Re-recorded the set I played at Festivus because I had heaps of fun playing it and I thought i'd share for those people who couldn't make it. The set was early afternoon in the middle of the bush. Love playing outdoors!!
Included are some of my favourite tracks at the moment and the set gave me a chance to move into territory I don't often get to play in my sets. Tunes and remixes by people like Max Cooper, D-Nox &amp; Beckers, Blinky, Child, Subfractal, Quivver, Guy J and many more. Some tasty progressive and melodic techno through to some tougher bush sounding techno and back to progressive to lead into Dave Juric.

"Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it". - Salvador Dali 

After fluffing around, getting caught up in my own indecisiveness on what sort of mix to make and second guessing myself continuously in the pursuit of some level of perfection, I decided to cut the crap and just get a bunch of tunes I liked and put them into a mix with my favourite weekend of the year in mind (RSF). 

These are tunes that have inspired me in some way or stuck in my mind whilst i've been living in a remote indigenous community in NT, as far away from clubs, events and festivals that i've ever been. There are some older tunes that hold sentimental value and some brand spankin' new tunes, covering the melodic side of techno with a bunch of the usual suspects plus a few new faces. 

Going against the grain of slower BPMs, this mix has pretty melodies with a decent kick and hints of rave to suit dusty dancefloor boogying, desk rave outbursts, big fish little fish cardboard box driving sessions, kitchen twerking, gym workout shimmying and wherever else you wanna bust a move.

Simon Murphy - Have No Fear - Sept '13

This is a recording of the set I played to reopen the Hydra Stage on Saturday @ Earthcore's 20th Anniversary. Unfortunately I didn't have my recorder on me so I recorded this at home in the order I played them at the festival. 

Kicking off things at midday I wanted to give the crowd some dusty dancefloor flavoured techno for breakfast to help them wake up. There are a bunch of new tunes mixed in with a bunch of my favourite dancefloor stomping tracks from years gone by. Purists be warned, this contains heavy doses of doof. 

I took the photo whilst I was playing, if anyone in the photo wants me to take it down, please let me know :-)

Simon Murphy - Hydra Stage @ EC - Nov '13

Without a doubt, James Zabiela has had as much influence on my music as anyone.

Disenchanted by the tech house wave that swept across the scene about 5 years ago I sought new inspiration. Through his sets that fused music that not only crossed, but also defied genres, I found the inspiration I needed. JZ opened my eyes to a whole new world of music to explore. I immersed myself in electronica, returned to my techno roots and have ended up where I am now.

With Darkbeat putting on a Born Electric showcase and James Zabiela headlining, this set was put together to pay my respects to the foundation that was laid when listening to those sets that changed my whole perspective on music. This is the music I love. 

There are a few nods to those directly inspired by JZ and my musical journey back then e.g. Trifonic, Lusine, Babicz etc, plus some new tunes by some of my recent favourites e.g. Avatism, Recondite etc. I guess if it needs to be pigeon-holed it's electronica/techno but that's irrelevant.

On the deep house and tech house tip, this mix covers tunes I don't often get to play (hence the tongue in cheek title). This gave me a chance to experiment and offer up my take on the genres (including a few cheeky re-edits that I put together).

Recorded straight from the mixer @ Prognosis at Loop Bar 19th April '14.

Versus/B2B sets can often be booked for the wrong reasons e.g. cram more DJs on the bill to get more puppets to push the brand. When they are booked for the right reasons though, there can be some awesome results. I specifically booked Miza to play a versus set with me at Prognosis as I had a feeling it'd be epic. Late-ish set too so no holding back tune wise. This is the result...

The tunes cover some new stuff with a bunch of classics that inspired both myself and Miza as punters and DJs. Techno, minimal and everything in between. Some outdoor organic flavours, some warehouse sounds and some wonky bits thrown in for good measure. One of the most fun sets I've played.

Note: Excuse a couple of the volume variations. Yet again the inner city living movement forces clubs to jump through hoops and drop the volume at any point in time the scumbags complain.

P.s. For any highly observant audiophiles, yes the recording has one channel duplicated as the right input failed miserably. A compromise on stereo quality but a listenable result none the less.

Simon Murphy vs Alex David - Live @ Prognosis - Aug '14

Heading back to Hydra after laying down some techno in 2013, I was given a solid slot between Zenon-esque prog/psy local legends Daisycutter and Azrin. The place was going bananas.

It's rare that I play tunes this hard these days but it's always fun to whip out some heavy audio artillery for the dusty dancefloor faithful. The set fuses my tastes in techno and psychedelia with the phat twisted beats that were being dealt by those around me. When in Rome...

I had an absolute ball playing these tunes to such an amazingly energetic crowd on a thumping system. Mad love to all those who contributed - see you next year!!

Rainbow Serpent Festival 2015 - Market Stage - 24th January 2015 - 9:30-11am

Such an amazing feeling looking down upon a sea of smiling faces on the hallowed Market Stage dance floor. 

This was my contribution to the madness on Saturday morning. Playing after Azrin whose Zenon-esque prog-psy shenanigans saw the last of the night time doofers catching the early rays of sunshine. With Darius Bassiray due up after me playing slower techno and house, I started fairly tough and brought the pace down into a mid morning chug. Some old, some new, lots of bottom end... breakfast techno! 

One of the most amazing experiences of my life and I thank everyone who contributed to the opportunity and to everyone who rocked out on the dance floor. You couldn't wipe the smile from my face all weekend!

Simon Murphy - Rainbow Serpent '15 - Market Stage

Recording straight from the mixer of my set @ Technosis - the inaugural techno takeover of Prognosis.

