The podcast series "Up from the Rubble", tells the story of my father's childhood in Nazi Germany, his survival during the carpet bombing of Berlin, living through the Russian invasion of the German capital & the Berlin blockade by Stalin. It then charts his immigration to Australia. I composed & recorded the emotive soundtrack using piano (which I played) & a string quartet. This piece of music is played at the conclusion of dad's life up 'till his arrival back in Australia in 1963. What my father has packed into those nearly 60 years since has been incredible, so he's definitely lived life to the fullest.

That's right, there's a day all about the history and love for pianos. This day takes place on the 88th day of the year because this is the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated.

In 2017, ECU launched Piano Day Live Performances in Europe under the Les Charades Électroniques program, and in 2020 and 2021 it had a successful livestream program on WECU. ECU continues to support resident artists as well as international artists from many countries for this 7th edition, the second with a physical and digital release. Crossing genres, paths, and people not only brings people, communities and landscapes to life, but it also prompts personal and moral reflections, and musical expressions.

Brooklyn-based pianist Eva Novoa delivers a masterfully executed trio album of melodic themes replete with touches of swing, grooves and exquisite electronic landscapes. Novoa’s articulated playing flows with plenty of room gifting the band full freedom of improvisation. 

On the track ‘Rocket Man’ you can hear the possibilities of the traditional jazz trio format as it projects into the future, combining the acoustic beauty of the piano with the electronic tapestry of modular synthesizer. The group nimbly celebrates the tradition of jazz while positing that legacy against the backdrop of contemporary culture.

This is the second album on 577 Records for the Spanish pianist Novoa. It will be available on vinyl, digitally and as a CD on March 1st, 2024, and will be followed by a planned second volume.

I started off learning piano at around 6 years old, but only realised my ear for music when I could pick out melodies I heard on the radio & from then on I started writing my own music & playing long into the night, to the point where my parents told me to stop so they could go to sleep!
In my teenage years I joined bands & learnt basically on the fly how to work as a group. Once I realised that keyboards were not as portable & able to be played on beaches / around campfires, I taught myself guitar. By adding drums, harmonica & bass to my arsenal, the stage was set for a fully working band to record in my garage. Since setting up my home studio, I love recording a tune each week & especially love collaborating with all the extremely talented musicians on soundcloud. I'm a full time musician, with many different hats in the music community. Including songwriter, composer, live musician & blog writer.
