Episode 42: Kyoka

Kyoka is a supremely talented sound artist and musician who fuses her love of sound with experiments in Physics, Neuroscience and more. She was the first female solo artist on the Raster-Noton label and had access to the EMS Studio in Sweden where she was introduced to Buchla synths.

She's known for her frantic, highly articulate sounds which combine foley recordings and fragmented vocals alongside a sporadic rhythm track. She was on the bill for the Warehouse Project in Manchester, curated by Aphex Twin, and she recently collaborated with Ian from Lakker under the name 'Lena Anderson'.

"Mystic High", co-produced by singer CHIYORI and producer YAMAAN will be released on Monday, November 29th, 2021.


CHIYORI has long been active in the Tokyo hip-hop scene, to date releasing two solo albums and an album with the band Lostrains. She is currently expanding her activities as a DJ while also participating in numerous guest performances.


YAMAAN has been active in a wide range of genres such as ambient and hip-hop, most recently releasing the "幻想区域EP" in 2020. Lately, he has also been performing live using VHS tapes and CRT TVs.


CHIYORI and YAMAAN have been working together since their first collaboration "Call Me", released in 2008, but "Mystic High" marks their first full album together, with 8 tracks built upon their shared love of Memphis Rap and Ambient.


"すごい", with its fragments of G-Rap and floating synths, "水風呂" and its lyrics referencing the intoxication of hot and cold baths, and "I'm So High", with its fusion of Ghetto Tech and Deep House under a crystal-clear vocal line, all capture the mood of the album, which brings together a collection of tracks fusing a mystical vibe with rythmic variety and a pop sensibility.


The album features guest appearances from Katsuyuki Kobayashi, star of the documentary film "寛解の連続", a rapper with a poetic flair who embodies the real hood music of Hyogo Prefecture, Karavi Roushi, a member of the Hydro Brain MC's whose innovative flows and unique cutting edge approach to rap music is on full display on his recent album "清澄黒河", ITL, a beatmaker well versed in hiphop and beats from around the world, and Skinny Dolphin, a mysterious rapper who brings an ambient mood to his verses.


On remix duty, producer LSTNGT creates an emotional trance-inspired ”Sad Rave" sound, while BUSHMIND, a DJ/trackmaker who is trusted in a wide range of fields from HipHop to Techno and New Age lays down a high-energy edit mixing in elements of Rave and 90s New Age.


The artwork is created by designer Takara Ohashi, inspired by the album's fusion of G-Rap and Ambient elements. The album is out on CHIYORI and YAMAAN's own label "Jyuraku Rokuon". Physical release on CD and cassette tape, digital release on Bandcamp and streaming.

Two years and four months after "Layer Of Soul" released in December 2019, the long-awaited new 8th of Fugenn & The White Elephants, a gem that gives you the strength to live by sandwiching five albums as Fugenn & Tooson. The album "Re: Earth" is completed! !!

Appeared like a comet in the 1st "an4rm" in 2011, and released the 2nd "Prays" in 2012, which is a masterpiece in the history of electronica-electronic sound, and in the 4th album "BA BEACON" in 2013. Created through Fugenn & The White Elephants, a solo project by Shuji Saito that solidified the name of Fugenn & The White Elephants, the 6th album "Elevated Petal" released in 2018, and the 7th album "Layer Of Soul" in 2019. This work includes not only Fugenn's unrivaled and unique beat, glossy and lyrical sound, but also everything that expands the world view, and everyone is in a different dimension. Creative and mysterious expressions are developed as if leading to.

"Md" with a bewitching female vocal that plays the beginning of the album, M2 "Climate" with a sprinting 4-floor beat sparkling on the dance floor, and M3 "West Sun" with the sound of anthem echoing with vocals. M6 "East Side" and M4 "The Will Of The Stars" featuring vocalist Jessica with a career of more than 20 years can be said to be a song full of Fugenn's emotion.
The ending will be the soundtrack-like M9 "Samantabhadra" as if the beautiful sunset illuminates the world, and the Procol Harum "Blue Shadow" featuring Osaka-based unit iLU's vocal KURO.

The sound of Fugenn & The White Elephants, which has matured over 15 years, is always looking ahead and full of a unique sound world.

Invisible City continues to celebrate its 10th anniversary as a record label by reissuing the overlooked 1994 UK LP Accura - Five x Five!

The best records make you want to grab the steering wheel and feel the sunny coastal drive.  Frank Ed’s unique blend of genres on his LP “Five x Five” does exactly this by melting G-funk, smoothie Rnb and NYC Disco a la Larry Levan, a genre he coined “Street Jazz”. 

A Ghana expat inspired by the endearing levity of the sounds of Hi-life along the Gold Coast, Frank Ed fuses downtempo keys and throbbing basslines on the opener “The Vibe”. Taking turn on the sunny coast, “Groove Control” is a euphoric minimal disco gem teasing the padlocked grooves of Gwen Guthrie and the West End setting sun into a fiery Loleatta sample that sparks into a fiery vocal  “You got me burning up”. Dervish vibraphones, inspired by the Jazz-Funk renaissance, mesmerize the interlude “Ghetto Strings”. The punchy sampledelic psychedelia of conscious hip hop continue with the car sounds of “Jazz Maiden” opening with a screeching car halt, alongside MCs Cap D and Darkstorm rapping about a girl on the town, before being snapped and interjected by a female vocal chiming in“Excuse Me!” “Freestylin’” is a top down portamento G-funk glider, a nod to everything from the West Coast hip hop highway. “The Good Times'' -  a CD-hidden only cut - is the real jewel here, emblematic of Frank Eds distinctive style. Expect low slung, nasal rapping and sine wave G funk grooves paired with lyrics about baggy jeans and Kangol kits that land with the chorus: “ I walk the walk I pay the price of this hip hop rhyme.” The pacific highway drive continues with “Summer Jazz” a breezy cruiser with the line, “Just move your body and slow…Summer Jazz.” You can feel the sun and wind in your hair as the keys trill along the reverb vocals of “I Feeeel It.” 


This pressing Includes two other CD-only releases featuring the NHB remixes of “Feelin Jazzy” and “Summer Jazz.” An essential LP, lovingly remastered and adjacent to the African diaspora genre UK Street Soul and the fervent UK RnB explosion of the early 90s.
