Dystopian lucid dreaming… Is this reality? Is this a nightmare? Are we sharing the same dream or are we all part of yours? 

We have no answers. But we do have the perfect soundtrack as Curses’ label Ombra International continue to join the most powerful dots around the world. Somewhere between dark disco and post-punk, it’s the label’s first vinyl release in some time with three debuts and two highlights from the recent Ombra International 17 ‘Destiny’ V/A EP. All things connected, all things unclassifiable, sitting somewhere between Italo, indie, acid house, electro, synthwave and beyond. 

Turkish dynamo Günce Acı takes the lead as she continues to accelerate into the scene with dominance. Her Ombra debut ‘Another Round’ pushes us head first into an acid primordial soup; Trippy, relentless and full of surprises, it’s another sure-fire sign of her exciting rise. 

Elsewhere long-time supporters and good friends of the label Juan MacLean and Hardway Bros also both make their label debuts. The former lays down the deep pulsating sensation ‘Monika’, a sojourn that stretches out over almost 10 minutes of heady, hypnotic bliss. Meanwhile the latter sends us love from his HQ outer space with the industrial strength euphoria bulldozer ‘Early Nineties’. Ploughman beats and cathedral keys, this washes away the bitter aftertaste of lockdown with unfiltered, uncut feels. 

And if that’s not quite enough worldly Ombra substance to fuel your dystopian dreams, then look no further as previous digital-only tracks Skelesys – ‘The Scorpio Sting’ and Jorkes and NIKKNAME – ‘Citizen’ are both revisited on this pivotal release for the label. Timeless music never dates; here’s to another 20 Ombra escapades…

Echo Chamber

This was written in my last few months living in East dulwich in London,  before I moved to Singapore in early 2010. I was going for a kind of dance Ibiza balearic style beat with a sort of lazy sunny feel.  it was another song that was nearly there but never quite finished.

So now 15 years later in 2025 I’ve finally got back to it. I’ve re-worked it re-thought it. it always had some guitars on it. Now found new guitar sounds a few counterpoint melodies that seemed to work quite well here.

Is it last days still?  well if it is last days it’s not of living in a place. it’s perhaps of the industry in which I work which seems to be crumbling down. Advertising for so long has been ripping off clients and not providing a genuinely good service and now it’s come home to roost as AI has dispelled and destroyed the ‘magic’ that charged at a premium.  I feel almost any week that goes by my job could disappear. Not because I don’t do a good job but because of the industry around me - in which I am complicit, has focused on fueling its own egos rather than actually helping clients and brands grow.

So Last days, indeed.  
Of the modern Roman Empire perhaps.
