PROGRAM NOTES
Although Deep Blue Ocean is not meant to be overtly programmatic, I thought it would be wonderful to explore the oceanic depths, so during a trip to the Gulf of Mexico I became a certified scuba diver. I was truly inspired, whether by the large rolling waves on the open sea, the delicate back and forth of beds of seaweed, the vibrant colors of fish clustering around cities of coral, or the beams of sunlight that cascade over the ocean’s surface.

I was also inspired by my four year old son Dylan: his name means ocean or god of the seas in Welsh; he is an Aquarius, which means the water bearer; he is an excellent swimmer, and he loves listening to a movement of one of my choral works entitled Infinite Oceans.

While writing this piece, I could not have known that the worst oil spill in U.S. history would occur just north of where I visited. The darker moments in this work are the result of this tragedy. It is in three connected movements: The Darkness Below, Sunbeams and Waterfalls, and Accents and Waves.

Deep Blue Ocean is written for Steven Gosling and Blair McMillen of the American Modern Ensemble and is dedicated to my son Dylan.

As we live through a sixth mass extinction, it is not difficult to question whether we can act as good stewards of our earth. While I often feel a sense of despair — how could we have messed this up so badly? — my thoughts are often, perhaps irrationally, tempered by a sense of optimism. Maybe we can fix this, or at least that’s what I tell myself. Triple Concerto is essentially an exploration of these emotions. As a scenic point of departure, the entire work also uses three types of geographical regions as inspiration.

Triple Concerto is structured a bit differently than a traditional concerto. An introduction and three larger movements are interspersed with three small trio-centric movements that loosely function as either a prelude, interlude, or cadenza. These three smaller movements also exist as a stand-alone version for the piano trio that may be performed as a sort of “teaser” for the concerto on a chamber music concert.

The first movement, Introduction, loosely evokes a sunrise. Toward the end of the movement, bird song melodies from around the world are incorporated and performed by the winds. This leads to a movement entitled Chorale Prelude, focusing on the piano trio, leading to a joyful third movement, Bright Pastorale, filled with bright, sunlit bell-like chords and sounds reminiscent of birdsong. Moments of despair begin to appear as the movement progresses. The movement ends darkly, like an overcast sky before a storm. The fourth movement, Interlude, echoes the beginning, focusing on the trio once again and evoking a sense of longing, the sound of a more innocent time. Tundra, the fifth movement, is cold, dark, and bleak but with swaths of color. A sense of sadness and loneliness permeates this movement, at times represented by various mournful effects such as bent notes created by dipping tubular bells in water and glissandi in the strings and brass.

After the fifth movement, the trio performs a virtuosic Cadenza, full of grief and rage but with signs of hope. This leads to the final movement, entitled Summit. Ascending lines suggest climbing a mountain, both literally and figuratively. After a brief climax, eleven bell-like chords sound one after the other, symbolizing the chimes of the Doomsday Clock. The winds perform birdsong once again, perhaps of songbirds that may soon become endangered or even extinct. In a nod to Haydn’s Symphony No. 45 (his “Farewell Symphony”), the players leave the stage one by one until all that is left are the trio and conductor.

Triple Concerto was commissioned by the Neave Trio and premiered by the trio and Mostly Modern Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta, conductor, at Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY.

My new song and video "Another Chance To Live Again" are about the profound feelings of loss that so many people in Ukraine have experienced since they were attacked by war criminals starting in 2014.   
I wanted to express and encapsulate the feelings not only of individual people but of an entire country and society so I used religious and spiritual references in the music and lyrics.  
I traveled to Ukraine to film the video in some of the locations of the worst atrocities in Irpin and Bucha.  The video begins at a destroyed cultural center that was once the go-to place for plays, concerts and other happy community events. Out back was the Irpin soccer stadium where teams and children played and practiced.  It is now pockmarked with dozens of artillery holes and thousands of shrapnel wounds. The other building in the video was filled with hundreds of apartments where people lived before it was attacked with missiles. The destroyed bridge was initially used by Ukrainians trying to escape the enemy bombings until the enemy massacred hundreds of civilians driving across it.  The Ukrainian Armed Forces blew it up so the enemy could not advance with tanks and heavy equipment. The church scarred with shrapnel is located right next to the bridge.  
We filmed with the permission of the Armed Forces while air raid sirens were blaring and attack drones and missiles were being shot down overhead.  It was all very emotional for me because I knew that families with their children died right where I was filming.  I talked to many people who lost loved ones and told them that I was there to tell their stories to the world.

