Futureboogie Recordings is calling time after ten years with a 20-track compilation that sums up the sound of the lovingly curated Bristol label. From throbbing arps and noirish guitar twangs to errant analogue blips and ceaseless, rolling grooves, it’s a different sound to what you might have heard five years back on the Summer Riot IV compilation, and certainly a long way from the early days. Consider Futureboogie 10² an ode to evolution as much as a toast to all the great tracks and the family of artists that have passed through the wide-reaching Futureboogie sphere since before the label was even a sparkle in the disco ball.
 
Originally founded by Dave Harvey and Steve Nickolls, the roots of Futureboogie lie in an intimate Bristol party called Seen. Started in 2002, this open-hearted session invited the likes of Metro Area, Attica Blues, Carl Craig, Maurice Fulton, Moodymann and Gilles Peterson – based on that heavyweight list, you can see the foundations were laid for what was to come. Futureboogie evolved off the back of these parties as a many-limbed operation – an artist management and booking agency as much as a club night, with Harvey and Nickolls consolidating the sound as DJs around Bristol and beyond. The progression to a record label was a logical one.
 
When Futureboogie Recordings launched in 2011 with Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Father Father’, it represented an extended circle of friends close to the label from Bristol’s deep pool of talent and beyond – amongst them Eats Everything, Waifs & Strays, PBR Streetgang, Behling & Simpson and Crazy P. The reach of the label grew in tandem with its reputation, not to mention the endeavours of the team in other areas of the music game. The Boogiefuturo label became a vital entity on its own terms, carrying a lauded DJ Nature remix of Typesun which encapsulates two distinct generations of Bristolian house music at its best. DJ Nature, who cut his teeth as DJ Milo in the Wild Bunch days, has gone on to become a regular feature on Futureboogie, helping define its soulful, adventurous spirit.

A bowl of the juiciest looking fruit sat in the middle of the table, its contents inviting her to take a bite. It was a case of look but don't touch, though it challenged every inch of her not to reach out and grab a piece. A succulent bunch of grapes sat beside a vibrant pile of strawberries and an abundance of ripe pears, plums and bananas, how could she possibly resist? One bite wouldn't hurt anyone...

Marco Passarani's discography stretches back over nearly three decades including long players on well-respected imprints like Peacefrog, Running Back and Offen Music. For his next release, which marks his sixth LP, he heads over to Aus to make his debut with The Wildlife Of The Quieter Ones. Once again flexing his dexterity at moving between genres and styles, the 16 tracks showcase his timeless sound: a cocktail of glimmering electro, techno, house and IDM.

Since 2014, Public Release has been enlisting the raw, trademark groove of Richard Sen on a variety of now- renowned remixes. Label boss Eug has cited him in numerous interviews as being one of his all-time favourite producers, so it was inevitable that a solo EP would eventually materialize. That time has finally come, and in the Spring of 2022, the UK legend drops his solo EP “My Definition of Funk” on Public Release.

These three raw, gritty, hard-hitting, peak-time tracks are quintessential Richard Sen, combining the energy and influences of post-punk, breaks, and house in one sturdy sonic package.

Ryan Berkeley returns with a brand new release, "The Arp Ascending EP" in his signature stripped back and raw house style. 6 tracks that all started out as live jams and reworked into a collection of songs that flow through floating leads, deep bass, dubbed out influences and subtle vocals. Equal parts deep early morning energy and soundscape.

'Goin' Deep opens the EP with a Chicago infused house groove and soaring analogue leads. Keeping the energy at 100%, track 2 'Wise Groove' is a minimal roller with heavy low end, one for the smoke filled rooms and early morning enthusiasts.

'La Niña' boils down to vast soundscapes, a slow number showcasing Berkeley's dynamic side, reminiscent of some of his earlier works.
'The Arp Ascending', the releases namesake song starts with heavy drums and epic arpeggiated synths, underneath a rolling bass-line that keeps things moving, all the way up and up, ending in an epic climax.

The EP dives down again into 'She Sells Sea Shells', a lush downtempo number with layers of blips and bloops weaving through strings and 808's. Rounding out the EP is the dubbed out finisher, 'Polish & Protect' with hypnotic stabs and FM leads, clocking in at an appropriate 4 minutes 20 seconds.

Following the explorations of "Adventures", the journey continues. "Adventures II" invites four sonic explorers to reinterpret and rediscover the original tracks by Cie - translating them into new forms and revealing hidden layers along the way.

Andrey Sirotkin opens the next chapter with his reconstruction of "Reichenstein". Deep grooves and infectious acid lines rise above a solid foundation of bass, creating a space that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. With his unmistakable dub techno touch, Georg Neufeld returns to "Der Turm", propelling it forward with a hypnotic pulse. His remix is immersive and gripping - an energetic spiral with no easy escape. From here, the path leads to the next stop: "Stenzelberg", where Granlab ignites percussive sparks that echo through winding canyons. Luminous stabs merge with flowing strings and a powerful bassline, offering surprises behind every turn of this mystic trail. Finally, Chris Baumann picks up the thread and guides us deep into the heart of "Reichenstein" once again. His version is fast, intense, and relentless - a final descent into introspective techno with no return until the morning light.

ECLECTICS RELEASE OCIO DE HOY EP BY CANEBRAKE 

Straddling styles and formats like a Balearic Colossus, Eclectics come correct once again. With ‘Ocio de Hoy’ by Canebrake, you get both a digital and vinyl release of a pitch-perfect EP that will worm its way into your ears and earn a place in your heart. 

Two searing originals leading the charge while two carefully crafted remixes cover the ground left unchartered is fast becoming the M.O. for the Bournemouth-based Balearic label. 
This EP, from Canebrake Sam Bruce (AKA Mallorquin), is no exception.  

“Borne Upriver” opens proceedings with bursts of bass tentatively testing the water. Once we’re ready to dive in and go with the flow, we’re rewarded with guitar licks full of crisp lines and delay that repays again and again as the pedal shows its mettle. 
If you need a steer as you drift downstream, think of the Idjut Boys jamming with Pete Shelley. But with all the rough lines delicately rubbed out. 

Eclectics mainstay James Bright throws caution to the wind as he finds a new tributary and sails upstream powered by disco drums and piercing acid lines. Snatches of guitar and cleverly handled melody mutations let us know that it’s the same vessel, but taken in a new, exciting direction.  

The second original, “Contento de Saber”, puts us on a firmer footing as the bass goes deep to take root while an 808 snare leads the way to the dancefloor. It combines classic sounds and elemental building blocks, to create something new, yet familiar. Searing synths, persuasive percussion and laid-back guitarist side-by-side, never overwhelming, complementing rather than competing. It is, to use the parlance of the age, an absolute banger.     

Another friend of the label, Joe Morris, takes up remix duties on “Contento…” and conjures up the kind of exotic, intricately patterned musical topography that has become his fingerprint - a sonic seal of quality. 

If you’re looking for something to leave you rocking and reeling between the dark and the dawn, this EP has it all - music for the day and the night, the sun and the shade, the body and the soul.
