Fermentation of red cabbage

An edition of 20 unique lathe-cut X-ray records inspired by Russian “roentgenizdat” records from the 1950’s (home made bootlegs of banned Western pop music pressed onto discarded X-rays) – these playable 8” records each feature a different X-ray image and a composed sound work made from recordings taken in Forth Valley Royal’s radiology department.

Whilst in the Gambia around Christmas time 2009, I took a trip to a Village called Juffure, the birth place of the Slave, Kunta Kinte. 

 I met with some kids who were welcoming the tourists with a song. They used sticks and plastics tubs to beat a rhythm at 96 BPM (Ableton counted for me!) This combined with their hearty voices compelled me to record them. I put a some arrangements and banging beats over it. The little kiddies are aged between 4-6 yrs old.

The musical will feature all original songs from the diverse talents of the musical creative team;  featuring electronic grime from Patricia Panther, reggae-dub from Scots-Asian Rapper MC Soom T, folk/rock  from Cora Bissett and additional songs from John Kielty.

This is the third programme in the 'Bedside Radio' series produced for the launch of Channel 604 (Radio Royal's new arts channel). This composed soundscape was created from recordings made in various hospital departments between 2011 and 2013. It also includes conversations with staff about their own perception of the sound environment they work in. In addition to Forth Valley Royal, recordings were also made in Stirling and Falkirk Community Hospitals. Special thanks to all staff and patients in NHS Forth Valley Hospitals for their help and cooperation.

The sounds that make up this piece were recorded in the following departments:
Anaesthesiology, Clinical Simulation Centre, Health Records, Reception, Laboratories, Ophthalmology, Physiotherapy, Oral and Maxillofacial, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Mail Room, Neonatal Unit, Pharmacy, Renal Unit and Speech and Language Therapy Services.
