Esta constelação localizada a sul de Libra e a leste de Centauro é uma constelação pequena, apresentando algumas estrelas de magnitude 2. Está quase unida a Centauro, como se este acariciasse a sua mascote, o lobo. Os antigos gregos e romanos chamavam Therion a este grupo de estrelas, representação de um animal selvagem indeterminado, que usualmente era designado como a besta ou a fera.

A associação com um lobo surge posteriormente, nos finais da idade média.

Segundo a lenda mais célebre, com origem na mitologia grega, o lobo representa um animal caçado pelo Centauro, que se prepara para oferecê-lo aos deuses no Altar (constelação próxima que representa um altar sacrificial).
