This is the beginning of a new series of mixes and live events I’m calling CHPTR – a space for storytelling through sound.

Each mix will explore a different emotional arc, unfolding like a narrative across genres, tempos, and textures. Some will be recorded live in the studio, others captured live at CHPTR events. They’re connected by a shared intention: to take you on a journey.

Each set is crafted to unfold like a narrative – rich in texture, emotional depth, and movement. Not just a collection of tunes, but a journey with intention behind every transition, shift, and silence.

CHPTR 001 is, in many ways, a psychedelic selection – not in the hippy sense, but in how it gently alters perception over time. It starts slow, ambient, and introspective, gradually evolving through hypnotic grooves, off-kilter house, breakbeats, and late-night techno. It’s cinematic, immersive, and designed to be experienced as a whole.

Featuring music by Mark Barrott, Jose Solano, Dizharmonia, LTJ, Josh Wink (Adana Twins Remix – Simon’s VIP Edit), Left/Right, BRONSON, and unreleased edits and reconstructions of my own.

I’ve been sitting on this way too long. In 2024, I attended Sunsets and Shadows @sunsets-shadows and met so many people who are now my Reno family. Fast forward to 2025 summer and I was asked to play the first sunrise. The assignment: “deep dark and groovy” is the sound of the event. But 6am. So I took that as a challenge to create a journey of something that has two layers of deep dark and groovy, and light and optimism. This is one of my favorite sets I’ve done and I hope you enjoy it too!

A peak-time one-hour set recorded live at the Burning Man Denver Decompression event (2025), performed as Elite Force aka Simon Shackleton.

This mix has a raw intensity to it – genre-crossing with driving basslines, twisted grooves, and cinematic edges – designed for full throttle lift-off. 

It was such a fun night to be a part of. I've been part of the extended Burning Man community for over 15 years now and it's always an honour to share what I do with so many beautiful, creative souls.

Today we are super excited to release DJ Dan's (inStereo Recordings, Apt Ent, Los Angeles) epic 2+ hour fast and funky house set from the dramatic Tropical 27-Year Anniversary Hot Tub Oasis Retreat September 28, 2025!

We've had Dan play before, both at Tropical Oasis Retreat back in 2016, and at Tropical Boat party in 2018.  So this return is an appearance long overdue.

This is the best mixed set I (Ben Annand) heard in 2025, as well as my favorite DJ Dan set.
This year I got to know Dan quite a bit better as we were  festival roommates in Wisconsin (July), Alaska (Sept) and finally in California at this Tropical Event.  He's a super funny and humble guy, a legend for a reason. 

As the more humble headliners often do, Dan asked about how to play at this particular event.  I delivered what I know to be the best  news you can give to the dj - Our crowd is super open, play however you want, feel free to take risks and be adventurous in a long set.

That's exactly what you get here - Funky AF, a bit faster than normal due to where Dan was handed off, lots of 80s and 90s influences and fun flashbacks, artfully and perfectly mixed.

If there is ever a museum created for DJ mixes, this one should go in it.

What an amazing party Off the Grid Campout 2025 was!  I think my Sunday evening set there was my best flow of the year <3

My set started a bit weird as I lost a lot of the crowd right away, without a style change or much reason.   Sometimes people see a DJ changeover as a good break time so I did not take it personally though it's still not the direction we like to see things go lol.

Fortunately I stuck to my game plan musically and didn't go experimental to try to crowd please.  I hear about how DJs should be flexible and adapt to the crowd but that can go either way tbh.  It also takes strength to stick to your concept instead of overthinking it.

21 or so minutes in, from about when the super funky bassline from Huxley's track - "Monie," kicked in, I had the dance floor back. About 10 minutes later I mixed smoothly into Skiziz's remix of Deee Lite's Call Me. 'Why don't you get call waiting or something' - that dated reference always cracks me up. Playing either a remix or a familiar track is a rarity for me, but it worked of course.  

I was super happy with the flow all around, and especially from the moments described above,  to the end of my set here.  The dance floor responded too -  fully locked in and ultimately doubling from when I first took over. 

After my set, with my deck duties done, I finally got to let loose!  I popped about the party having way too much fun til 5am when it was time to go.

Huge thank you to Mikey Made, Jovie, and the OTG team for a spectacular experience, to Jiramanat, Zach and ChinoSound for dialing audio in just right as usual, and to Conscious United to welcoming this Oregon orphan into their amazing camp! <3

In what was a unique experiment in combining climbing and dancing like lunatics, some good friends of mine who own The Climbing Hangar in Liverpool ( http://www.theclimbinghangar.com/ ) decided to throw a party. 

And some party it was!

A Funktion One big enough to fell small children (and medium-sized adults) was installed, a pirate ship was video-mapped by the excellent Meat Cassette video crew from Manchester, a bunch of fit & fly reprobates turned up and I played for 4 1/2 hours or more ...

Elite Force Live @ Boulder Breaks, Liverpool, 22 09-12

This is a partial recording of an amazing morning I had in Vegas this summer at my good friend Andrea's birthday bash. A whole bunch of reprobates from legendary West Coast crews (Space Cowboys, Distrikt, The Nutz) took over the Artisan hotel for two full days and nights. Reprehensible behaviour clearly followed with Andrea taking the lead on her newly 'acquired' mobility scooter.

I took to the decks around 4am, 'fresh' from having played at DefCon, a giant hacker's convention in one of the big casino hotels. I was playing off a (borrowed) USB stick for the first time, and amongst the shenanigans unfolding was me loading up a few more tracks off my laptop whenever we ran out and hot-swapping the decks as we rolled into the next day.

It's unclear how long I played for, as this is just an excerpt of the set which randomly dropped in my mailbox several months later, but I figured it'd be nice to have for posterity for those who were there ... and for the mildly curious, of course.
