Multi Culti launch a new quarterly 12” series in step with the seasons beginning with SOLSTICE I:

Post-pandemic lockdown inspiration can be found in the great planetary balancing act that has taken place since a cataclysmic impact with an asteroid caused mass extinction and set our earth’s orbit off axis. This AXIAL TILT, or obliquity, is responsible for the seasons, and life as we know it has evolved around these unleashed forces. As our lives and for many, careers, have spun dramatically off axis as of late, we look ahead to the coming seasons, with the hope that we can weather the changes, and maintain inner stability.  To aid in this quest, Multi Culti promises to deliver sonic support with utmost regularity at the peak moments of cosmic significance, with each Solstice and Equinox.

Finally, the big guy - MANFREDAS - whose remixes and edits have been highlight-reel material the past couple of years, delivers a long awaited original track with his requisite heavy-weight swag. Wonky tunings and a chunky downtempo beat underpin Manny’s trademark masterful arrangement style, building patiently, with breakdowns that managed to wring every last drop of impact out of an odd, other-worldy assortment of sounds.

Iñigo Vontier & Simple Symmetry - Hocus Pocus

Simple Symmetry is a project by the Lipsky brothers. Sweating hard in garage bands, the two would dedicate nights to dance sets, breaking the boundaries of the commercial club culture with a fresh psychedelic sound, — a real commitment back in the day and a guarantee for a hard but exciting time breaking through. 

24/7 record digging, music making and dreaming evoked some serious energies and friendships, resulting in records and releases on Multi Culti (curated by Thomas Von Party ) and Dischi Autunno (by Jennifer Cardini). Simple Symmetry remixes Nicola Cruz, Adam Port, Polo&Dan and also underground acts like Balagan, Autarkic, Drugface, Gaye Su Akyol to name a few. The ride becomes wild and the tour dates epic: DC10, Life and Death at ADE and OFFSónar, Opium Club, Mexico and India tours, gigs in Berlin, Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, Tel-Aviv… Culmination of the pre-covid era for Simple Symmetry became their collaboration heavy debut LP, 'Sorry, We Did Something Wrong', where Sepultura's Igor Cavalera beats the drums, C.A.R holds the mic. 

In 2022 Simple Symmetry arrives on System 108 as residents, opening a new chapter of their fantastic journey in music with an epic track 'Czars In My Eyes' featuring Lord Fascinator. Early DJ support comes from The Blessed Madonna, Acid Arab, Erol Alkan, Jennifer Cardini, OPTIMO — in anticipation of an upcoming remix EP, scheduled for early 2023.

PREMIERE: Simple Symmetry - Elephant On Speed

Simple Symmetry, Lord Fascinator - Czars In My Eyes (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) [snippet]

Simple Symmetry turn in an epic, mournful EP that reflects on their journey in exile.
 
After a long-standing affiliation with Multi Culti that includes remixes for Nicola Cruz and Drugface, as well as a huge edit for CULTED, the Russian brothers weigh in with a heavy 12” that comes on the back of an emotional year where they defected from Moscow, their world turned upside down by politics of aggression. ‘Problem’ is built around a kernel of punk panic performed by Hugo Van Heijningen (of Red Light Radio, Cawd Slaydaz, Order Collective). The anxious rage embedded in that opener finds a kind of disoriented catharsis in ‘Where I Am’, an uptempo ravey anthem that recalls the rush of CJ Bolland’s ‘Electronic Superhighway’ with a sense of angst and energy all their own. It’s the song of the soul-searching raver, finding a sense of home in the ecstasy of the dance, amidst a backdrop of oppressive fear and uncertainty.
The triptych concludes with the mournful ‘Funeral of Past Affections’, their own strange brand of horn sounding a vast and potent letting go. At once influenced by and homage to Andrew Weatherall, this one hits hard, emotionally. Imagine tears on the dancefloor, the strings reminding us that dance music can indeed be anchored in the very deepest centre of our soul.
Supporting them on this trip are long-time compatriots Red Axes, a natural fit for the indie-punk elements in ‘Problem’ and, as digital bonus, Multi Culti maestro Ofofo.

Brainchild of Multi Culti A&R, Sascha Funke and Niklas Wandt were introduced by Dreems, who charted a course for the seasoned Berlin-based producer and funky multi-percussionist and singer. 

Wandt was just about to enter the scene forcefully with his collaborative 2LP with Wolf Müller and the debut single of his band Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge. In the icey cold of his warehouse rehearsal space, Funke had him record a variety of slapped, bowed and scratched percussions (congas, talking drum, prepared cymbals played with a bass bow) over his tracks. These first efforts were later expanded into joint sessions at Sascha's home studio and, within a few weeks, the journey reached it’s destination: Wibe strasse, Deutschland.

At first glance, they seem an odd couple: a techno veteran of almost thirty years meets a side-burned upstart socialized in Free Jazz and Krautrock. but the shared sonic influences come through in the hypnotic, dubbed-out sound, perhaps rooted in the close connection the two share to the Rheinland region in West Germany, Funke as part of the Kompakt family and Wandt by origin and socialization in the Cologne and Düsseldorf music scene centered around the Salon des Amateurs. Regional flavours, global appeal. Multi Culti, promoting local collaboration, one freaky record at a time.

Years of sweating in garage bands evidently prepared the Lipsky brothers to break boundaries in commercial club culture with a sound that somehow evokes the essence of psych-rock while never sounding out of place alongside certified technoid bangers.

Their musical breadth as producers speaks to their talent as DJs, with a deep passion for record digging that again conveys very specific sensibilities – a love for the exotic, the yearning for transcendence, as well as the rough rebellious energy of punk. They produce dance music from the margins, full of with narrative, melody, and drama. It’s intense, in a good way.* 

Their affiliations to broad-spectrum labels like Multi Culti, Disco Halal and Correspondant might paint some picture of their range, and their stellar remixes for artists like Nicola Cruz, Adam Port, Autarkic and Polo & Pan may have earned them lots of plays,  but their debut LP ‘Sorry, We Did Something Wrong’ is undoubtedly their most ambitious and elaborate statement to date. Drenched in their influences, rich in collabs with a range of artists like Sepultura’s Igor Cavalera and C.A.R., the record is at once ambitious and, as the title suggests, apologetic. Their capacity for embracing these polarities, a radical boldness tempered by self-consciousness, it may divide the audience, but it shows unmistakable personality.

This year, Simple Symmetry start a new chapter both in music and life after fleeing their native Russia, they returned to Multi Culti with an epic, mournful EP called “Problem,” featuring a huge remix by long-time compatriots Red Axes. Another huge edit for CULTED is on deck, as well as a peak-time rework of Drugface, following up on their massive mix of ‘In the Clouds.’
