Toward the end of 2015 I launched a solo project called 'The Soviet Union' with the intention of releasing material I'd written and performed myself.

In the spirit of previous releases; 'Emptyhead' and 'Vosferbank'; The Soviet Union returns with the characteristically cinematic 'Ikronoklast'

Sonically this is unmistakably 'The Soviet Union', a bouncing, driving techno-disco workout, replete with chunky italo basslines, syncopated breakbeats, and distant voices evoking cold-war.

Complete with 'Von Leen-Hammer's' chunky re-work 'Ikronoklast' will be released this summer on brand new Qubicle Records.

Our latest edit comes from our very own @haryshanthi and is a tribute to Vijaykanth, who passed away on 28th Dec 2023. The male vocalist is Mansoor Ali Khan and female vocalist is from Swarnalatha, a career spanning almost 22 years, she recorded over 10,000 songs in many Indian languages. 
 
Inspired from his 100th film “Captain Prabhakaran” that was released to much fanfare in 1991 and earned him the moniker “Captain” among Tamil Eelam all around the world. This nickname not only reflected his acting skills but his compassions towards introducing young artists from marginalised communities, philanthropic activities and most importantly his ability to stand up against atrocities committed by the British and Srilankan Govt. led by Rajpaksha. 
 
His Legacy encompasses major contributions to Tamil Nadu’s political and social landscape and his courage to utilise his privileged position to help those who were displaced as refugees in Tamil Nadu’s Mandapam Camp. 
 
Vijaykanth in his own words. “The Srilankan tamils are Orphan’s. The aerial bombings of Tamil area’s between 1983 - 2008 without any concern for civilian life is an act of no civilised state resorts too”.

This is a homage to a human in the world of Ego’s, who stood and raised his voice for all the Tamil’s around the world when India (home to largest Tamil population) abandoned them and the British “the creator of this misery” showed their hypocritical side by reserving the terms Liberation and Genocide only for white lives.

SINCHI EDITS 25 - Swarnalatha - Captain Vijaykanth (Shanthi Edit)

Our latest addition to the Edit Series comes from @RadialGaze, a Berlin-based electronic artist known for blending musical genres and cultural elements from around the world. His sonic explorations embrace a unique mix of musical geography and time shifts, crafting mesmerizing, danceable sounds through non-trivial synthesis and new media techniques. 

In our previous installment, Radial Gaze reworked Maria Rita's epic Brazilian track Cântico Brasileiro nº 3 (Kamaiurá). This time, he revisits another classic—Bailando by Astrud—bringing his signature approach to pay tribute to the Spanish pop-rock duo from Barcelona. Formed in the late 1990s by Manolo Martínez and Genís Segarra (also of the electronic band Hidrogenesse), Astrud gained both critical and commercial success within Spain’s indie music scene.

Our summer 2025 addition to the Edit Series comes from @arashandquasar

In his own words, The song “Otdavali Molodu” (“They Gave the Young Bride Away”) is one of the first and most striking hits by the Soviet VIA (Vocal-Instrumental Ensemble) “Ariel,” arranged by Valery Yarushin based on a traditional Russian folk tune. The foundation of the piece is a traditional folk melody, but Yarushin infused it with rock intonations, which gave the ensemble its distinctive and recognizable style. Thanks to this song, Yarushin earned the respect of rock musicians, folk enthusiasts, and even academic audiences.

Why is the song important?

It’s a perfect example of the synthesis between folk motifs and modern musical forms: folklore + rock, an unconventional genre for a VIA. The song captures the spirit of its time, the 1970s, the heyday of Soviet folk rock and a period of musical boldness.

Thanks to this track, “Ariel” transcended the borders of Chelyabinsk and even the USSR, becoming recognized both across Eastern Europe and within the Soviet Union.

“Otdavali Molodu” is not just a hit by “Ariel” — it’s a symbol of an entire era: the beginning of the ensemble’s musical evolution, a successful example of folk-rock fusion, and a song that truly influenced listeners and the development of the Soviet music scene.

