Rory is no stranger to the big beat sound having published 2 books on the subject (The Little Big Beat Book & The Story of Big Beat). Project Happiness is a prime example of his masterful use of huge crunchy drums, righteous bass lines and looping vocals to deliver on the dance floor. Right Place Right time starts with scratchy vinyl guitar loops and wobbly bass but quickly evolves into a booming party starter. Gangsta-ish takes a second look at the same tempo with funky bass, crashing drums and just enough 303 acid and dj scratching to really get the floor going. 90's Flashback sees Rory team up with Countertop hero to create a nostalgic romp into the golden age of breaks and big beat. Finally We throw it across the pond with a remix from LA based friend of the funk, Qdup who ups the tempo a bit to deliver nothing less then an instant breakbeat classic. Punchy drums and robot vocals finds a build that rises to an onslaught of distorted 808's and a sultry female vocals topped with a lead synth worthy of parliament themselves. Together these 4 tracks should not be missed and will find itself at home in any party DJs collection.

If I had it to do over, THIS is the set I would've played at BOC 2012. I opened the main room at 6AM, or so I thought-- I ended up playing to an empty room til 6:30, not realizing they had not opened the gates yet. When someone let me know what was up, I got out all different CDs and held back the throttle until the room started to fill up, but never really got into a good rhythm before the next DJ cut me off at 7am sharp. I've played sets that were far better, but you know, it's never those ones that get recorded. Instead, of course, the ones that end up getting recorded are not necessarily the ones you want to become part of your sonic legacy. So there it is, on the Space Cowboys podcast in all its janky glory.

Consider this set of breakbeat slammers to be closer to the intent of what my set at BOC might have been, had the stars aligned differently (and also gave me 15 extra minutes).
