DIDYMO w/ Laurel | Root Radio 21/04/2022

I got to know Laurel (@silver-side-pony) via the growing bin website. Always loved their picks from the bin and so I got curious. Then I heard one of Laurels mixes and was sold. I am superhappy to share this almost 4 hour long sandwich with you... now handing over the keyboard. 
"Laurel hails from the rural North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) of Aotearoa, New Zealand. They enjoyed a few years observing Pōneke (Wellington)’s rambunctious and delightfully strange music scene at venues like Puppies and the revered Camp a Low Hum, before moving to Berlin.
This mix is the result of many quiet lockdown nights trawling bandcamp, deep dives into the (Growing) Bin, and excavating their record collection. Winding in and out of new music and old gems over 3.5 hours, the mix reflects their unease and excitement of heading back to parties after a long break. Laurel made sure to include some old well-trodden favourites, doing a big middle finger to the pressure to play new and “rare” tracks at every single outing.

Laurel and Thom are two of our favourite Berlin DJs, both on their own and as a unit. Very few people approach things with as much intention and creativity as these two. When we asked them to open the last Gelee Royale, we expected something really nice. What we ended up with was so much more: a beautiful, meandering, idiosyncratic journey, that bubbles up here and there, never reaching a peak, incredibly patient and understated. We have so much love for these two and this excerpt from their set.

Laurel (@silver-side-pony) is up for the first hour, setting the right tone for late-summer relaxation to let whip on your yoga mats and leave you behind with a big big smile on your cheeks. Super fun mix for the super good mood.

Hip Therapy #19 w/ Laurel and Kax Mahl

The moon waxes into shiny illumination under Gemini tonight and @silver-side-pony has mixed up an hour of reflective and radiant ambient, perfectly facilitating ritual and release. “In a year that feels suspended in motion (not so much surreal as hyper-real), notifications on Bandcamp Friday have become a small joy.” True to that sentiment and full of gorgeous musical morsels from friends of theirs, this mix oozes warmth, stoking the flames of collective inspiration, community and connectivity.
