AWEH is delighted to share an exciting new musical project and present the highly anticipated collaboration EP titled "Shukuma." This ambitious project unites the visionary label head, Esa, with the legendary South African Kwaito artist, Kamazu, hailing from the vibrant township of Soweto, Johannesburg. Crafted meticulously over two years, from 2020 to 2022, "Shukuma" is a testament to the limitless power of musical synergy and the awe-inspiring richness of South African culture.

The title track, Shukuma, is a prime example of the collaborative brilliance between Esa and Kamazu, blending future kwaito-inspired elements with acid house. It represents a sonic manifestation of their shared creative vision. The EP pays homage to Kwaito and its profound connection to Chicago House, which left a lasting impression on the South African music genre during the 90s. Additionally, the EP boasts another future Kwaito classic, Muntu. This infectious dancefloor banger showcases the continued creative partnership of Esa and Kamazu but also features the innovative contributions of Dirty Bungalow, infusing the EP with a fresh and vibrant energy into the mix. Muntu has already gained recognition and acclaim, having been featured in the esteemed podcast series, The Invisible Hand.

To enhance the complete auditory and visual experience surrounding Shukuma, Esa has collaborated with the exceptionally talented artists and friends Floating B_strd and Sanoy. Together, they have crafted an exquisite piece of art that encapsulates the very essence of the EP. The final artwork will be unveiled on the official release day, building anticipation and intrigue. This unique fusion of music and visual art adds depth and excitement to the project.

"Shukuma" transcends being a mere EP; it invites listeners on an journey that celebrates the profound talents of Esa, Kamazu, and the creative minds that contributed to its realisation. Through the fusion of traditional Kwaito elements and contemporary influences, this release truly showcases the artistry behind the music. In an era dominated by recording reissues, "Shukuma" emerges as a standout, embodying the fusion of artistic expression and cultural exploration.

Ocean People stands for a lifetime of musical exploration – and a pandemic reinvention.

Growing up far north in Helsinki, Sampo aka Ocean People fell in love with hip hop and DJing at the age of 13. A decade later, as DJ Anonymous, he was sharing bills with De La Soul, The Roots & Common. He was also traveling to play cities across Europe. Tours later extended to Asia & North America – first NYC booking was at beloved & long-gone APT.

A childhood spent with hip hop stimulated a voracious appetite for adjacent sounds. By 2000, Sampo had partnered with friends to start Lifesaver, a specialist record shop. It was popular with locals and visitors alike. J-Dilla, Moodymann and countless others all dropped some hard-earned €€€ there.
He was also falling deeper in love with disco, house and their intercontinental variants. This was a personal revelation, as it led to a full appreciation of collective dance floor joy. It is also the origin story of Ocean People.

The idea existed dormant for years, as Sampo focused on business outside the DJ realm. In the isolation of the pandemic, inspiration struck hard. This resulted in a new course of musical action, under a new pseudonym.

Since then, Ocean People has built a shared home base called HRD Underground Workshop. It's a purpose-built IRL space that explores co-operative action and high-fidelity sound. HRD also streams curated live recordings on its Soundcloud platform.
In the booth, Ocean People aspires to always deliver timeless, emotive dance music, weaved into expansive narrative arches. No matter the setting, collective joy remains the singular goal.

Our "Most Likely" mixtape series is once again graced with brilliance from Bergen, this time by the extraordinary DJ and producer, and dear friend Julie Silset. Not only has Julie left a significant mark with her releases on her own label, Ideophone Records, and her remarkable remix of Sgurvin on "Most Likely," but she has also been captivating us with her spellbinding music and dynamic DJ performances over recent years.  Adding to her impressive portfolio, Julie is set to play a five-hour-long DJ set with records at her residency at Østre tonight! 

We're super happy to host an hour long mix of serious techno bangers. Get your Friday ears ready for an energetic dose of hi-energy squeeze!

80s Soukous / Champeta Vinyl Mix (Aurlus Mabélé, Elvis Kemayo, Théo Blaise and more)

Simon Alejandro and Olav Eggestøl recently played the very last DJ set ever at Rommet, Bergen. Their final performance included dub, house, disco, zouk, mpb, rap and highlife.

The following day they went straight into the studio and recorded an epic mix of that set, now scheduled to air on Vers Libre.

Tune in for a piece of history as the chieftains of Jungelen and Mhost Likely go back-to-back for 4 hours of music, a deep dive into their own music collections. One final, graceful bow out as Rommet exits the arena. A thanks for everything it has given to the city of Bergen!
