Where to start? The year is 1990. The locale is Italy. The European techno-trance wave is in full swing, built on the foundations of New Beat, with Frankfurt, Valencia, Goa and the Italian riviera as hotspots for this new sound created by blue-eyed producers in the four corners of the Old World.

A few producers linked to the wonderful & influential label DFC release music under the name ATAHUALPA. The influences are Latin, and Inca to be more precise. After all, Atahualpa was the last Inca emperor, executed by the Conquistadors. Weird flex ragazzi, but OK. 

Anyways, I have always loved this tune. It's got everything I love. Early trance arpeggios which are a reminder of the link between Hi-NRG, EBM, New Beat and the T word. Cheeky pan-pipe melodies. Breakbeat loops. Spanish vocals. Early 90s cultural naivety. And a lead keyboard sound that feels like a harpsichord. I fucking love harpsichords.

I love playing this tune when it's the least expected. It sounds even better given the slow treatment. So I sure hope you will vibe with it as much as I do.

Atahualpa - Ultimo Imperio (Ed Isar 100 BPM edit)

The river was the only route out of the city. It stretched for miles and miles, ebbing and flowing with the breeze that carried it along. Dark green leaves and sprawling branches formed a canopy over the water, protecting this natural place from prying eyes. It felt peaceful, a place for escaping the stresses of city life. In fact, this river held many secrets, stories that would make your hair stand on end. Its beauty was simply a facade...

Next up on XXX, the Dutch label run by DJ and producr SHMLSS, is good friend and Bordello A Parigi alumni Stijn Sadée. After two contributions to earlier releases for the label, he's now set to release his first original EP on the label, which features a remix from Smala boss Manfredas that they locked in after the Lithuanian producer saw Stijn play live last year. The aesthetics of the label are down to Stijn's brother Thomas who worked closely with him to create something that fitted with the music and his influences.

After starting to build his reputation and being featured on different compilations like the Sofa Elsewhere LVI, shelTer, Risks Issues Opportunities and the first punk-ish electronic Danzas Electricas Vol. 2, Houschyar is on to deliver his debut album, Temmuz, on Macadam Mambo. 

Temmuz must be taken as the soundtrack of a night ride throughout Istanbul on a warm summer night, while the track “Escape” feels as if it develops tension and mysterious ambiguity, immersed fully by the rhythms of synthesizers and guitar effects.
Temmuz is out now on Macadam Mambo.

Sternburg, flowing down a metallic nerve and legacy of declassed elements, gives rise to second part of Punkish et Metallic - series of edits on the label of exiled French artists - Maturre.  Punkish et Metallic is intended to be burned after listening. Warm your hands, fill your head with smoke, get disoriented from the heat, mix remains of burnt vinyl with glass, broken on Richardsstrasse, and then bury everything, next to the grave of your favorite rat."

The label launched in January 2019 and has featured a combination of singles and compilation releases with artists such as Sascha Funke, Curses, TAPAN, Damon Jee, Biesmans, Khidja, Italo Brutalo, Shubostar, Anatolian Weapons, and Tolouse Low Trax, to name a few and its objective is to promote positive social change and raise funds for our Sinchi Foundation, which supports Indigenous forest guardians in the Brazilian Amazon.
