Teniente Castillo 'Virtual Reality' (Squarewave Remix)

Aurum Miles returns to Blindetonation with three more eccentric disco cuts backed with remixes by FLVN and Mijo.

Miles hails from Lithuania and has grown up around shoegaze, rock and British indie, and was later touched by electronic sounds. A keys, drums and guitar player who mixes up all these influences with narcotic weirdness, he always cooks up magic on this label and does so again now.

Arresting opener ‘Shambolic Mind’ is driven by slap-funk drums and a monstrous bassline. Phased synths ride up the scale and add flesh to the darkened bones of this libidinous chugger. Taking a different path is the more melodic and tripped out ‘The Legend’ with its rattling tambourines, metallic drums and freewheeling synth lines all reaching for the lasers. The most playful of the lot is the fantastic ‘Be Free’ with tooting synth arps and filtered, dehumanised vocals. It’s a colourful cut that brims with future charm.

FLVN’s work is influenced by the darker industrial side of disco, psychedelic electronica and techno and comes on labels like Night Noise. Here he flips ‘Shambolic’ into an echo laden and dubbed out stomper with shadowy moods and heavy grooves. Mijo is Mexican born and makes music under a number of names such as La Royale and Yesco. Here he serves up an Ultradub of ‘The Legend’ that is twisted and cosmic, psychedelic and brightly lit by fantastic synths.
As far as left of centre dance floor disco goes, there are few finer labels out there right now than this one.

Syrian born and raised duo @Boshoco land on Sinchi with a new track that samples the first-ever Arabic Sesame Street, and comes with remixes by Damon Jee and Shubostar.

Once again this is a non-profit release, this time raising money for Syrian NGO Jusoor, which is made up of Syrian expatriates who build bridges between the boundless potential of young Syrians and their
opportunities for education, entrepreneurship and global community engagement.

Boshoco's sound is playful, energetic and dark, and recalls nostalgic elements we all have in common. They grew up getting music on bootlegged cassettes and CDs from local musicians in Aleppo and met
whilst working in a camp for people displaced from their homes. Together they moved to Turkey and became residents in Temple club in Istanbul and now, given the restrictions of movement on Syrians,
they had to split, with half of the pair getting political asylum in France and the other moving to Beirut and continuing to work remotely.
Say the pair of the track, "'Semsem' (like the name Boshoco, a cheap ice cream we both used to eat in Aleppo as children), with the children singing, the heavy baseline, the mystical mezmar solo and the
energetic beat, is an homage to the little pretty things that made life sweet in Aleppo and to the heavier emotions that came to it with time." It is a darkly intoxicating tune with a meandering bassline and plenty
of exotic instrumentals that transport you to another world.

Hailing from South Korea, @Shubostar has been immersing herself in the ever-evolving underground scene of South Korea and Thailand and now Mexico. Her common theme is 'cosmic' and since 2018 she runs her own uju Records with Korean painter Daryung Kim. Her remix is full of prowling late-night energy and dystopian synth work. Splashing cymbals and a grinding bassline all help make it a brilliantly alluring affair.

The intriguing tale of French duo Kimshies continues... Their sole release from 2004 re-upped into the ether by Solomun in 2018, it triggered a return to the studio after almost 15 years. Making up for lost time, they’ve already dropped two exceptional EP's on Nein. Now comes their Duro debut... And it’s a perfect dark disco match.

Even the title says as much ‘Fucked Up Mama’: a scuzzy, frazzled jam rich in oiled distortion and lighting strike synths and a rising case of venomous acid mid-way, there’s a grit in the groove that’s going to take more than a few lockdown handwashes to feel clean from. It’s coupled by a series of equally forthright remixes: fresh from completing his debut album for Life & Death, Disco Halal alumni Autarkic strips your mama down to her kickdrum undies and redresses her in a dynamic laser laced charmer.

He’s in good company... Nein brethren Cabaret Nocturne makes a welcome appearance with a creeping dark electro twist while La Dame Noir’s Arthur Johnson gets busy with two perspectives; one where the swing and organs provide funky refreshment and a bonus one which takes us right back into the gritty analog mama-fucking attitude of the original. Exceptional. The intriguing tale continues...

A drunken beat with spiritual choruses opens 'Pleguem', the second track on this release. Everything quickly melts into acid modulations. An aura of mystery and darkness falls on the track. Screams and a hard snare rises to the top. Everything is lysergic. The balafon makes its appearance to relieve the heat like a bucket of cold water. We are fine now and we can't stop dancing.