SINCHI EDITS 27 - Arash & Quasar - Otdavali Molodu (Ariel Edit)

We are back again with another edit from @jabba-2-3 who has been deejaying for over three decades. Holding the residencies at the "moon" indie raves and the Rennes "made.festival". He has chosen to edit the cult classic  from Coldcut feat Yazz and the plastic population "Doctorin' the house"  from 1988 that we could not resist.  

Why is the song important? Coldcut is a British electronic music duo formed by Matt Black and Jonathan More. Pioneers of sample-based music and remix culture in the UK. Coldcut were among the first producers to treat sampling as an art form. They didn’t just loop beats—they layered samples from TV, movies, spoken word, and other records to build complex sonic collages. Founders of Ninja Tune, an influential independent record label that has shaped not only UK underground scene but an entire generation and beyond. 

At a time when house music was still largely underground and centered in Chicago, Doctorin' the House was one of the first UK tracks to fuse house rhythms with British pop and hip-hop sensibilities.

It helped popularize house music in the UK and Europe, setting the stage for the Second Summer of Love (1988-89) and the UK rave scene. 

Doctorin' the House showcased how sampling could be playful, political, and danceable, all at once.

In his own words...
I chose to edit this 1988 track because it was one of the first tracks (which I found so bizarre at the time) that introduced me to house music and later acid house. And I love this sample-driven style.

We're back with a fantastic edit from @user-84053657 that should keep the summer toes moving. 

"Ah Ya Albi" is a song originally performed by Egyptian singer Hakim. The song, which translates to "Oh My Heart", is a popular Arabic song known for its energetic and emotional style. This song is the best manifestation of the period when Arabic folk (known as shaabi) expressing itself through contemporary sounds. 

Hakim, often called "The Lion of Shaabi," played a key role in popularizing this genre globally, infusing it with contemporary beats while keeping its roots in Egyptian street culture. "Ah Ya Albi" stands out for its catchy melody, powerful vocals, and the raw, heartfelt expression typical of shaabi music.

In her own words....

I chose this track because I have always been captivated by the vibrant and mystical sounds of Middle Eastern music. As a DJ, I often perform at parties dedicated to Middle Eastern electronic rhythms, one of which is held in Russia, in Orenburg, called Chastota 528. This track beautifully embodies the rich colors and soulful melodies of the Egypt. When I first heard it, I was instantly inspired and felt a deep desire to transform it into an electronic version that would capture its essence and bring its magic to life on the dance floor.

@NightNoiseMusic returns with a new release from @TheSovietUnion aka Richard Baldwin. Baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. A fine DJ, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, Richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. 

This release sees 'The Soviet Union' drawing on all their influences to craft a rugged slice of electronica. 'Emptyhead' is the track and it features additional remixes from Mind Fair, Dance Station and Ondata plus a dub mix from 'The Soviet Union' .

@AndrewClaristidge teams up once again with the mysterious @Workerpoor for a new EP on the eclectic @NightNoiseMusic label. The release was written between their studios in la Bretagne, Paris and Berlin, and comes backed with remixes from David Carretta, Cristiano Roberto, The Soviet Union and Tales of Voodoo.

Claristidge was formerly part of Acid Washed and has toured the world with his multi-faceted sounds that veers from pop to wave to techno. Workerpoor, meanwhile, has been at the heart of the dark electro scene on labels like Zone with artists like Arnaud Rebotini, The Hacker and Gesaffelstein. Their latest EP makes use of analog synths, drum machines and field recordings from the lake of Callac de Bretagne, so brims with life.

The second track on the release is ‘Slow Uppercut’, a slow, ambient, robotic piece redolent of Boards Of Canada that will sink you into a cosmic abyss.

Synth disco don @TheSovietUnion takes it up a notch and serves up an intergalactic workout of pixel thin synths and punk-funk drums that are fantastically visceral and direct.

