“Days On End” serves as a sonic archive of mid-pandemic moods. Through a collection of live-recorded tracks, it captures a raw, creative burst from Solotape during a period of stripped-down production. Signature rhythm-work and gritty sound design return for this extensive collection, released in two parts.

“I was kind of burnt out on music early during the pandemic - everyone at my house was suddenly home all the time and I never had any alone time to work on it. Eventually, I ended up renting a shared rehearsal spot nearby in San Francisco. My audio interface was still at home when I first moved in there, so I didn't have a way to digitally record. I brought my tape deck instead and pressed record when things started sounding good.”

“My whole setup was pretty basic with less instruments than I usually have. There was a sort of simplicity to making stuff that I think was good for me. I was just excited to work on music again, and wasn’t obsessing over the technicalities. I didn’t have any particular plans for what I was recording, and just set the tapes aside for a while. I had forgotten most of what I had recorded by the time I returned to them months later. I didn’t know what to expect once I listened back and essentially rediscovered all of the material like it was new. The tapes felt like a physical little time capsule of an earlier period. After I realized that I liked what I had made, I dubbed the tapes to digital and made some edits to clean them up. Almost everything from the three tapes is included here.”

Despite this simplified approach (or perhaps because of it), Solotape has created a body of work that is full of excitement, joy, and playfulness, as well as frustration, catharsis, and dread. At times rambling, at others immediate and visceral, it resembles a series of vignettes, tied together through a common tonal palette and form rather than emotional valence. “Days On End” strikes a balance of raw emotion and analog textures, providing an honest snapshot into the artist's internal world.

Embark on a sonic odyssey with Nervous Operator's latest album, "Psychic Diffraction," an audacious nine-track collection where the pulse of syncopated rhythms and psychedelic synthcraft meet the ethereal realms of ambient melodies and hypnagogic dreamscapes.

Forging a path that diverges from the digitally-centered composition of his last album, "Chronostasis" released on Dreamtone in 2021, Nervous Operator, who is based in Vancouver, embraces the raw energy and imperfections of live performance. "Psychic Diffraction" has its roots in two dynamic live PA sets, which served as the creative essence for the album. The original performances were recorded, only to be reworked through a studio process that refined and enhanced the compositions without sacrificing the spontaneous spirit of the live experience. Utilizing an impressive array of hardware, including an Octatrack, Rytm (gratitude to Josh Rose aka Derivatives for lending the device), Syntakt, and the Mopho, Nervous Operator ensures each track delivers a palpable and vibrant auditory experience that is tinged with tactile warmth.

“Psychic Diffraction” is also a homage to the influence Chicago, where Nervous Operator previously lived, had on the artist’s creative process. “Much of my inspiration came from my time in Chicago and the musicians and DJs I met through various shows and parties. I greatly appreciated the freedom of exploration and melding of genres”. As a result, the album boasts an eclectic blend of industrial, electro, breakbeat, and techno. “I always aim to create small ‘worlds’ for the listener to explore sonically and to layer textures in such a way that allows the listener to discover new elements on repeated plays,” Nervous Operator reflects. "Psychic Diffraction" indeed offers a multilayered auditory odyssey that becomes richer with each listen.

Introducing Slow Blink, the latest sonic venture from acclaimed producer Michael Claus, who this time pivots to a more raw, club-centric sound. Under this new moniker, Claus unveils a 5-track EP that radiates raw, rave-inspired energy, marking a stark contrast to his typically more ambient and introspective creations. This release is a resonant journey through overdriven drum machines and subaquatic electro, meticulously crafted for the pulsating heart of the dance floor.

The EP showcases two original tracks by Slow Blink, where Claus delivers a frenetic concoction of saturated rhythms and kaleidoscopic melodies, interwoven with iridescent atmospheres that pulse with vibrant intensity. These are complemented by a special rave edit, a high-energy rendition that intensifies the originals' dynamic energy and is perfect for peak club moments.

Complementing Claus' originals, the EP features two striking remixes by Farsight and Pteron, adding an extra layer of depth to the EP. Farsight's interpretation infuses a bass-heavy rhythm, transforming the original into a breakbeat-driven powerhouse, enriched with a new dimension of funk and bounce. The medium is the message! Vinyl has always been our preferred medium for releasing music and without this tactile form of presentation, Samurai Music would not continue in its current form. Vinyl is the ultimate personification of what the label wishes to represent. Music always comes first, but the vinyl artefact is king for us.

