundred second mix, casually stretched and selected for yule solstice salutations. 

Recorded and originally broadcast via short wave transmission from a mobile transmitter van hooked up to the Pontop Pike transmitter on the edge of Gateshead Metropolitan Borough in the North of England.

30% infrasound and sonic artefacts discarded and accessioned into the West Gateshead Sonic Artefact Library in Bensham, Gateshead, UK.

Signals From The North - Wailing Ghosts II

This is a live recording of my friend Peter Mangalore playing records just over 10 years ago at a night we used to do called Road to Rimini in Newcastle upon Tyne. Peter was the main DJ and played the final hour after Wee DJs live slot. It was an off shoot night called Face Your Fate which took place in the Northumberland Arms a literal underground boozer - the DJ set up by day served as a hot plate that would keep mince & dumplings warm for high street shoppers and Newcastle's professional shoplifting community. It was the perfect set up for Peter. 

Peter died this weekend. He was 42.

Never got round to uploading this mix. This night was very special as it was the first time me and my mates had met Peter, we became firm friends after this and he would visit us up in the North East regularly. Pete had friends in the North East that loved him very much.

We had originally connected through mutual friends - Ali Renault and the Human Shield Record Company crew/Magic Waves crowd who we had met a year previously. 

It's an understatement to say Peter was unique. He was a true outsider, supreme raconteur and a lot of fun to be around. We became very close. 

When on form and positive, he was a supreme force for good and an amazing individual. His enthusiasm for people, his generosity, talking to animals ('Alreet myeet'), seeing the absolute wonder in the most mundane and oblique shit - a champion of the weirdo.

For the last few years Peter struggled with addictions and really poor health. At his peak though he was a mercurial force, egoless when it came to music and a generous creative talent. The loss of Peter will be felt by loads of folk especially in the North of England. He had a giant personality.

I always felt this mix summed him up perfectly, a true outsider with a immense talent and raw energy. A live mix can really put you back in a time and place, especially when you can hear the crowd through the needles, it's an emotional mix for me and a proper time capsule of emotion and feelings.

He had an incredible influence on me and introduced me and my peers and friends to so much good music - not just dance stuff. Peter saw the cracks in the reality tunnel and I owe him a great deal. Life was never dull around Peter.