"Tea with Debussy & Pärt in Casablanca" is a musical dream that bloomed during my vacation in Havana, Cuba. Inspired by classical masterpieces from Arvo Pärt and Claude Debussy, I envisioned an imaginary encounter with these esteemed composers in Casablanca, over Moroccan tea.

Commissioned by a dear friend and talented violist Vincent Delorme, this piece is not an imitation of their styles but rather a heartfelt conversation between us. It embodies the essence of typical conversations in Morocco, where we all speak at the same time, meandering from topic to topic, and experiencing numerous changes of atmospheres, tempi, textures, and fragments of thematic material.

It begins with minimalist touches, a nod to Pärt's recent works, where the piano introduces serene arpeggios, intertwining with heartfelt viola melodies. As we delve into our tea time, I incorporate some of Debussy's harmonic vocabulary. 

Throughout our harmonious dialogue, the piece mirrors the dynamic nature of conversations in Morocco. We experience moments of collective excitement, where the music swells with vibrant textures and lively tempi, as if everyone is speaking at once. Themes and motifs emerge and intertwine, mirroring the meandering nature of our discussion as we navigate from one topic to another.

As our musical journey unfolds, our collaboration celebrates cultural fusion, weaving together Pärt, Debussy, and my artistic zest. Each voice contributes to the narrative, inviting moments of wonder and contemplation through our shared inspirations.

This piece is about freedom, a fundamental human right, and was inspired by my solo travels in Vietnam where I gained deeper insights into the brutality of the French occupation and the Vietnam War. I really admire the Vietnamese people's resilience, strength and unity. Vietnam has many lush, emerald forests filled with singing birds. The forests line many limestone mountains, on land and in the sea.

Harlequin

The main theme is another one from my distant teenage years, written on a small keyboard as a flute tune. 
My friend like it, so we fooled around with it and even recorded a song called ''Field of Dew'', as a satine of folkish/radio friendly love songs popular in Dalmatia, that alone probably influenced me to use the theme for a romance-like composition.
Sentiment and content wise, it is very personal, filled with melodies reminiscing all of turmoil one can experience in love, from happy moments like the first glance in the shared with one another in a crowd during a Metallica cover band concert, strolling through the sun bathed forest of Gorski Kotar, and many more, both happy and unhappy. 
This piece is dedicated to Vanja Kalemba, the mother of my son and also the author of many paintings I use as a art cover of my compositions.

Alterlift - Nocturne [ZYTRAXX012, release date 08.05.2024]

While I was composing my F-sharp minor Fantasy, I found myself stuck on a particular middle section, struggling to find the right variation to complete the piece. Eventually, I succeeded, but before that happened, I wrote numerous segments that didn’t quite fit into the piece.

Fortunately, some of these discarded variations began to resonate with each other, leading to the creation of smaller pieces that I grew very fond of. The first of these became my Prelude in F-sharp Minor, and the second, the Moment Musicaux in A Major.

These two compositions share some motivic figures down to the note, yet in feeling and meaning, they couldn’t be more different. Despite the brief scope of the Moment Musicaux in question, I believe there is much to discover within it, with every new small section providing something unique and unexpected.

Song of Winter's night

My new piece based on a theme that surfaced when I was writting my resigned and dark Intermezzo, which in contrast, turned out to be one of the brighest and joyfull of my creations, very lively and bursting with vitality, almost reminding me of a spring flower that ascended from a damp graveyard.
This piece was probably the one I've written in the shortest amount of time,  majority of it written in a mere several hours.
