Welcome to our latest track 'Sorrow' by Matt Baker, John Styles & Megan McCarthy, which is Variation 7 of the new  "Imaginations & Collaborations' SoundCloud Community Challenge. Unfortunately, during our collaboration, our submission was postponed until now, as we decided to dedicate this track to Matt's father first: please read Matt's description below
This track is an original piano composition from Megan originally entitled 'Sadness', which John & I were working on as part of the new'Imaginations & Collaborations' project with Megan.


Matt's description:

This track is an original piano composition from Megan entitled 'Sadness', which John & I were working on as a collaboration project with Megan.

Unfortunately, during our writing I received terrible news that my father was unwell, which deeply affected me, as he has only just recovered from another illness. I was so very sorry to learn of his illness and felt so terribly helpless as I just wanted to reach out and heal him. Working on this helped me to cope and I realised that my feelings had turned to 'Sorrow'.

Sorrow is an emotion, feeling, or sentiment. Sorrow 'is more "intense" than sadness...it implies a long term state'. At the same time 'sorrow' is not necessarily unhappiness, but perhaps a feeling that suggests a degree of resignation...

'In terms of attitude, sorrow can be said to be half way between sadness (accepting) and distress (not accepting)

I spoke to my friends about this and was very honoured that they felt this track could be dedicated to my father, to wish him strength and a speedy recovery.

Dream Myself Awake

2013 was a year with many highlights, but also a year full of challenges - more than a fair share perhaps. At the end of the year I look forward to 2014 with hope for a better year for all of us.

This piece started as an improvisation on the morning of 31/12/2013. Some ideas emerged which I have tried to develop into a composition which expresses that hope. 

My thanks to all who have enjoyed and shared my music this past year, and best wishes to you all for the year ahead x

Every note of this came from a really real instrument.  Mainly my guitarviol and a nylon string guitar.  It's a funny form.

MACRIMA - No. 7 Magnolie

Life is full of lessons, if you can see them? Sometimes, things that present themselves as problems, have ended up being my greatest learning lessons. Hence the name of this piece. Often when improvising on the piano, I am thinking of something that has happened to me during that day or week & that seems to influence the outcome of the musical piece. Don't ask me to explain why, because I can't! It's just one of life's mysteries, but a happy one in my case. When music starts flowing, it's like a tap that can't be turned off. I hope this gives you inspiration to see the good in some of the crises you may be going through?

I started off learning piano at around 6 years old, but only realised my ear for music when I could pick out melodies I heard on the radio & from then on I started writing my own music & playing long into the night, to the point where my parents told me to stop so they could go to sleep!
In my teenage years I joined bands & learnt basically on the fly how to work as a group. Once I realised that keyboards were not as portable & able to be played on beaches / around campfires, I taught myself guitar. By adding drums, harmonica & bass to my arsenal, the stage was set for a fully working band to record in my garage. Since setting up my home studio, I love recording a tune each week & especially love collaborating with all the extremely talented musicians on soundcloud. I'm a full time musician, with many different hats in the music community. Including songwriter, composer, live musician & blog writer.
