A new collection of work titled 'Sodium Light' from myself has just been released on Lee Norris's excellent NeoTantra label. The work was inspired by a series of night walks my daughter and I took towards the back end of 2019; pre all the states we find ourselves in at the moment. It's an impressionistic work of night-time cityscapes. Mastered by Fraser McGowan.

Another Way (Shimmering Moods Records)

A sonic epilogue to Fionnlagh’s debut album, 'What Came After' builds on the dystopian, cinematic style set out in predecessor, 'What Came Before', with help from some of ambient’s most talented atmosphere specialists. A mix of reinterpretations and original material, the album sees an expansion of earlier themes, often with the contributing artists’ musical trademarks adding new emotive colours.

Like its predecessor, What Came After is not for the faint of hearted, yet it goes beyond the mere scare tactics of typical dark ambient, by leaning into the cinematic imaginations of the likes of Zimmer, Goransson and Jóhannsson. The album further benefits from the experience of some of ambient’s top names, and provides a diverse yet coherent sonic experience.

Over the last few years, Rostami has been playing with new ideas using field recordings, improvised piano, and tape processing. Already having made a few records experimenting with these ideas, "Siren" sets itself apart as a concentrated approach to illustrate abstract environments and landscapes through sound. On songs like "Cold Stream" and "The Recent Past" you will hear literal field recordings of nature mixed with composed musical emulations of environments, whether it be a representation of running water or the quiet nostalgia of suburban life. Songs like "Landscape" and "Today and Tomorrow" take field recordings of field recording records played in Rostami's studio space along with multiple recordings of the same piano performance. The piano is recorded with a field recorder, as midi and as a D/I recording and woven together, in and out, blending the soundscapes of field recordings and studio recordings into an undefined grey area.

One of the themes of this album is, I would say, dawn, new beginnings, taking the first steps on a new journey and so on, and many of the sounds used on it were recorded early in the morning. Several feature water, be it rain or a gently burbling forest stream. The recorded sounds were then processed in various ways to create soundscapes which hopefully have something of the life and organic feel of nature in them. A commentator online once described my Snufmumriko music as ”soundscape cloth woven from field recordings” or something along those lines, and i think that’s an apt description. There’s also an almost spiritual dimension to these tracks, and I was often in a very introspective mood as I created them.