I always play a healthy dose of techno at Prognosis but under the Technosis banner, I didn't hold back. The tunes are inspired by the old school sensibilities of techno days gone by with a new school touch. 

Lots of loopy techno, some warehouse flavours and even a nod to a favourite classic in Dave Clarke's Red 2 (though the recording makes it sound like the kick is doubling for some reason). 

I always relish the chance to play sets like this so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Leave a comment and let me know :-)

P.s. There also appears to be a discrepancy between the channel volumes and the recording from the mixer, hopefully this doesn't distract too much.

This was a peak time set in which I got to play a bunch of my favourite tunes from what I would consider some of the best progressive and techno producers around. A healthy dose of progressive sounds full of lush melodies, driving basslines and laced with outdoorsy techno, this set was heaps of fun to play and was well received by the Prognosis faithful. This was my first foray into the world of psychadelia with a healthy dose of progressive and psy influenced tunes. Recorded straight from the mixer at Melbourne's Unstable Sounds, this was heaps of fun to play.

The set was after a psy trance set so starts off with rolling basslines and moves through to phat melodic progressive trance. Artists include Ace Ventura, Ritmo, Interactive Noise, Captain Hook, Vaishayas, Neelix, Day Din and a bunch more.

As I said, this is a lot tougher than I have played in the past but it was a great opportunity to play the sounds that I often head bush to hear.

Simon Murphy - AU Underground Radio - Aug '15

With the festival season fast approaching, I have been HANGING to play another set like this for a while. August's Unstable Sounds gave me the perfect opportunity to bust out some of the tunes I've been saving for such an occasion. 

Playing right before Melbourne's own Punkz on Junk, this set is the kind of tougher techno and progressive I love hearing and playing out in the bush. Rolling basslines and melodic mayhem a'plenty.

Some background...

A couple of years back I recorded a mix called 'Have no Fear'. The title came from a Dali quote referring to the pursuit of perfection. A reminder as such that we are often our own biggest critic. Recorded at a time when there was a lot going on in my life, I wanted to remind myself what inspired me musically and I still love that mix to this day.

This mix wasn't intended as a Part 2 to that mix but it has turned out that way as I have been reminded of that process at each step. 

Much like 'Have no Fear', 'Dusty Souls' is a collection of tunes that have captured my attention and imagination, recorded to share with those who care to listen.

As my second time being invited to play on the hallowed Market Stage, I was tasked with the transition between the night time prog psy and the day time prog house session. Playing after local legend Azrin (@unstablesounds) and before the awesome Kase Kochen (@k-se-kochen) I had the chance to give it a nudge, seizing the opportunity to flex the epic sound system. This set contains chunky breakfast time techno with rolling bass lines, enchanting melodies and a touch of psychedelia for good measure... 

Thank you to all of the beautiful souls and deadset legends who got up early (or stayed up late) to hear my set this year. The vibe was amazing and I cannot thank you enough. I'm sure the smile on my face showed just how much fun I was having!! 

For those who weren't there, picture a brightly coloured stage, a sound system tuned to make your knees go weak, a dusty dance floor with sunshine warming the day through the trees, and a sea of smiling faces getting their stomp on <3 x

It was an honour, a dream and so much fun to play - I had the time of my life!! :-)

This set was recorded straight from the mixer @ Loop bar for my set at Prognosis' first birthday celebration in December.

This set was at 2am in between the two headliners, PQM and Jed. The set is predominantly progressive house/melodic techno and has some of my favourite tunes from recent times in it.

I always try and play some tunes by local talent and both Kultrun and Jamie Stevens provide a couple of monster tunes which sounded amazing on the night.

I did a quick re-record of the set I played at Colour of Sound's Aztec Edition the day after the event. Subsequently forgot to upload it and just remembered today.

After attending Esoteric last year and laying down some tunes on the Snake Pit stage, I couldn't wait to get back to the magical dusty dance floor. It's such an incredible festival with a killer vibe and mindblowing decor and visuals. 

I played alongside a stacked lineup of local legends on the thumping Bush Techno Stage on the Saturday night. Loads of chunky proggy rolling techno shenanigans plus a bootleg I made specifically to open this set.

As the days grow longer and warmer, a new life is breathed into all those who have hibernated away from the cold during the winter months. A sunny afternoon makes the mind wander to a place somewhere over the rainbow. Somewhere with dusty dancefloors and times spent escaping from the world and getting ones boogie on with other like minded souls..... well surely that's not just me?! ;-)

This mix was recorded to accompany my submission for Rainbow Serpent and as a promo to be given out at the October edition of Instinct in Melbourne. Although my set was quite different on the night, I put this together to try and capture my excitement at the prospect of the festivals and parties coming up over the next few months.

This mix isn't made to please the techno or progressive purists, it's just a bunch of tougher tunes that i've liked over the past 12 months and a few new ones. Dusty dancefloor shenanigans type tunes. I hope you like it :-)

This is my second appearance on Deanna's show and covers a similar deep melodic techno, with somewhat melancholy undertones, that I included on my first mix. This mix is a little deeper and darker in points but is accompanied by some lush melodies and big warm pads.

Simon Murphy - Emotions on Innervisions Radio - October '12

Recorded as my contribution to the HUGE Innervisions Radio 3rd Birthday celebration and aired on 1st May (and again on 4th May), this mix covers similar musical territory to my previous two mixes for Deanna Avra's show Emotions on Innervisions Radio. 

The mix is loaded with tunes from the melodic end of the techno spectrum combined with healthy doses of melancholic electronica and glitchy soundscapes.