We plump to showcase the digital only Dub version; it's electro drums and scattered French vox set the tone immediately. Progetto Tribale was born in 1992 under the mentorship of Giancarlino and executed by a team that included Pietro Micioni, Paolo Micioni, D.RaD (Stefano Facchielli) and Giancarlino himself. The project was based on a deep combination of african rhythms and soul music that have later influenced much of the music to come and was acclaimed by the press and dj’s all over the world as a genre bender.

The track ‘Behavior’ immediately reached a great success in clubs, as reported by the European House charts of the time. The project continued for two more productions with UMM, to then change label and go on with D: Vision, until 1996, year of publication of the last production, ‘Volume 6’. Today, 24 years later, ‘Volume 7’ was finally born under the partnership of Donato Dozzy, Pietro and Paolo Micioni and released by Danza Tribale.

@Idlefon is Hesam Ohadi, a computer musician and sound artist based in Tehran, Iran. His music is mainly associated with the broad spectrum of IDM, Ambient, and Glitch styles. Idlefon tends to make music which is relevant and in harmony with the urban life in his hometown of Tehran. He is also one of the co-founders and runners of the experimental art label BITROT. His first appearance as Idlefon is for his debut LP “Intensive Collectivity Known As City” released on the American label Tympanik Audio. He released his EP “Submarine” on the same label in 2015. Idlefon finished working on his second LP “Coldstream” in 2017.

In the words of the artist...

‘During sessions for my upcoming track 'Vosferbank'(On Sinchi). I was playing around with basslines and found myself playing the familiar sequence. Then decided to sample the track itself. Using that atmospheric FM donk sound that later became so ubiquitous in Drum & Bass and Garage, I decided to build a new mix around it. I sourced the Kirk samples from the original Star Trek film, replicated the strings and put it altogether in one afternoon. I can actually remember first hearing 'We are the Creator' on Colin Faver's Abstrakt Dance show on Kiss FM back in 1993. Hosting alongside Colin Dale, Faver's show was a window in that period's bold experimentation, with all sorts of techno, breakbeat hardcore, jungle, techno, and trance being played in the same evening. Alex Hazzard and Jack Smooth's track in particular always stuck with me because of their use of space, in those interludes between the frenetic syncopated rhythms that were beginning to morph into the emerging darker jungle sound. In fact, Alex Reece was the engineer on this one, and he would later stamp his own trademark as D&B, that had its first wave of mainstream popularity in the mid-90s. I always really enjoy remixing other artists and this 27 year old classic is a rare treat that deserves another look'.

Sinchi returns with a 3rd instalment of their acclaimed ‘Altered States’ compilation. Once again, raising funds for their own Sinchi Foundation and the work they do in supporting indigenous communities worldwide.

Again this is a truly international affair featuring artists across 4 continents. Representing South America, Altair & Sagan (Argentina), in North America, Mr. Tea (US) and Loui Martz (Mexico). In Europe, Lithuania’s Dannie Fade and British artist The Soviet Union, then crossing in to Western Asia, Syrian duo Boschoco… who’s hit Semsem (released on Sinchi this year), is remixed from the label themselves.

The label has become a symbol of originality and defined by a willingness to experiment with different genres and unknown artists. In the labels own words, 'we hear so much music that is churned out by ‘big name’ artists, which although usually beautiful produced, doesn’t do anything for us. Of course, high quality production is important but the ethos of the label is geared towards music which dares to be different, not judging demo’s from an artist’s reputation and most importantly is it unique enough to stand the test of time’.

Sinchi Collective is a multifaceted music platform. Including a label, event promoter, mix/edit series and blog (which showcases our favourite soon to be released music). 

The label launched in January 2019 and has featured a combination of singles and compilation releases with artists such as Sascha Funke, Curses, TAPAN, Damon Jee, Biesmans, Khidja, Italo Brutalo, Shubostar, Anatolian Weapons, and Tolouse Low Trax, to name a few and its objective is to promote positive social change and raise funds for our Sinchi Foundation, which supports Indigenous forest guardians in the Brazilian Amazon.
