COHN's latest EP, "Wine and Reason," delves into the enigmatic realm of Cosmic House, halfway between indie dark disco and Balearic house. This EP weaves a narrative of nostalgia and pulsating energy resulting in a cathartic blend of dancefloor killers. All the 3 tracks are a deep dive into 80s-inspired sounds, intricate percussion, and a seamless fusion of electronic elements perfected by COHN's unique touch.
Wine and Reason opens with La Salita, probably the most DJ-friendly tracks of the EP with its heavy load of groovy percussion. The M1 synths and percussion-heavy composition harken back to the '80s era, while a darker bassline adds a clubby and almost Italo House atmosphere. This newbeat-ish bass really makes the identity of the track which serves as an invigorating introduction to the rest of the EP..
The 2nd track "For Reason," sounds like a sonic time capsule that transports listeners back to the vibrant era of early electronic music. COHN used his skills to create a masterful blend of classic sounds and contemporary production techniques. The throbbing basslines, combined with ethereal synths, create a dancefloor-ready bomb that resonates with both balearic enthusiasts and darker indie dance aficionados.
Closing the EP is "Worthy of the Weather," a track that showcases COHN's versatility in electronic music. This house-infused gem combines woodwind melodies with pulsating synths, resulting in a composition that almost touches progressive house and early trance sonorities. The track's fusion of elements creates a cathartic experience, perfect for those late-night moments in intimate club atmospheres.
Wine and Reason resonates as a testament to COHN's production dexterity, proving that the artist can traverse the multiple sonic landscapes of House music, between nostalgic balearic vibes to darker club bangers. This perfect mix made the EP a logical fit for Mister T.’s 9th release, as a continuation of their exploration of leftfield 90s influences into club music. A long-time resident at Barcelona’s legendary Razzmatazz and label head of Factor City for two decades, Undo is a Spanish mainstay with countless releases that have garnered support from the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Roman Flugel and Erol Alkan. He teams up with fellow Spaniard and synth-pop wizard Casiowaves to return for their second collaborative release on Melodize after last year's 'Predict The Future' EP.

The straight-forward 'Casiobass' kicks off with fizzing synth lines, chugging dark disco drums, a fat bass and circling pads. 'Overcruiser' is a pumping, Italo-influenced cut with retro-future chords and a clean, cosmic feel, while 'Something Blue' layers up the crispy analogue drums with sonar pulses, deadpan cold wave vocals and majestic leads that bring color and vibrancy.

Drummer-turned electronic producer and live act Nhar, who boasts an impressive discography spanning two decades, makes his debut on the label with a remix of 'Waves to Come' that brings a widescreen serenity and calm to the original through pensive chord work and starry keys twinkling in the distance. The original then closes out with Balearic guitar licks, punchy drums, and rich bass for a fusion of retro sounds with futuristic sentiment. From the driving Casiobass to the Balearic, serene 'Waves to Come,' Undo & Casiowaves have served up offerings for all hours with the versatile 'Casiobass' EP.

Its been a hell of a ride on the swinging glitter ball of the modern music scene for BOYS' SHORTS of late. The Greek duo, made up of former superstar music blogger Vangelis and electronic artist Tareq, have enjoyed a positive and productive couple of years since exploding from the islands armed with a wealth of exciting new music. 

Boys Shorts have squeezed more into the last 24months than Mr Universe into his second-skin budgie smugglers, featuring their music on an already impressive roster of labels including Permanent Vacation, He-She-They and Cormac’s Polari. With a deepening international diary, support slots for Hot Chip in the can, and a super-fun pop edits series taking off, Boys Shorts, as their name suggest, are riding high and tighter than ever. 

Today they make their Pets debut with the wonderful ‘Peaches & Pools’ EP. A collection of well oiled heaters, bold in balearia and backed by two equally naughty reworks from Cooper Saver and Longhair. Dip your toes into a sonic oasis of sunshine vibes and lounging sounds on title track 'Peaches & Pools’, then slide into the sunset with the melodic keys and bassline groove of 'Wrapped In Memories', before hitting the dancefloor to the cosmic cowbell and throbbing synth line of 'Tricks She Said’. 

Cooper Saver goes poolside to planetary with the first of two reworks of the title track. Firing us back in time on a stunning ride of warm bass, broken beats and cascading water. Longhair maintains the 90’s theme, throwing down a bongo rhythm, slap bass and added synths to complete a superb brace of remixes.

There are some characters and labels so intertwined with the story of specific music genres that is virtually impossible to discuss them without mentioning the importance and relevance of such masterminds and imprints. Take the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene for instance. We dare you to talk about it without bringing up Sir Neil Parnell aka Tronik Youth (SXDNS050) and his mighty platform NEIN Records during your music talks.

With a behemoth of a catalogue overflowing with dark cuts, NEIN is undoubtedly one of the most vital outlets in the dark side of music. Neil is equally impressive, distilling his creativity with a plethora of originals and collaborations throughout his career of twenty-something years. Having a NEIN-only year so far, he brings to life his third EP of the year and invited Fred Berthet and Calystarr for the remix duties. Premiered here, the latter’s contribution.

Adrián Peña Sánchez aka Calystarr is a DJ and producer from Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz. For his third appearance on NEIN, his mission of providing an interpretation for the big boss must have been a tough one – but nothing that would make the skilled Spanish virtuoso have cold feet. His complex and stark version brings together a few of his main influences, resulting in an intricate concoction of Cold Wave, EBM, and Industrial with a kind of spooky aura.
