Few names carry the weight and innovation of Receptor, a producer long regarded as one of Drum & Bass’s most forward-thinking figures since his debut in 2008. As one of the founding members of Evolution Chamber, his influence has been cemented through ground-breaking solo works and collaborations that consistently raise the bar. Among those partnerships, his creative synergy with Engage has stood out for its intensity and precision, yielding tracks like Bio, Wi-Fi Waves, and Gothic. Now, a decade later, the pair return to the fold with their latest creation - “Surgeon.”

From its opening, Surgeon sets an unsettling tone with eerie pads and delicate hats, laying the groundwork for a sense of tension and intrigue. The track quickly develops with a phone-dial motif and thudding bass kicks, before dropping into an eruption of sharp snares and gritty, protruding bass stabs that cut through the mix with precision. Razor-edged FX and meticulous detail carry the momentum forward, making each bar bristle with energy.

Just when the pressure becomes overwhelming, the breakdown offers a brief reprieve before the track surges forward again into a second drop, this time with an even sharper bite. Clear-cut drums, rigorous low-end weight, and driving rhythms give Surgeon a raw and uncompromising edge, all while keeping an underlying sense of unpredictability that keeps the energy alive until the very end.

What makes this release stand out is how both Receptor and Engage take centre stage, and effortlessly combine their unique approaches: Receptor’s reputation for forward-thinking production and Engage’s trademark grit and precision. Skulking through the shadows underneath the city streets was a horrendous beast, an amalgamation of once human flesh that had been absorbed from those discarded and forgotten on the streets above. In time, the last vestiges of these individuals vengeful will had sought each other out, infusing in their rotten remains a revenant power that sought revenge on those by whom they had been slain. With each corpse that their combined form came across the monster grew in might, and with each killer that they slew in vengeance they found within themselves a spark of arcane power restored to their being.

It was thus that they now held in thrall before their combined visage one who had slain many of their ilk, a prolific killer in his own right now paralysed in their grasp. From within their many-toothed maw shone a pale red light, hypnotic and enwrapturing for any to whom it shone. The light’s allure drew them in, unsuspecting, before the beast’s horrific embrace consumed them in a furious feast vengeful rage. Thus it was known that for all those who drew blood on the streets of the city above, the DEADLIGHT lurking below was to be their destined end.

DROPSET returns to EATBRAIN with his debut EP, DEADLIGHTS, and unveils four hypnotically horrifying tracks for the ears of the EATBRAIN horde.

Amidst the flames of the palace that burned around him, the ronin longed for his memories of years past, in which the rule of his prior sovereign had been wise, benevolent, & just. A time before the ascension of the ruler's cousin following the chaotic succession of his death, a time in which the very thought of the course the ronin now pursued would have seemed surreptitious at best. Despite his own misgivings, the ronin had chosen to favor the honor of his familial oath in continued service to this new shogun. In time, he had hoped, the reality of ruling the grand realm left by his predecessor would help stir the new shogun from his avarice & cruelty.

Now, he stood solemn amidst the chaos of coup & revolution, reviling in the knowledge that time had not been his ally. Now wielding his blade in an oath all his own, he had taken up arms against those still loyal to his former master & broken his oath, rendering himself an outcast in the courts of all lords across the land. Yet he carried on, for on this path of flame and rebellion there burned one faint glimmer of hope for redemption. It would be he who would slay his former master and restore tranquility to the land once more. What judgment may fall upon his own shoulders past that point mattered not. Even if his own head should roll for the breaking of his oath, the lives of countless more would be spared from the tyrant for whom the palace now burned.

SCREAMARTS returns to EATBRAIN with UNRUHE featuring Scout 22, the latest work from the ronin producer who once more flourishes his masterful sonic artistry before the ears of the label’s faithful horde.
