Originally released as part of the Piano & Coffee label’s ‘Realismo Mágico’ compilation in 2021, this engaging new recording of this dark, brooding, rhythmical piece was recorded on a Blüthner grand piano at Ayriel Studios, nestled high up in the stunning, isolated landscape of the North York Moors, one of the UK’s most treasured National Parks.

Saturnine (Solo Piano)

This medieval melody, popularised predominantly in the sixteenth century, is perhaps most well-known because of the version attributed to the German composer Michael Praetorius. 

In fact, the title is often shortened to 'Quempas', a generic term for Christmas songs in a German caroling tradition. 

Numerous translations exist from the original Latin text, with the English title often a variation on 'He Whom The Shepherds Praised', although a later translation by Imogen Holst with an arrangement by John Rutter translates the title as 'Shepherds Left Their Flocks A-Straying'.

I guess it's about shepherds. 

Many years since I released my version of 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel', I felt it was time for a new Christmas tune.

Compline is a monastic practice where monks gather to reflect & mark the completion of the working day.

There's no religious significance as such for me, but the concept of reflecting on the day's events right at it's very end, is an interesting and fascinating idea. Feel free to listen to this song in this way, and maybe with headphones.

This long-form piece, in which impressionist piano intertwines with sympathetic field recordings and found sounds, makes reference to and is influenced by an experience I had at the Suffolk coast in late-February 2019.

The UK was experiencing especially unseasonably calm and warm weather, and on an early-morning visit to the beach, I encountered a set of circumstances so magical, I had to bring them to life in a musical way.

The unique atmospheric conditions created a panorama, which, combined with the other-worldly landscape of Shingle Street, is hard to convey how special and beautiful it was. I have never seen the sea so still, with barely a lap at the shore. Every sound: the gaps between the shingle filled by the gently-gurgling, placid sea; hordes of gulls, terns - possibly a gannet - grazing on Orford Ness, their squawks echoing shrilly across the glass-still inlet; and the faint tolling of the bell buoy, a mile out to sea, carried across on the gentle breeze.
