In the wake of a weighty mix series and a sell-out Bristol show, Sudo Sound are here with another killer EP. Take the Lead is a well-matched pairing between a rising label and an established name - none other than Chord Marauder corner stone Jafu

Whilst the Canadian artist has worked with the likes of Geode, J. Sparrow, Kodama and Congi, his personal discography bears enough merit alone to cement his name in the scene for good.

Take the Lead comes a year after Jafu’s 26 track LP Stack City (Chord Marauders) and carries the same originality and sonic dexterity whilst leaning more towards the firmly dub-oriented feel that Sudo Sound has been championing in recent years.

The EP exemplifies Jafu’s ability to artfully present playful melodies, radical drum patterning and far-out sonics without pretence. Melodic progressions are anchored to head-nodding percussion and smile-inducing licks – explorations in sound that carry a modern edge whilst paying respects to the techniques and experimentalism typified by dub music’s originators.

Jafu opens with the titular Take the Lead which launches from a hyped-up vocal sample into an adventure that veers between trademark melodic expression and darker phrases too –eastern accents and whip cracks peep out from between murky lows and provide subtlety to an otherwise body shaking track.

In Used To, Jafu opens with light atmospheric chord work before pulling the rug from beneath us as we find ourselves in the midst of trudging wobs and steady kicks. As with Take the Lead, the central motifs of the song are maintained but modified – modulated by melodic expressions and dubbed out snippets from the spacey beyond.

The EP is not done there. Bonus track Flux n’ Fux is as irregular and swung as the last 18 months and yet just as enjoyable as your first night back in the dance. Delightfully catchy melodies sit astride asymmetrical drum patterns in a track exemplifies Jafu’s reputation as a boundary pusher.

"It`s been more than a year now since our last GreyNote compilation dropped. Meanwhile We all went through some crazy times. some of us were affected more and some less.

In Colombia the people are affected pretty hard. Not only by Covid. Even more by the violence and corruption of their government. 
In early 2021 Demonstrators were speaking out about structural inequality, poverty, land reform, police violence, health care, and lack of education and opportunity. 

A lot of these problems have existed in Colombia for years, but they deepened dramatically during the pandemic. 
Police responded with repeatedly and arbitrarily dispersing peaceful demonstrations by using excessive, often brutal force, including live ammunition. 

Multiple killings by police, as well as beatings, sexual abuse, and arbitrary detention of demonstrators and bystanders are documented.

In order to support the fight against the violence by the Colombian government we made this compilation. 100% of the profits will go to Temblores ONG. So please donate when the time has come!"

“M4 is a tune that I wrote back in 2017 when I was living in Bristol. At the time I was really into writing melodic pieces and messing around with as many synths as possible. I decided to add some heavy bass to this one cinematic organ progression and laid down some basic drums over the top and called it a day really. I think I sent it out to a couple people (one being Mala) and forgot about it. 

Another few years went by and the tune has changed a bit to stay in line with my current production style arriving at the version that’s set to be released. Abacus was just an all out bass experiment that I never thought would see the light of day and Dusty really shows off the more melodic style of my productions. After hearing these tunes played on big systems for so long I’m really happy that everyone can now finally get their hands on a copy.”
