Simon Shackleton One Series

The concept was a simple one ... One DJ, One Room, All Night in exceptional surroundings with jaw-dropping visuals (installations, performance etc), decor, and sound all combining to create a unique, fully immersive experience all based around an extraordinary, one-off musical journey.

A big driver of this passion was the simple notion that when it comes to DJaying, it's all about the context - how you set moments up, how you create curves in your sets, of the peaks and the troughs, the deliberate breathers, the space to listen, to move, to engage with the sounds on a deeper level. It's how you present a track that makes it grow, that makes it hit home much harder than it could ever do in isolation. If we lose those skills, and people become disassociated with the concept of movement and context in a set, we wind up with what we're edging ever closer towards - a monochrome landscape of brick wall noise where there's no scope for growth, for exploration, for creativity.

Well *that* was something else. Truly.

This was the fourth successive year I'd played a sunrise on the Playa with my most excellent friends at the Nutz camp, and this year *everyone* upped the bar. The One Series (my vehicle for DJs to express themselves fully through uber-long sets) effectively sprang out of the love & passion for these ethereal mornings at Burning Man, so it seemed fitting that this would become One Playa Sunrise.

As with every year the sun was shining, everyone wore a vast, passionate smile with wonderful sights & sounds filling the air. We were joined by The Dusty Rhino & Painkiller, along with most of Distrikt. It was the perfect morning.

At the end, six intensely wonderful hours later, I dissolved into tears, not for the first time this week & the dancefloor submerged me.

San Francisco was a wild ride. It always is. We found an uber-cool underground spot, right in the heart of the financial Distrikt (sic) and with the help of Mad Dog and All of it Now Visuals, transformed the space into a beautiful, dreamlike warehouse.

Over 700 people packed into the space, and danced 'til dawn to this 6-hour plus set ... the intention is always to make these One Series parties as immersive as possible, and as the final vocal harmonies floated off into the cool morning air, there was no shortage of <3 around from the hundreds of people who remained on the floor.

The first One Series show of 2015 took place on 23rd May at one of the finest clubs in North America, Beta, in association with awesome local crew, The Fantastic Hosts. The massive 4-stack Funktion One rig is legendary worldwide, and was an absolute thrill to take over for the night.

Beta were an amazing team to work with on the night, with everyone going the extra mile to  make this a truly special one. Special mention goes to Eric Basquez for building me a special touchscreen controller to enable me to show various words and short poems on the big LED screens through the night, which I suspect will be the first stepping stone on the road to live sets as Simon Shackleton that will, all being well, premier at the end of 2015.

Another spectacular One Series show with some inspirational collaborators. I hope you enjoy the mix, which as ever is a warts & all recording of the entire night :)

The One Series [DEN014] - Simon Shackleton - Denver

That was a *truly* unforgettable night in London.

We've had some amazing boat parties over the years, but it felt like there was something particularly special in the air. The transition to a One Series set was *so much fun* for me personally, starting out with some low slung funk & percussive deep house, rolling through the gears with some widescreen tech & bass house and finally bringing home the bacon with an anthemic outburst of classic techno.

I can't thank family and friends enough for being so supportive, so engaged, so welcoming, and so THERE. Such a spectacular, and special night. Thank you all.

The One Series [LON015] - Simon Shackleton Boat Party - London

(PART TWO)

Recorded Live and unedited at Nutz Camp, Burning Man 2015 ... this most epic of One Series Sunrise sets wound up some time after 3pm. Given it's length (at around 9 hours), it has been split into two parts. For those of you looking for a single downloadable version, I may well put that on my Dropbox (download on request).

This Burn was my 7th, and the 6th playing Sunrise at Nutz. Far & away the biggest crowd to date gathered around dawn and joined me for 9 hours of pure magic, as only the playa can provide. This Burn was tough - the weather was aggressive, punishing and harsh, and we both commemorated huge losses (Jon Horvath, David Ringel) and learnt of the saddest of losses to our DISTRIKT family (Mike Reigle) as we were on the Playa.

This set held their spirits dear - a celebration of life, of love, or growth, of transformation, of commemoration.

Well, that was quite something.

Recovery mode has been initiated and rejuvenation is now complete. I just wanted to say a HUGE heartfelt thank you to every single one of you that came down, felt and shared the heart emoticon and made Saturday's One Series *such* a massive high.

I'd also like to thank The Public Works SF for being a joy to work with, Kevin Zhu from All of it Now for the stunning visual accompaniment, and Mad Dog from the beautiful steampunk stage design.

The One Series [SFO017] - Simon Shackleton - Publicworks San Francisco

The 18th One Series took place in Denver at a brand new annexe to City Hall.

We overcame one or two technical issues with ground loops & power outages in the early stages of the night, but triumphed thanks to all the hundreds of beaming souls who came out to play and made for such an impassioned evening.

A big thank you goes out to all the lighting & sound wizz-kids, and of course my good friends 'Surreal Laser' and 'The Fantastic Hosts'.

Another stunning night at Publicworks on the back of *that* election result. I deliberately kept things upbeat and optimistic, which made for one of THE most fun sets I've ever played.

The One Series [MAN021] - Simon Shackleton - Joshua Brooks, Manchester

This was the final One Series show in a 5-year run of events that began at Cellspace in San Francisco back in 2012. 

These sets gave me a much-needed chance to breathe and to branch out from the peaktime headline shows I'd been playing for many years. They allowed me time to spread my wings musically and explore different tempos and different flavours and tell a story from cover to cover. They inspired me and kept me going at a time when I was deeply disillusioned by electronic music's move into the bubblegum candy-pop of the supersized McRave. 

I believe that music has the power to affect people deeply and that it can be felt on a spiritual level, and during these sets I always felt that connection profoundly. I'm proud of what I achieved with them and that a beautiful legacy remains.

This particular set had to be reconstructed from 2/3rds of the way through as the recorder malfunctioned, but I didn't want to leave the Final One unarchived, so here it is in all of it's 6-hours of glory.