Hyaku is the 100th Vinyl release on the Samurai Music label. Through the many twists and turns of the industry in our almost 17 years of existence, the Samurai Music vinyl releases have maintained their aspiration for quality, unique design that stands the test of time. Praise and thanks always to our long time designer Ryan Quinlivan and the many pressing plants we have worked with over the course of our labels lifespan.

For his sixth 96 Back LP, Evan Majumdar-Swift found himself writing “a long form eulogy” to his years living in Manchester while preparing for an imminent move to London. Initially intended as a series of technical exercises, which saw the artist radically stripping back his established production setup, over the last two years tender, exit gradually took on the form of an emotional landscape, mapped in transit between two cities. “The overarching concept of the record is cycles, recognising them, loving them, and tearing yourself away from them,” he says. Heard together, the project takes on the pace and cadence of a passionate conversation with a loved one.

Back with the second instalment of the 5th Birthday series – INTL.PDCOMP003 features both returning artists and some new faces at the dome, with a huge rage of sounds from across the globe. 

Christian Coiffure and Elsa get things going, both returning to the label and submerging us with their downtempo explorations before we welcome Heling and Knopha – both integral heads in the Chinese club and radio scene with some beautiful, headsy additions to the catalogue. Continuing to explore the chug zone, ophélie joins the PD fam with a moody, introspective take before we get hit with the more up front contributions from pq and newcomer EYRA. 

Picking up the pace, Design Default’s “Million Knives” is certified to bring a dance floor moment while Sha Ru, Odd Shy Guy and Tano all provide their excursions into bass in that 140-150bpm space a with deep half time cut from our fave NY duo, a heavy bass bin rattler direct from Italy and signature playful, percussive piece from Tano. Fels completes the line up with a cinematic return to 100bpm.

After starting with a focus of pushing local artists 5 years ago, we feel so blessed we’ve been able to make connections with so many incredible artists from all corners of the planet as we’ve grown over the years.

Drawn from live performances in San Francisco and Sacramento between 2022 and 2023, Michael Claus’ latest 4-track EP distills the energy, experimentation and atmosphere of those sets into a focused studio release. Loops, textures, and rhythmic sketches originally crafted for the dance floor and shaped in real time by crowd energy, space, and intuition have been reshaped into four fully realized tracks—each one carrying traces of the environments and moments that first gave them life.

From the high-velocity percussion and drive of “Gradient Dreams” to the low slung and staggered swing of “Plastic Soul,” Claus weaves together a palette of saturated percussion, hazy atmospheres and pixelated melodies. “AI Instinct” locks into a hypnotic and machine-link churn of syncopated 909s and a minimalist 303, while “Invisible Beach” closes things out with a groovy melody that feels half dream, half machine. There’s a distinctly cybernetic mood running throughout—neon-tinted and lo-fi, like glimpses of a decaying city’s sprawl refracted through smoke and chrome.

Influenced by the retro-futurist visions of authors like William Gibson, Claus taps into a sound both worn and futuristic, pulsing with motion yet heavy with atmosphere. The result is a collection that feels lived-in and cinematic. Whether heard in a club or in solitude, the EP offers a snapshot of Claus’ creative loop between performance and production, memory and reinvention.

UPDATE on our upcoming release pre-order, “Gradient Dreams” EP.

We have decided to donate all proceeds of this release to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, whose mission it is to supply medical aid, treatment, food, water, and necessities to families affected by the ongoing crisis. They also focus on rebuilding healthcare facilities, and funding trauma counseling and mental health services to foster healing in the community.

They say what is happening in Gaza is a catastrophe, among the worst they have ever seen. It’s more painful, they say, because it’s man-made, caused by Israel cutting off all food, fuel, medicine and other supplies to the territory nearly 11 weeks ago.

The world’s top authority on food crises last week warned of famine unless the blockade ends. Almost the entire population of around 2.3 million is acutely malnourished, and one in five Palestinians are on the brink of starvation, it said.” (from PBS)
