'Warrior' is the new single by Equal Echo, a soulful hymn to positive thought, led by warm electronic sounds and humanised rhythms. Equal Echo emerged unexpectedly from a moment of collaboration between south London's Alexa Harley and Hector Plimmer. Through that moment of co-writing both artists discovered a natural chemistry, alignment in their ideas and expression. One session turned into a weekly engagement and that forged debut EP 'Dynamite', released in May 2019.

The unique circumstances of the global pandemic brought about for them, as with many people, a moment of retrospect. So while they were prevented from meeting to write new music, a search through their extensive catalogue of ideas was productive. 

"‘Warrior’ is one of the first pieces we worked together on as Equal Echo and even though we’ve always really loved it, somehow it got lost in our archive and didn’t make it onto our first EP ‘Dynamite’. During the first couple weeks of the UK lockdown, we were going through our unreleased tracks and this song suddenly jumped out at us like it was brand new and put such a smile on our faces. We wanted to share this feeling and hope it makes others smile too. Right now feels like the perfect time to release this track, as it’s all about focusing on the positive and overcoming negative thoughts, which is something I think we’re all trying to do in this current bizarre world we’ve found ourselves in! Excited this track is finally seeing the light of day."

Alexa Harley is a singer-songwriter-musician who, as well as collaborating with Hector, has worked with Mt. Wolf, Tom Misch, Hybrid Minds and Nonames (Foreign Beggars). Hector Plimmer is a multi-faceted producer, composer and DJ. Influenced by beat-makers like Flying Lotus and Theo Parrish, with the subtleties of the classic Metalheadz era drum and bass, his recent album 'Next To Nothing' featured Ego Ella May, Emma-Jean Thackray, Andrew Ashong and Pie Eye Collective. The album was covered by Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Crack Magazine, Hyponik, The Vinyl Factory, Stamp The Wax and i-D, reached BBC 6 Music’s playlist and was also supported on radio by Jamz Supernova, Benji B, Moses Boyd and Worldwide FM.

Equal Echo - Warrior instrumental

This track is a blend of conceptualized lyrics with a laid-back electronic, downtempo soundscape which conveys a note of solace to the audience, insisting them to 'Wake up from that nightmare' and not wither with time in procrastination or brooding, especially serving as a testimonial to the scenario of 2020, playing a real number on us, as a civilization.

'Drift' explores a world of hidden messages in a song, over a hook-line melody, composed in Morse Code for the word 'WASTED' (.--.-...-.-..), which is incorporated as a sonic element in the track. Lyrically, this track delves into the theory of an existential crisis as a result of having to face the fatal realities engulfing our society at the moment.

The inception point of this collaborative project with Stain began with him sharing the track idea with a sleek and catchy beat over an electronic track. Thereafter, Namrata progressively added the lyrics, melody, arrangement and the Morse coded-hook idea culminating to a scratch of the first take of 'Drift' as a track.

We are very pleased to premiere "Handwash", the debut single of international collaborative and experimental jazz project Solapur Road, forthcoming on XVI Records. 

The brainchild of composers / saxophonists ​Alejandro Van Zandt Escoba​r (also of XVI Records signees ​Lucked In​, whose debut release “Nuttin’ Cold” received incredible support from ​Gilles Peterson, Lauren Laverne and OkayAfrica​) & ​Divya Farias​, “​Handwash” and b-side “Machine​” showcase the pair’s avant garde background as angular horn harmonies meet fluid structures, soaring vocals and subterranean sub-bass.  
 
Capturing a moment in time, bottling a lightning-strike moment of unbridled creativity, these recordings evoke a deep and unsettling atmosphere, soundtracking the re-examination of antiquated systems currently being experienced across the world.  Delivering their first offering since 2016’s track ‘​Continental Lobby’ (taken from the​ ‘XVI Records Vol III: Islands Unknown’ LP), the single was recorded in 2017  from a series of jams in Brooklyn and Oakland. Explaining their processes, Divya and Alejandro said: 
 
 ​“Living across the world from each other has pushed us out of our comfort zone in music making, as we both come from live improvisation backgrounds. On the rare chance that we’re in the same place we try to record a bunch of improvised sessions with very loose structures and melodic ideas underpinning them, which we then proceed to cut up and build into a song. The process is very slow, with versions getting lost in web transfers and hard drives over months or even years, but we also find this gives the tracks time to mature.” 
 
“On Handwash and Machine we worked with our friends ​Pam Soffer (vocals) and​ Phil McNeal ​(drums) who brought an organic energy to our studio cut-ups. We see Solapur Road as a production duo with our saxophone recordings as our raw material but aside from that, we don’t exactly know where the road leads.”

It's always great to find a Soundcloud account that continually shares and re-posts top notch content time after time. And that's exactly what you'll find if you head over @jeanbart59, the page of Davebryckaert / Deep Corsairse.

We first noticed that Dave was a fan of the auld 2Sox stuff, so gave him a wee follow and his shares have put us on to some lovely stuff over the years. A constant stream of delightful sounds being shared as Dave clearly has his ears on the pulse, and we noticed that he's dropped a couple of his own mixes into mix too.

Deep, dreamy and soulful; but dance floor friendly - Dave knows how to select records!

The man himself gave us some words when submitting the mix that we ought to share: "Electronic music is part of my life, can't do without, this is a story of love, I consider music as a universal language, a language that everyone can understand, because it speaks directly to your heart, your soul, it goes far beyond culture, religion, people position in society, it makes everyone connected. This mix is for me what is electronic music, this is a deep introspection into my soul."

He also tells us that he's got an album in the works for later this year or next. Magic.
